Maximum continuous rating (MCRME) 6,480 kW @ 136 RPM - Fuel index 65
Limited maximum continuous rating with
the engine power limitation installed 5,832 kW @ 131.3 RPM - Fuel index 60 - Corresponding to 90 % MCR
(MCRlim)
The EPL for MC/MC-C engines limits the engine power by restricting the fuel index to a calculated set value. This
restricts the total amount of fuel that can be injected into the engine and thereby limiting the power the engine can
produce. The limited power value is calculated by following the EEXI calculation guidelines in MEPC 335 (76).
The EPL installation consists of a two position stopper (TPS) with a stop screw and washer (see figure 1 and 2), and a
Technical description of the EPL system sealing arrangement (figure 3). The function of the TPS is to accurately restrict the fuel index and thereby engine
power of the engine to MCRlim. The function of the sealing arrangement is to provide a tamper-proof sealing
solution to demonstrate compliance to administrations and ROs.

The assembled unit (figure 4, 5, and 6) is installed on the fuel index arm and the assembly is sealed (figure 7). The
Technical description of the EPL system stop screw prevents the fuel index from moving beyond the limited position.

The released position of the stopper is achieved by breaking the seal and loosening the stop screw, turning the
Technical description of the EPL system stopper to release position and tightening the stop screw again. This will secure that the new position is the original
MCR position (figure 8).

TPS has been designed to create (i) fixed MCR and (ii) MCRlim (figure 1) for each engine. This is achieved by adjusting
the height of the stopper by using shims with different thicknesses (figure 9), total thickness of which is equal to pre-
calculated height of the TPS. Afterwards, height of the stopper assembly is locked by use of stop-screws. The TPS will
Technical description of the EPL system be assembled by MAN ES onboard and the only one who has the authority to assemble and make any changes to the
TPS thickness is MAN ES.

Once the emergency situation is over, the EPL system has to be reset following the below steps.
1. Establish communication between the remote control position of the engine (eg. bridge or engine control room)
and the personnel resetting the EPL at local manoeuvring stand,
2. Unless it is already below, reduce engine load to approx. 20% below MCRlim. This reduction can be achieved by
decreasing the fuel index value to 51.

1. Procedure of EPL release:
According to MEPC.335(76), the EPL system can ONLY be overridden by the ship's master or the officer in charge of
navigational watch (OICNW) for the purpose of securing the safety of a ship or saving life at sea. The EPL should be
reset as soon as the emergency situation is over. Once it has been decided to release the EPL, the engine room team
shall follow the below guidance to execute the release.
1. Establish continuous communication between the remote control position of the engine (e.g. bridge or engine
control room) and the personnel executing the release at the local engine stand,
2. Unless it is already below, reduce engine load to approx. 20% below MCRlim. This reduction is achieved by
Procedures and methods for releasing the decreasing the index value to 51.
EPL 3. Cut the sealing wire using a suitable wire cutter,
4. Loosen the stop screw sufficiently using a suitable spanner/wrench,
5. Turn the two position stopper (TPS) to override position and tighten the stop screw again,
Note: Ensure the screw is tightened properly, again, so that the TPS is fixed tightly. Otherwise, TPS or the governor or
both may be damaged.
6. Set the index in the chief limiter to original MCR
Time required for un-limiting the EPL Time required for releasing the EPL is estimated to be maximum 15 minutes.

The power produced by the engine is limited by limiting the movement of the fuel index arm of the engine with the
TPS. The limitation is determined by the limited fuel index value which is determined by the height of the stopper. If
the stopper height is altered the power limitation will also change.
To confirm the set value of MCRlim for an engine, it is necessary to check the EEXI fuel index limit given in the EPL
report issued by MAN ES against the installed stopper.
The tamper-proof seal (figure 3) has a laser embossed MAN ES trust marking to determine the use of a genuine seal.
The MAN trust mark is a QR code, and when scanned with mobile device, will display relevant information from a
MAN ES website.
Each seal consists of a unique serial number. This serial number shall be entered when the EPL is released as the
serial number of the removed seal. When the EPL is reset a new seal needs to be installed and the serial number of
this seal shall be entered in the OMM when an entry to reset the EPL is made.

Any use of a power reserve should be recorded in the record page of the OMM for EPL signed by the master and
should be kept on board as required by MEPC 335 76. In case of having used a power reserve, the ship should
without delay notify its Administration or RO responsible for issuing the relevant certificate and the competent
authority of the relevant port of destination with the information recorded.
Please indicate if below log book in this document is used or the log book is to be found in another document:
Log book in this OMM: Log book in other document (specify name/number):
In case the EPL is overridden but the power reserve is not subsequently used, this event should be recorded in the
OMM, as well as in the bridge and engine-room logbooks. The engine-room logbook should record power used
during the period when the override was activated. The EPL should be reset as soon as possible and details of the
Procedure for the report on release and reset should be recorded in the OMM, as well as the bridge and engine-room logbooks.
reset of the EPL
Once the risks have been mitigated, the ship should be operated below the certified level of engine power . The EPL
system should be reactivated or replaced by the crew immediately after the risks have been prevented. The
reactivation or replacement of the EPL system should be confirmed (e.g. validation of mechanical sealing) with
supporting evidence (e.g. engine power log, photo taken at the occasion of resetting the mechanical sealing) by the
Administration or the RO at the earliest opportunity.
Any defect of the EPL system should be reported to the Administration or RO responsible for issuing the relevant
certificate.
The person in charge for administration of the EPL system is (pick one option):
