Content Standard The learner demonstrates the understanding of the digestive system and its
interaction with the circulatory, respiratory, and excretory systems in providing the
body with nutrients for energy.
Performance The learners should be able to present an analysis of the data gathered on diseases
Standard resulting from nutrient deficiency.
Learning Competency The learners should be able to:
Explain ingestion, absorption, assimilation and excretion;
Label the digestive tract
Value the importance of having a healthy digestive system
I. Objectives
Identify the parts and function of the digestive system
Internalize the importance of each organs in processing the food
Trace the correct pathway of food inside the digestive system
II. Subject Matter
A. Topic Structures and Functions
Focus on the Digestive System
B. Concept Digestion of food is carried out by the organs and substances of the digestive
system. During digestion, food is broken down to smaller parts a fraction of which
is made up of nutrients. These nutrients are circulated to the different parts of the
body through the bloodstream and assimilated by cells.
The digestive system is made up of the gastrointestinal tract also called the GI
tract or digestive tract. The GI tract is a series of hollow organs joined in a long,
twisting tube from mouth to the anus. The hollow organs that make up the GI are
the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and anus. The
liver, pancreas and gallbladder are the solid organs of the digestive system.
Almost all animals have a digestive system in which food enters the mouth, is
moved through a long tube, and exits the anus as feces. The food is broken down
into soluble molecules and is moved rhythmically by the smooth muscle in the
walls of the digestive system.
