1. A flat, isothermal heating panel, 0.5 m wide by 1 m high,

is mounted to one wall of a large room. The surface of
the panel has an emissivity of 0.90 and is maintained at
400 K. If the walls and air of the room are at 300 K, what
is the net rate at which heat is transferred from the panel
to the room?
PROPERTIES: Air (Tf = 350K, 1 atm): ν = 20.9 × 10-6 m 2 /s,
k = 0.03 W/m⋅K, α = 29.9 × 10-6 m 2 /s, Pr = 0.700.
(Use:-The heat loss from the panel by convection and radiation
exchange is q = ℎ̅A(TS-T∞)+εσA(𝑇𝑆4 − 𝑇𝑠𝑢𝑟 4 ).)

(2 marks)
(a) 740 W
(b) 520W
(c) 920W
(d) 610 W
Ans :-option (a)

Solution:-
KNOWN: Height, width, emissivity and temperature of heating
panel. Room air and wall temperature.
FIND: Net rate of heat transfer from panel to room.
SCHEMATIC:

ASSUMPTIONS:(1) Quiescent air, (2) Walls of room form a

large enclosure, (3) Negligible heat loss from back of panel.
PROPERTIES: Air (Tf= 350K, 1 atm): ν = 20.9 × 10-6 m 2 /s,
k = 0.03 W/m ⋅K, α = 29.9 × 10-6 m 2 /s, Pr = 0.700.
ANALYSIS:
The heat loss from the panel by convection and
radiation exchange is

q = ℎ̅A(TS-T∞)+εσA(𝑇𝑆4 − 𝑇𝑠𝑢𝑟

With

And using the Churchill-chu correlation from a vertical

̅ℎ = (196 k ) / L

2. Determine the maximum allowable uniform heat flux
that may be imposed at a wall heating panel 1 m high, if
the maximum temperature is not to exceed 37ºC when
the ambient air temperature 25ºC.

Ans:- option ( c)

Solution:-

KNOWN: Vertical panel with uniform heat flux exposed to

ambient air.
FIND: Allowable heat flux if maximum temperature is not to

ANALYSIS:
Following the treatment of Section , for a vertical plate with
uniform heat flux (constant q′′s ), the heat flux can be evaluated
as

𝑞𝑆" = ℎ̅ ∆TL/2
where ∆TL/2 = Ts(L/s) - T∞ ......(1)
And ℎ̅ is evaluated using an appropriate correlation for
a constant temperature vertical plate.

∆Tx = Tx - T∞
= 1.15 (x/L)1/5 ∆TL/2 ..........(2)
And recognizing that the maximum temperature
occur at the top edge, x=L, use eq (2) to find

∆ TL/2 = (37-25)ºC / 1.15(1/1)1/5

= 10.4ºC or
TL/2 = 35.4ºC.
Calculate now the Rayleigh number base upon ∆TL/2,

Solution:-

J/kg⋅K = 1.514 × 10-7 m 2 /s, Pr= 4.62, β = 361.9 × 10-6 K-1.
ANALYSIS:
The heat rate per unit length by free convection
