Architecture is the built realization of a particular concept, or idea. This idea can be about
construction, or the way people will use a building, or how the building fits into a physical, or a
social, landscape.
When referring to architecture; a concept is an idea, thought or notion that forms the
backbone and foundation of a design project and one that drives it forward.
It is the very first part of the design process to be developed and realized much like a seed is to
plant. And just like a plant seed it can come from a vast array of sources, and produce a huge
amount of variations and outcomes.
The Site – climate, orientation, views, access, context, history, site analysis
Design brief – client and building requirements, accommodation, and
construction budget
Building typology – Building type and use
But can also be generated in full or in part by building program, culture, society,
technology, emotion, and sense.
Conceptual architecture isn’t just another building you walk into and forget, instead, the imprint
on the human mind leaves one tongue-tied. A concept gives a soul to the building and turns them
into architecture.
Twine, a conceptual house visualized by designer Antony Gibbon is a spectacular example of
a twisting ribbon roof sitting within the rolling hills. Twine is inspired by a series of organic
forms giving rippling twists and curvature to the concrete.

Defining Architecture;
The term: Architecture
-originated from the Greek word “Architekton”
Archi-great tekton-builder
Architecture is the art and science of building
It is the conscious creation of utilitarian spaces with the deliberate use of material
Architecture should be technically efficient and aesthetically pleasing.
"Architecture is the scientific art of making structure express ideas. Architecture is the triumph
of human imagination over materials, methods, and men to put man into possession of his own
earth. Architecture is man's great sense of himself embodied in a world of his own making. It
may rise as high in quality only as its source because great art is great life." — Frank Lloyd
Wright, from the Architectural Forum, May 1930
Architecture can be defined as durability (firmitas), utility (utilitas) and beauty (venustas) at the
right time and at the right cost – Marcus Vitruvius Pollio (De architectura or On Architecture)
Architecture is the masterly, correct and the magnificent play of masses brought together in light.
– Le Corbusier
Architecture is a discipline, a profession and a state of mind. Architecture is a cultural index that
takes different forms in civilizations and political settings. – Anthony Antoniades (Poetics of
Architecture)
Design and Architectural Design

Design
Design can be seen as an iterative process where, at each iteration, there are inputs, there
is a design process and then there are outputs. At the end of each iteration, the outputs are
reviewed and then the process may have to begin again.

Architectural design provides a distinction between existence and living. The basic requirements
of structures include shelter and arrangement of space, both of which are utilitarian. The
additional feature provided by architectural design is that of aesthetics, the expression of a
building. All three items; shelter, arrangement and aesthetics must be seamlessly integrated in
order to achieve a successful architectural solution.
Architectural design is a component of the desire for order in the manner by which we choose to
control our living environment; providing space for desired activities and establishing a place
within the world itself. Two key aspects of human involvement are contained in the design
process. The first aspect relates to the architect, the second aspect relates to the user or
participant of the solution.
