Present Tense
(Simple present, present Continuous, present perfect, present perfect continuous)

What are the most important points that we have to take note of while studying
tenses?
Try to understand the following:
1. Subject of a sentence - (singular & Plural)
2. Helping verbs/Auxiliary verbs
[do verb (do, does, did)
be verb (is/am/are/was/were/be/being/been),
have verb (has/have/had)
3. Verb
Singular & Plural of verb (eg. plural verb-go, singular verb-goes)

Note: (There are other forms of verbs to be considered as well)

Present Tense
Simple Present (does/do)
[We use the present simple for things that we do regularly, facts, habits, truths and for
permanent situations. We often use adverbs of frequency and time expressions like
‘every day’, ‘on Saturdays’ etc.]
e. g.
I swim every day before breakfast.
Jake doesn’t get up that early though.
It usually begins around June.

Present Continuous (is/am/are)

[We use present continuous for things that are happening at the time we are speaking,
for temporary situations, and activities that are in progress.
We often use time expressions like ‘at the moment’, ‘this week’, ‘these days.]
e. g.
We’re staying in a fantastic hotel in Goa this week.
What are you doing these days?
I hope you aren’t working too hard.
Present continuous and 'going to'
Use ‘going to’-
To talk about something, we have decided to do in the future, but not arranged yet. E. g. I am going to spend a
year travelling.
We also use ‘be going to’ for something that we expect to happen because we know that it is very likely.
We can’t use the present continuous in this way-‘They say that the rainy season is going to start soon.’
Use the Present Continuous
To talk about something, we have decided to do in the future, and made arrangements for. It is definite, not
just an idea. E. g. I am meeting a client at 2 pm.

Present Perfect (has/have)
We use present perfect in several ways:
1-To talk about our experience in the past. We don’t say when it happened because we are interested in
experience, not the time or date. We often use the words ‘ever’ and ‘never’.
e.g. Have you ever been here?
I’ve never been to Goa.
2-To talk about situations that started in the past and are continuing now. We sometimes ask question with
‘how long’+ the present perfect and we answer it with the words ‘for’ or ‘since’.
e.g. She’s been there for two days.
It’s been really hot since then.
3-To say whether an action has happened or not at the present time. The word ‘just’ ‘already’ and ‘yet’ are
very common with this use of present perfect.
e.g. I’ve already done some sunbathing.
The sun’s just disappeared.

We use past simple when an action or situation happens and finishes or completed in the past.
We often include time reference. We usually say or know when it happens.
e. g.
We arrived two days ago.
I didn’t realise before that it usually begins around June.
