CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Rationale

One of the common observed learning process is how other students

outscore other student of equal intelligence. Accordingly, academic performance

of the students had been the most important factor used to evaluate student

achievement and the quality of education school provides. Study habits and

motivation plays an important role in the academic achievement of students.

Study habits is defined as the behavior or method of studying and skill.

Education is one of the best function in achieving good quality of life

(Barcenas & Bibon 2020). Education is growing in all developing countries and

develops a country’s economy and society. In addition, it contributes to the

formation of identity and teaches learning skills that can be achieve through

focus and studying. Honor students have different motivation, pattern or routine

on how they study. Also, they have more learning skills and styles than those

with low academic performance.

In Philippines, it was confirmed that sex, socio-economic status,

education level and preferred modality of learning delivery are considered

determinants for the varying level of study habits of Filipino secondary students

(Salva 2022). Study habits and motivation become prominent since many are

wondering what can be their inspirations and things should do to have more

knowledge. Moreover, it enables the students to better understand and thrive in

challenging academic environment with high expectations supported by teachers

and resources.

However, students with natural motivation driven by a genuine interest in

learning can also be a key factor behind their exceptional academic success.

Additionally, students with high motivation have more skills since they regularly

work harder and enjoys their abilities to develop more learnings.

In connection, the researcher seeks to determine and assess the different

study habits and the level of motivation of honor students in San Roque National

High School. It is significant to conduct this study because it will help students

who have lower academic performance and students who wanted to improve

themselves in school to characterize their behavior and to know the different

styles in learning used by honor students.

Literature Background

Study habits is a habitual student routine with motivation to accomplish

academic task. Setting measurable goals and value in learning can impact the

quality of study and level of motivation. Academic goals can trigger a student to

be committed in studies and institutes route for learning. It creates direction to

which they can put all their efforts lead to the increase of academic performance.

Learning performance is influenced by the of ability to complete a goal and level

of self- efficacy.

The study of (Salva R.A. 2022) determined that working on the academic

requirements topped the other four domains of study habits, like managing time

and school related stressors, preparing for and taking the test, setting

measurable goals, and developing metacognitive awareness. Schools will be

delighted to know that their students are trying to manifest a good sense of

responsibility in working on their requirements. Study habits is important even in

the early stages of a student’s life because the learners could achieve more once
they find what type of study strategies fit them best. Other than study habits,

there are also some other factors that may influence the academic performance

of a student, may it be their physical environment, or the people—family, peers,

educational institution, faculty, and much more, could also lead these scholars to

their desired career path. (Castillo 2023).

Academic performance is the primary indicator of a quality learning

experience in every school setting, particularly in higher institutions (Magulod,

2019). Local researchers have ascertained that a positive relationship between

study habits and academic performance exists, more so, having consistent study

habits is a prerequisite to good academic performance (Salcedo-Relucio, 2019).

Similarly, Siahi and Maiyo (2015) studied study habits and academic

achievement of students also found out that a positive relationship of 0.66

between study habits and academic achievement. The results implied that the

study habits need a significant attention if we are to improve performance.

Furthermore, Chilca (2017) studied on the study habits and academic

performance among university students in Peru concluded that study habits do

influence academic performance.

There is indeed a significant relation between how a person studies, and

how it affects the outcome of their performance. There are many different

strategies in learning considered as study habits. According to (Mallillin and

Laurel 2020), note taking during the learning process are done by the students

for better mastery of the lesson and their learning enhancement toward their

study habit and learning style as a motivational factor among the students.
(Cerna, reyes and pavliushc 2015) stated that note taking had been investigated

in all studies related to study habits. Developing a time to study would enhance

study habits and learning styles, there are students who can study early others

want to study late at night. Time planning is necessary for the improve study of

the students especially during their learning process as a motivation to their

learning style and study habits (Fujii 2019). Further, the relationship between

time management and academic performance proved significant, means that

student need to be taught how to plan before doing things in many of their daily

(Razali et. al. 2018), this finding also revealed a significant relationship between

reading and concentration, students need more reading to increase their ability to

think and improve on their verbal skills. This study is also in line with (Pobi 2016).

Motivation helps student to make strong organizational skills, active, inspired,

invent different learning strategies and disciplined that contribute to effective

study habits.

Study and learning techniques of students at present must be in accordance to their

desire to learn and according to their motivation to their learning process. The aspects of
students’ motivation uniquely contribute to differences in students’ achievement. Also,
(Steinmayr 2019) demonstrated the relative importance of students’ ability self-concepts, their
task values, learning goals, and achievement motives for students’ grades in different academic
subjects above and beyond intelligence and prior achievement. They are motivated especially
when they have the desire for learning output, goals of the students in their learning process on
their cognitive mechanism in enhancing their knowledge of learning (Willis, & Schaie, 2018).
Moreover, learning styles can be improved when students are organized in their study habits.
They need to focus, manage their itinerary as to time of their studies aside from their extra-
curricular activities. Focus while studying can be an implication to their learning style and study
habit and as a motivation to their academic performance (Van Zyl, & Stander, 2019). The
Findings of (Steinmayr et. al.,2019) study broaden our knowledge on the role of students’
motivation for academic achievement. Students’ ability turned out to be the most important
motivational predictor of students’ grades and beyond differences in their intelligence and prior
grades. Therefore, there is strong evidence that believing in own competencies is advantageous
with respect to academic achievement.
