Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

CO1 :: study the concept of wave motion.

CO2 :: describe laws of reflection and refraction of light.

CO3 :: define the phenomenon related to electrostatics.

CO4 :: explain the terms and laws related to electricity and magnetism.

CO5 :: discuss laser concepts in engineering applications.

CO6 :: employ laws of physics in our daily life.

Unit I
Wave Motion and Its Applications : Wave motion, transverse and longitudinal wave motion with
examples, sound and light waves, relationship among wave velocity, frequency and wavelength and
its application, Free, forced and resonant vibrations with examples, Acoustics of buildings –
reverberation, reverberation time, echo, noise, coefficient of absorption of sound, methods to control
reverberation time and their applications, Ultrasonics – Introduction and their engineering and
medical applications.
Unit II
Optics : Laws of reflection and refraction, refractive index, lens for thin lenses, power of lens,
magnification, Simple and compound microscope, astronomical telescope in normal adjustment,
magnifying power, uses of microscope and telescope, Total internal reflection and its applications,
Critical angle and conditions for total internal reflection, Applications of Total Internal Reflection in
optical fiber
Unit III
Electrostatics : Capacitance, types of capacitors, capacitance of parallel plate capacitor, series and
parallel combination of capacitors, Dielectric and its effect on capacitance and dielectric break down,
Coulombs law, unit of charge, Electric field, Electric lines of force and their properties, Electric flux,
Electric potential and potential difference
Unit IV
Current Electricity : Electric Current and its Unit, Direct and alternating current, Resistance and its
Units, Specific Resistance, Conductance, Specific Conductance, Series and Parallel combination of
Resistances, Factors affecting Resistance, Colour coding of carbon Resistances, Ohm’s law and its
verification, superconductivity, Kirchhoff’s laws, Wheatstone bridge and its applications (slide wire
bridge only), Heating effect of current, Electric power, Electric energy and its units (related numerical
problems), Advantages of Electric Energy over other forms of energy
Unit V
Electromagnetism : Magnetic field and its units, magnetic intensity, magnetic lines of force,
magnetic flux and their units, Lenz’s law and its uses like dynamo, Right hand and left hand rules,
Introduction to magnetism, Types of magnetic materials, Dia, para and ferromagnetic materials with
their properties, Concept of electromagnetic induction, Faraday’s Laws, Moving coil galvanometer its
principle, construction and working, Conversion of a galvanometer into ammeter and voltmeter
Unit VI
Modern Physics : Concept of energy levels, ionizations and excitation potentials, Spontaneous and
stimulated emission, Lasers and its characteristics, population inversion, Types of lasers, Helium-Neon
and ruby laser, their engineering and medical applications
