Active and
Passive Voice
Active Voice
- Applies ONLY to sentences with S – TV – DO pattern.
 S-TV-DO means Subject – Transitive Verb – Direct
Object
 Subject is the one talking (I, we) or being talked to (you),
or being talked about (he, she, it, etc.) in a sentence
 Transitive verb is an action verb that always needs a DO
 Direct Object is the one being affected by the action of
the verb. It answers the question who or what after the
verb.

SUBJECT – VERB AGREEMENT


If the subject is singular, the verb must also be singular. If the subject is plural, the verb must also be
plural

VERB PHRASE – refers to the helping verb/auxiliary verb + the main verb (usually an action verb)
There are 23 helping verbs.
Active voice in the simple tenses
 the subject is the doer of the action
 is usually more preferred than passive voice

Example: Sir A / teaches / English. => Active

English is taught by Sir A => Passive

Sir A cooks Adobo. => Adobo is cooked by Sir A

Simple past tense [-d or –ed form of the verb; -en, -n, irregular form of
the verb]
Active voice in the progressive tenses
 the subject is the doer of the action
 is usually more preferred than passive voice

Example: The learners / are studying / short stories. => Active

Short stories are being studied by the learners. => Passive
Setonians were conducting an experiment. => Active
An experiment was being conducted by Setonians. => Passive

Present progressive/continuous tense [is/are -ing form of the verb]


Past progressive/continuous tense [was/were –ing form of the verb]
Active voice in the perfect tenses
 the subject is the doer of the action
 is usually more preferred than passive voice

Example: The learners / have completed / the projects. => Active

The learners’ projects have been completed [by them] => Passive

Present perfect tense [has/have + past participle form of the verb]


Active voice in the perfect tenses
 the subject is the doer of the action
 is usually more preferred than passive voice

Example: A team / had filed / a protest. => Active

A protest had been filed by a team. => Passive

Past perfect tense [had + past participle form of the verb]

 the subject is the doer of the action
 is usually more preferred than passive voice

Example: The athletes / had completed / the warm-up activities. => Active

Past perfect tense [had + past participle form of the verb]


Rules in transforming active to passive
1. Change subject pronouns to object pronouns.
2. Put the original subject after the by phrase.
3. Make the original DO [IO] as the new subject.
4. Add one more helping verb to the new sentence.
5. Maintain the tense/aspect of the verb of the
original sentence.
