Catholic Social Doctrines (CSD) is a vital aspect of Catholic theology that
addresses the moral and ethical implications of social and economic issues. This
lesson will explore the nature, scope, and key principles of CSD and how it has
evolved over time.

Seeing God’s Message in the teachings of the Church

“Christian revelation... promotes deeper understanding of the laws of social
living.”199 The Church receives from the Gospel the full revelation of the truth
about man. When she fulfills her mission of proclaiming the Gospel, she bears
witness to man, in the name of Christ, to his dignity and his vocation to the
communion of persons. She teaches him the demands of justice and peace in
conformity with divine wisdom. (1960, 359)

Integrating God’s Message in my life


 Why does the Catholic Church have her own social teaching?
 The Catholic Church has its own social teaching because it wants to
guide its followers on how to live in a just and loving way in society. The

Church believes that God created every person with dignity and worth,
and that we are all part of a larger community.
 The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us that the Church's social
teaching is based on the Gospel and the teachings of Jesus. In paragraph
2419, it says, "The Church has rejected the totalitarian and atheistic
ideologies associated in modem times with 'communism' or 'socialism.'"
This means that the Church wants to promote values that are in line with
the teachings of Jesus and to help people understand how to live in a way
that respects the dignity of every person.
 The Church's social teaching covers a wide range of topics, such as
human rights, the dignity of work, care for the poor and vulnerable, and
promoting peace and justice. It provides guidance on how to build a
society that is based on love, justice, and solidarity.
 So, the Catholic Church has its own social teaching to help its followers
understand how to live in a way that reflects the teachings of Jesus and
promotes a just and loving society.

 How did the Church’s social doctrine develop?


 The Church's social doctrine developed over time as a response to the
changing social and economic conditions in the world. It is based on the
teachings of Jesus Christ and the wisdom of the Church's leaders
throughout history.
 The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains that the Church's social
doctrine "is a development of the Church's teaching on the dignity of the
human person, the principles of justice and peace, and the moral and
ethical principles that should guide human behavior in society" (CCC
2422).
 The development of the Church's social doctrine can be traced back to the
early Christian community, where the followers of Jesus lived in
solidarity with one another and shared their possessions. As the Church
grew and encountered different cultures and societies, it adapted its
teachings to address the challenges and injustices of each era.
 In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Church's social doctrine became more
formalized and articulated in response to the industrial revolution, the rise
of capitalism, and the social inequalities that resulted from these changes.
Popes and bishops began to issue encyclicals and documents that
addressed social issues and provided guidance for Catholics on how to
live justly in society.
 For example, Pope Leo XIII's encyclical Rerum Novarum, published in
1891, addressed the rights and dignity of workers and called for just
wages and working conditions. This was followed by other important

documents such as Pope Pius XI's Quadragesimo Anno and Pope John
XXIII's Mater et Magistra, which further developed the Church's social
teachings.
 The Church's social doctrine continues to evolve and respond to the
challenges of our times. It is based on the timeless principles of justice,
love, and human dignity, and it provides guidance for Catholics on how
to live out their faith in the world and work towards a more just and
compassionate society.

 What is the foundation of the Catholic Social Responsibility?


 The foundation of Catholic social responsibility is rooted in the belief
that every person is created in the image of God and has inherent dignity
and worth. This belief comes from the teachings of Jesus Christ and is
central to the Catholic faith.
 The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that "The human
person, created in the image of God, is a being at once corporeal and
spiritual" (CCC 362). This means that each person is both a physical and
spiritual being, and this is what makes them special and valuable.
 Because of this belief, Catholics are called to treat others with love,
respect, and compassion. In paragraph 1929, the Catechism states,
"Social justice can be obtained only in respecting the transcendent dignity
of man." This means that in order to have a just society, we must
recognize and honor the dignity of every person.
 Catholic social responsibility is also based on the principle of the
common good, which means working for the well-being of all people and
promoting the overall welfare of society. In paragraph 1905, the
Catechism says, "The common good consists of three essential elements:
respect for and promotion of the fundamental rights of the person;
prosperity, or the development of the spiritual and temporal goods of
society; the peace and security of the group and of its members."
 So, the foundation of Catholic social responsibility is the belief in the
inherent dignity of every person, the call to love and respect others, and
the commitment to work for the common good of all.
