Non nobis solum natis sumus

: Volunteerism
Not ourselves alone are we born

What is your purpose in joining this summer leadership camp? Are you being pressured by
someone? Or you’d decided to join because your crush is also joining? Or someone told you that
free t-shirt will be distributed in the camp? Now, what do you think, what is volunteerism? I was
not surprised how do you defined volunteerism, in fact, general population will tell you in the
same manner. Even Google, it will tell you that volunteerism is a work that is not being force and
not get paid. Indeed, it is the classical definition of volunteerism. But their is an untold mechanism
about volunteerism, reason why I don’t believe on that definition. But, before going further to what
I believe what is volunteerism. Allow me to share my cause to you!

Aside from being a SK chairperson, I am a trained Volunteer Emergency Medical Technician, and
personally I am an advocate to pre-hospital care and this is the reason why SK Manuel Guianga
is committed to Emergency Medical Services or EMS. This commitment is being included to our
priority program. Infact, we able to establish Manuel Guianga Emergency Medical Services, and
this coming December 3 we will celebrating our 4 years in the service. This initiative utilizing
volunteer-based model, where-in our staff and medical technician giving service to the community
voluntarily. Last month according to our inventory 955 lives were able to receive a pre-hospital
intervention and transfer to definitive care. Among this 955 lives are stories that moved and very
personal to us. In this afternoon, allow me to unfold one of those 955 lives.

On August 6, 2021, 1:30 in the afternoon when we noticed a rushing sound of footsteps heading
towards our office, then a few seconds after, a man shout, ‘Naay natagak nga bata. Naa sa
health center karon’. Five our volunteer technician and responder proceeded immediately to the
health center. When the volunteers open the door, they saw a nine year old boy vomiting large
quantity of blood, pale, with rapid breathing and unresponsive. After seeing his condition, the
volunteers immediately started pre-hospital intervention by prioritizing his airway by making it
open and clear from any secretion, administered high flow oxygen thru BVM, keeping the patient
warm, administer intravenous fluid or IV, and transported to definitive care. Then it was 2:00 in
the afternoon when the boy handover to the ER. He was intubated and putted to pediatric
intensive care unit. A day after of his admission, the boy was extubated, the tube in his throat was
pulled out and he can breath by his own. To cut the story short after 7 days in the hospital he was
discharged and now fully-recovered. A day after, his Lolo visited our office and stating these
words, Daghan salamat! Kadto nga adlaw sa akong pagkakita sa akong apo, ningbalik
tanan memory nako sa iyaha og sa kataposan naka ingon ko nga kinahanglan na guro
nako dawaton kong unsa man ang mahitabo sa iyaha. Bantog dako kaayo akong
pasalamat nga wala mo ming buhi sa iyaha og karon nakauli sya nga himsog og buhi.
Bottomline, ayaw lang gyud mo og buhi gunit ragyud mo. Kidding aside, this story will not be a
history without the efforts of the volunteer who’ve racing against death. And definitely this will not
be volunteerism without these principle. Volunteerism should be free choice that’s incorporated
with our free will. Volunteerism should make difference, this statement talking about impact.
Volunteerism should create your own community. That means, whatever cause it is, beliefs and
advocacy you have, it will not be succeeded with out the help of others.
Thus, earlier I ask you on the purpose of you joining here, generally you responded, because you
want to learn, help and explore. You know what there are couple reason why peoples engage in
volunteering and some of the reason are the following.

Top of the reason is the community. People volunteering because they wanted help and to live to
a better society. This is what we expected and we wanted to look like. That we are not wasting
our effort, and not getting tired of raising our voice to be heard because we believe that our
advocacy could change our community. Next to community, Use skills and explore strengths is
related in the purpose of engaging towards volunteering because you wanted that your skills and
strengths could be use out of your domain and to harness and acquired knew idea from the
community. Personally affected, you engaging to volunteerism because you shared the same
cause. Bottom three are meet new people, create new friends and because of your family.
Further, does anyone told you that because volunteering I was able to meet new friends,
incorporated my skills with real time experience in the community, build confidence, feel happy,
not alone and get excited. And does anyone told you that ages 30-80’s who are involved in
volunteering are healthy, less stress and depressed, and above all without volunteering you can
not feel being truly accomplished and be proud that because of you (my life is change) your
community will leave in comfort and a better place. And for me this the highest calling to serve
your own community. These are a life-changing reward, that never mention on these definition.
Earlier I park a statement, that I don’t believe on this definition of volunteering. What I believe is
when Robin Simmons operationally define volunteering, working to build a stronger
community while having fun, staying healthy and bringing out your best self.

Operationally defining volunteering is not enough to encourage you to do volunteerism, and it

needs for you to find your on why? The cause, the beliefs that you think it may help community,
the root of your advocacy or your foundation. And what we are doing this afternoon is finding your
own why. During registration you are ask to choose among these topics LGBTQ+, Environmental
protection, sports and development, Health and education. And Look around, there are five
facilitator holding printed material written those particular topics. With in 1 minute I want everyone
to please proceed to the that particular area where your topics are located. With in 15 mins you
need to discussed and identify specific problems about your topics. Included on that duration is to
rank those problem. Each member will give their own votes on the problem base on the urgency
of the problem. The problem that cast the majority votes will be your bases on answering these
following question, What result should we expected in answering the problem? How we will solve
this problem? Who will be the recipient? Why we are doing this? And you will be given another 5
minutes to answer this questions. After each group will be given 3 minutes present their output.
