Do these numbers make sense to you? Explain your answer.

At first, it did not make sense, since we humans do not look like any of
those animals listed, except for the chimpanzee. As I did my research, I
understood how some genosomes of these animals are present in us. These
numbers represent how similar we are to the animals listed in terms of their
genes and characteristics. At some point, I found out that we come from one
ancestry, in which we share common genetic elements that have evolved through
time.

1. Why do you think we are more closely related to a plant than bacteria?
Both humans and plants are eukaryotes, having large nuclei that house
many chromosomes inside of large cells. Bacteria are prokaryotes that live in the
cytoplasm of tiny cells and have a single circular strand of DNA along with
episomes. Since eukaryotes share so many characteristics, it is clear that they
have only undergone one evolutionary event. Therefore, we have a closer
ancestry with all other eukaryotes than with any prokaryote.

Moreover, EYA genes were also seen present in humans and in plants.
Scientists are able to link all of them to a single old gene because of how similar
their DNA sequences are. These genes are regarded as belonging to the same
family as they are all descended from a single ancestor.

2. Are you surprised at how much DNA we have in common with chimps and
zebrafish? Elaborate your answer.
Yes, as per the chimpanzees, it is the closest surviving relative of humans,
diverging into distinct evolutionary lineages yet sharing an ancestor about 6–8
million years ago. Since chimpanzee and human DNA are 98.7% similar, there is
a strong evolutionary connection between the two species. Comparable skeletal
characteristics, complex social behaviors, opposable thumbs, advanced cognitive
capacities, and problem-solving abilities are shared by both species.

On the other hand, zebrafish are often used as model organisms in

scientific studies because of their biological and genetic similarities. Both species
have conserved genes and pathways that are comparable in their functions in
development and fundamental biological processes, despite their divergent
evolutionary histories. Researchers can examine the roles and interactions of
orthologous genes in illnesses by examining the fully sequenced genome of
zebrafish. They are a great model to research the development, genetics, and
disease processes of vertebrates because of their transparent embryos and
quick development.
