Solution
i. Firstly, create a table that looks like this
On the far left column, always put in initial moles, equilibrium moles and
concentration. At the top of the table put in each of the reactants and
products.
Include stoichiometric coefficients as well.

ii. Next, fill in all the known information given in the question.
We were given the moles of ethanoic acid and the moles of ethanol.

NB: The initial moles of the products is always 0 (unless stated otherwise). So we can also input that into the table.
iii. [Find the moles of ethanoic acid at equilibrium].We were given the information about the amount and concentration of NaOH that was used to neutralize the ethanoic
acid at equilibrium. So we can use that information to find the moles of ethanoic acid at equilibrium.

We can put that into the table.

iv. Work out the moles of other substances at equilibrium. Since we
know the [moles of ethanoic acid that remain/at equilibrium], we can
also calculate how much had reacted.

NB: The moles of CH 3 COOC 2 H 5 and H 2 O at equilibrium ¿the

moles of ethanoic acid that reacted. This is due to the 1:1 ratio of the stoichiometric coefficients.
v. Finding the equilibrium moles of ethanol;

The moles of ethanoic acid reacted will be the same

as the moles of the ethanol reacted due to the 1 :1
ratio. So the equilibrium moles of ethanol will be
0.160−0.14125=0.01875 mol

vi. Usually, we would now calculate concentration. But the Kc equation would be

So, the volumes would cancel out since they would all be the same.
This means, we can just use moles to work out Kc.

Workout the units for the K c the reaction; PCl3 ( g )+Cl 2(g ) ⇌ PCl5( g)
Solution:
[PCl ¿¿ 5]
K c units= ¿
[ PCl¿¿ 3][Cl ¿¿ 2]¿ ¿
The unit for concentration is mol dm−3. We can use this to calculates the
units for K c
−3
(mol dm )
K c units=
(mol dm−3)( mol dm−3)
Which can also be written as
−1 3
K c units=mol dm

Note: It is possible for there to be no units for a K c value. This happens if all of the concentration units cancel out.
Example 3:
Calculating Equilibrium Moles using K c . The following equilibrium is established: H 2 ( g) + I 2(g) ⇌ 2 HI (g ).To reach this equilibrium 0.300 mol H 2of was mixed with
0.300 mol of I 2. The K c of this equilibrium is 0.330. Calculate the equilibrium moles of each substance. 6 marks

Solution
Step 1: Create a table of the initial and equilibrium moles H2 I2 2 HI
Initial moles 0.300 0.300 0
Equilibrium moles 0.300−x 0.300−x 2x

Step 2: Calculate the value of x

Step 3: Calculate the equilibrium moles of each substance
