L3 Diploma – Music Performance & Production

Project – Developing a Performance

Rationale

When we see musicians performing live at the top of their game we are witnessing the result of hours of
hard work in research, development of repertoire, and rehearsal, not to mention technical preparation.

As musicians ourselves we can apply common skills and processes to our own musical development to
ensure that our performances are successful too.

For this project you are tasked with developing a band to deliver a performance of 3 songs to an audience
in the college theatre on 9th November 2023. You have to choose the songs, plan the rehearsals, reflect on
your progress and deliver the performance.

A key component of the project is the way in which, and to what extent, you evaluate your progress
throughout. It is essential that you document the rehearsal process thoroughly and show that you set
realistic and achievable objectives.

At the end of the project you will evaluate the performance in the contexts of how you and your group did, as
well as how successfully you believe the performance to be in artistic terms.

Hand out date: Final Deadline: Number of weeks:

25th September 2023 Performance 9th November 2023 7 weeks (inc. half term break)
Final deadline 13th November 2023 5 weeks rehearsal

Developing a Music Performance 1

Task 1: Preparation – planning, development, rehearsal and reflection
Context/Research
Part 1: Band meeting

Have a band meeting.

Video record the meeting.

Discuss:
Repertoire - begin creating a ‘long list’ from which you can then choose songs to be worked on. You must
select and rehearse a minimum of 3 songs in a variety of styles in readiness for performance. Make sure
the songs you choose work well together as a set of songs.

Timescale - you will have 5 weeks maximum to prepare for the performance. Plan how you will use that
time and create a schedule (template provided).

Genre, style and image – you are required to create a varied set of songs, but will this be within a specific
genre? What image will be appropriate for the group? Do you need some stage design?

Practical Skills/Evaluation and Reflection

Part 2: Planning, rehearsal and reflection

1) Have a plan – create a rehearsal Action Plan using the planning template provided. This must be
screenshot and put on your website.

2) At the beginning of each session you must set objectives for your rehearsal.

Do this with a band discussion, documented on video. What are your individual goals for the day?
What do the band as a whole need to achieve?

Write up objectives on your whiteboard.

3) Follow the plan - Undertake your rehearsals according to your objectives.

4) Measure progress - Evaluate your rehearsal against these objectives.

At the end of the rehearsal video another reflective discussion with the whole band. Evaluate
progress together.

Practical Skills/Evaluation and Reflection

Part 3: Documentation

Upload all your documents – Minutes/notes from meetings, timescale and schedule etc. to your website.

Upload rehearsal videos to your website too, and annotate them with a summary of the content.

Use your website to effectively evaluate your progress and set objectives for each session. You must show
here how you are assessing your progress and acting accordingly to make the best progress from
rehearsal to rehearsal.
