STORAGE

• Files and programs are stored in storage.

• A file is a collection of data that represents a document, image, database,
or similar.
• A program is a set of instructions that are carried out by the processor.
• More available storage allows users to store more files and programs.
USER INTERFACE
• A user interface is a system that allows a user to interact with a device.
• There are several different types of user interface.
• Command Line Interface (CLI)
• Menu-Driven Interface
• Graphical User Interface (GUI)
• Voice Interface
• Gesture Interface
COMMAND LINE INTERFACE (CLI)
• CLI enables users to enter command as text and the computer
provides results as text.
• This type of interface is found in old systems with limited
storage because it requires little memory.
• One limitation of CLI is that it is hard to memorize and
remember certain commands.
Menu Driven Interface
• The menu driven interface displays a list of options as a menu.
• Selecting one of the option will either trigger a command or display another
menu with further options.
• Menu driven interface are easy to use than the command line interface.
• This type of interface is used in many devices like ATMs, television, and
mobile phones.
Graphical User Interface
• A graphical user interface is controlled by a pointer on the screen and it
uses a screen made of windows and it contains menus and icons.
• Windows are areas of the screen that are dedicated to application or
operating system task.
• Icons are small images that represent an application.
Voice Interface
• A voice interface allows the user to give spoken commands
to a device.
• The device has a voice recognition software that matches
the spoken words against a library of words to find a
match.
• The library of words is always stored online to save on
space.
Advantages of voice interface
• It is hands-free hence often used in vehicles in order to
improve road safety.
Disadvantages of voice interface
• It requires internet to access the library of words
• Sometimes the software cannot find a match for the
voice phrases.
• Sometimes the software can give unwanted output.
Gesture interface

• The user controls the device by performing a gesture

using fingers.
• This can ether be by swiping, pinching to zoom in and
out.
Software securities
• Security features helps prevents unauthorized access of data in digital devices.
• When a device in powered on, the user has to enter a password or a PIN before
the device can be used.
• Another security feature is Locks.
• A lock makes the device inactive so that it requires a password or a pin to
reactivate it.
• Some systems may wipe the data in the device if incorrect passwords attempts are
entered.
• To wipe is to delete files from a device.
Features of a strong password
• It must be at least 8 characters
• It must combine uppercase and lowercase letters
• It must include numbers
• It must include special characters like !,@,$
Peripheral Devices
• Peripheral devices are devices that can be connected to a computer,
such as a PC or tablet device.
• There are three types of peripheral devices:
• Input
• Output
• storage
Input peripheral devices
• Input peripherals are devices that send data to the computer.
• They allow the user to control the computer or store data captured
from sources outside the system.
• They include: keyboards, pointing devices and scanning devices
Keyboards
• Keyboards use buttons known as keys, which users press to input text
or to interact with software.
• Keyboards send data to the computer either using a wired or wireless
connection.
• Combinations of key presses allow the user to access common
software commands called shortcuts.
Pointing device
• A pointer is used on a screen to select displayed objects.
• There are different types of pointing devices.

• Mouse: A mouse uses an optical sensor recognize the movement of the device.
• Tracker ball: A tracker ball is rolled to move the pointer.
• Track pad: A track pad surface senses finger movement, touches and presses.
• Joy stick: they are commonly used on games controllers to move
sprites.
• Graphics tablets: a graphic tablet is used with a stylus (electronic
pen). These devices are commonly used by digital artists.
