Brick Kilns in South Asia – Causing Devastating Problems

• Brick kilns across South Asia have a global warming impact equivalent to that of all passenger cars in the
United States, and air pollution from these kilns kills tens of thousands of people each year as a result
of respiratory and cardiovascular disease (Stanford Earth Institute)

• Brick Kilns in South Asia contribute 10% to the total air pollution in south Delhi, 11% in Patna, 30% in
Dhaka (Down to Earth. Org)

• LAHORE (PAKISTAN): AMNESTY ISSUES UNPRECEDENTED 'URGENT ACTION' CALL AFTER SMOG
ENVELOPES CITY OF 11 MILLION (NEWSWEEK)

• Child labour force drives brick kilns in Bhaktapur - The report said the children working at brick
kilns often became the victims of child marriage, defamation and sexual violence, among other social
problems. Accidental death of children is also quite common at brick kilns, as per the report. (The
Himalayan Times: Nepal)

• ‘About 35% women workers are harassed, tortured at brick kiln’ (The Express Tribune, Pakistan)

• The 120,000 brick kilns scattered across South Asia release huge amounts of greenhouse gases and black
carbon into the atmosphere. Commonly known as soot, black carbon is the second biggest global
warming pollutant after carbon dioxide; it affects health and visibility and accelerates the melting of
Himalayan snow and ice. (ICIMOD)

IMPACT OF TRADITIONAL BRICK KILNS ON AIR QUALITY
– ILO Report (Brick by Brick, 2017)

1. The brick sector is the third-largest industrial coal consumer in India, using 24
million tons of coal, thereby emitting 78 million tons of CO2 annually.

2. The industrial sector is one of the largest contributors to black carbon emissions
in South Asia, accounting for approximately 23 per cent of all black carbon
emissions in the region. In India, the industrial sector accounts for approximately
15 per cent of all black carbon emissions, with approximately two-thirds of those
emissions (9 percent) attributable to brick kilns.

3. The burning of coal (the primary fuel) in the brick industry produces roughly
one-third of the total carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of the global airline industry
which produced about 550 million tons of CO2.

Despite all these problems, Governments Cannot Stop!
Because; Urban Construction is Booming!

Demand for bricks in South Asia is fueled by the construction of

housing, office buildings, car parks, and transport infrastructures
such as roads and highways for the rapidly growing urban centres.

A 2011 study predicts that South Asia will have the fastest and most
sustained urban growth in the coming decades with the urban
population in the region expected to double in the next forty years,
from less than 600 million in 2010 to over 1.4 billion in 2050.

In India, the construction industry is regarded as one of the most

important sectors in the economy as it provides about 35 million
jobs and contributes 8 per cent of the country’s GDP. The demand
for infrastructure and services will continue to grow as India’s towns
and cities are projected to swell by an additional 404 million people
by 2050.

Similarly in Nepal, which is primarily a rural country, there is a 7

percent increase in the urban population every year, and after the
destruction caused by the 2015 earthquakes, this demand for
bricks is projected to quadruple.

Good Bricks System increases productivity significantly

Good Bricks System: Manufactured by Soil Stabilizer and Brick Making Machine
Air Move to Move to
Produce Stack Bake Cure
drying Kiln Storage
1 day 1 day 7 days 1 day 14 days 1 day 3 day

Good Bricks System hardens and cures bricks using Soil Stabilizers instead of
baking bricks in Kilns, reducing 80% of production time (28 days 5 days )

Good Bricks System can be manufactured during rainy season and night time,
since all process can be done indoors, under the same roof

Initial Investment in Good Bricks System is 1/5 of building a new kiln

Hence, Productivity increase is expected at 10X compared to existing Fired Brick

Traditional Brick Kiln System Good Brick System

 Average yearly production = 10 – 20 million per

machine (8 to 16 Hours of Production)
 Cost of production for 1 brick = Appr. Rs. 9
 = Net Profit from 1 brick = Rs. 6 
 10 ~ 20 million * Rs. 6 = Rs. 60 ~ 120 million/ Yr.
 Average HR Required = Less than 20 people
• Average yearly production = 7 million  No hassle on approval from Nepal Government
• Average Hire of HR = 300 People  No Environmental issues, No Labor Issues
• Cost of production for 1 brick = App. Rs. 7  No Coal supply issues
• = Net Profit for 1 brick Rs. 8   Easily Expandable to multiple machines  Above #
7 million * Rs. 8= Rs. 56 million/ Yr. Max. is for ‘1’ machine only
