SPEAK UP ENGLISH CLUB PLURAL RULES

General Rule: Add "s"

For most nouns, simply add "s" to the singular form.

- Cat → Cats

- Book → Books

- Car → Cars

### Add "es" for Nouns Ending in -s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, or -z

When a noun ends in -s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, or -z, add "es".

- **Bus** → **Buses**

- **Class** → **Classes**

- **Brush** → **Brushes**

- **Watch** → **Watches**

- **Box** → **Boxes**

- **Quiz** → **Quizzes**

### Change -f or -fe to -ves

For some nouns ending in -f or -fe, change the -f or -fe to -ves.

- **Leaf** → **Leaves**

- **Wolf** → **Wolves**

- **Knife** → **Knives**

**Note:** Not all nouns ending in -f or -fe follow this rule.

- **Roof** → **Roofs**

- **Chief** → **Chiefs**

### Nouns Ending in a Consonant + y

For nouns ending in a consonant followed by "y", change the "y" to "i" and add "es".

- **City** → **Cities**

- **Baby** → **Babies**

- **Party** → **Parties**
### Nouns Ending in a Vowel + y

For nouns ending in a vowel followed by "y", simply add "s".

- **Key** → **Keys**

- **Day** → **Days**

- **Boy** → **Boys**

### Irregular Plurals

Some nouns have irregular plural forms that do not follow the standard rules.

- **Child** → **Children**

- **Man** → **Men**

- **Woman** → **Women**

- **Tooth** → **Teeth**

- **Foot** → **Feet**

- **Mouse** → **Mice**

- **Goose** → **Geese**

- **Person** → **People**

### Nouns with Identical Singular and Plural Forms

Some nouns have the same form for both singular and plural.

- **Sheep** → **Sheep**

- **Fish** → **Fish**
