2. COURSE DEVELOPMENT

2.1 Industry and market needs

There continues to be a steady demand for training in non-destructive testing.

Many students studying in this field do not aim to achieve a major
qualification. Their aim is to achieve one or more individual units of
competency relevant to the NDT area. At the same time they may wish to
achieve certification under Australian Standard AS 3998-1992 "Non-Destructive
testing - Qualification and Certification of Personnel - General Engineering" or
Australian Standard AS 3669-2001 "Non-Destructive Testing - Qualifications and
Registration of Personnel - Aerospace".

This course allows students to achieve only those units of competency they are
aiming at, as well as preparing them for certification under AS 3998 or AS 3669.

2.2 Review for re-accreditation

3. COURSE OUTCOMES

3.1 Course outcomes

This course provides training leading to the achievement of units of competency

in specific areas of non-destructive testing, as selected by students, that are

3.2 Competency standards

This course has been assembled with reference specifically to the Metal and
Engineering Industry National Competency Standards.

To provide a link between the National Competency Standards units and

off-the-job training, modules from the National Metal and Engineering Curriculum
(NMEC) bank have been mapped where appropriate with competency units. Where
necessary some competency units have been aligned to modules from the National
Communications Standards.

In some cases, where appropriate modules do not exist in the NMEC bank, new
modules have been created specificially to deliver the knowledge and skills
relating to the relevant competency unit.

The relationship between the competency standards and the modules is detailed in
the Course Competency Units Table at the end of Part B.

3.3 General competencies

Since this TAFE statement course is intended to enable students to achieve

knowledge and skills relevant to specific techniques in non-destructive testing,
it does not address the development of general competencies.

3.4 Recognition given to course

This course utilises national units of competency, which are recognised by the
Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services ITAB as counting towards career
progression.

If students elect to undertake appropriate theory and practical examinations

they can be certified against Australian Standard AS 3998-1992 "Non-Destructive
testing - Qualification and Certification of Personnel - General Engineering" or
Australian Standard AS 3669-2001 "Non-Destructive Testing - Qualifications and
Registration of Personnel - Aerospace" as NDT technicians in the chosen

Modules from Group 75 and Group 76 must be completed, in order to achieve

individual Unit completion. The modules to be completed will depend on the
Unit(s) selected. For details, please contact your local campus.

4.3 Exit points

As only one unit of competency from Group 1 (the non-destructive testing units)
is required to complete the course, there is no intermediate point at which
students may exit this course with a qualification.

Students who complete any modules and who exit the course before completion will
be provided with a transcript showing all modules completed.

4.4 On-job requirements

To complete this course, certain on-the-job requirements need to be met.

Achievement of the on-the-job requirements need to be reported on by a
workplace supervisor possessing the skills and knowledge of the unit being
undertaken. These requirements are reported in the workplace report (WPM)
modules.

4.5 Customisation

Customisation of the supporting curriculum modules for the purposes of

accommodating a specific training organisation's needs is permissible within the
current national training package customisation guidelines.

The units of competency are designed to provide flexibility and scope for
enterprises to apply local procedures, processes and particular operating
requirements in achieving the overall unit outcome.

4.6 Entry requirements

There are no formal educational requirements for this course.

PLEASE NOTE

Entry requirements are the minimum qualifications, attributes, skills and /or

requested.

A statement from the student's employer/former employer or a statutory

declaration stating who created the work must accompany the portfolio. In
addition a report must be included, that clearly shows how the various items
of evidence provided satisfies the granting of RPL against the module purpose.

It is the responsibility of the student to assemble the material listed above.

Units of competence awarded through another registered training organisation

will be recognised and credit granted accordingly.

5. ASSESSMENT

5.1 Assessment strategy

Achievement of the units of competency in this course are measured by success in

the modules mapped against the units (refer to the Course Competency Unit
Table). These modules fall into two groups:

· Curriculum modules, which develop the knowledge and skills that underpin
competency. Assessment in these modules may be by practical tests, by
written/oral testing, by practical projects or by assignments. Curriculum
modules either provide a graded result or a pass/fail result.
· Workplace Modules, which are used to measure effective implementation of the
unit of competency in the workplace. Sufficient evidence must be gathered to
meet the criteria set out in each of the workplace modules. Student success in
the workplace modules is reported on a Pass/Fail basis.

If a student is to be assessed directly against a unit of competency in the

workplace itself (rather than through a combination of off-the-job and on-the
job assessment), then the assessor must ensure that sufficient evidence is
collected; this evidence must address the assessment criteria outlined in the
associated curriculum modules for that competency unit mapping, as well as the
relevant workplace assessment criteria for that mapping.

The assessment for this course is designed to be competency based,

workplace focused and workplace relevant.

The assessment approaches are targeted to the collection of sufficient evidence

to assess both theoretical and practical components. Learning and assessment
methods focus on the clustering and integration of knowledge, skills and
attitudes required of people working in non-destructive testing and related
fields.

Assessment methods used in this course include both written or oral tests and
practical tests and assignments.

The assessment evaluates the students' level of acquisition of theoretical

knowledge, ie, their grasp of technical terminology and applications applicable
to a variety of industrial situations. Practical exercises assess skills in
the use of equipment used in the manufacturing industry. Practical exercises
test either product or process, as appropriate.

The emphasis of assessment is on teacher/trainer judgment and holistic

assessment against module purpose. The focus is on the clustering and
integration of areas of knowledge, skills and attitudes, rather than on a
"checklist" or atomistic approach.

6/02/2003 Status: Approved

(C)2002 NSW TAFE Commission - Manufacturing and Engineering - Mechanical & Materials Program Area 9
unless otherwise indicated in point 5 in part A
Statement Of Attainment In Non-Destructive Testing
B. Course information

Informal (formative) assessment is an integral and vital part of the teaching

strategy, which provides feedback to learners. This is an on-going process of
monitoring learner progress.

Formal (summative) assessment is a measure of the learner's achievement against

the module purpose and its learning outcomes. From an educational point of view
it is not desirable to spend more than 10% of the module hours, or a maximum of
15% for mainly practical modules, on summative assessment. Information on
assessment is provided in each module.

Summative assessment may also be an ongoing process, but also determines the
learner's results and is the basis of reporting on learner achievement.

The Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act (1992) makes it unlawful to treat

people with a disability less fairly than people without a disability. In the
context of this course, the principle of Reasonable Adjustment is applied to
ensure that participants with a disability have equitable access to all aspects
of the learning situation. For assessment, this means that artificial barriers
to their demonstrating competence are removed.

Examples of reasonable adjustment in assessment include:

- substitution of an oral assessment task for a written one provision of extra
time
- use of an interpreter
- use of adaptive technology.

A range of assessment methods, consistent with the teaching and learning

methods, has been incorporated into modules to ensure that all the intended
outcomes of the course are addressed and that the assessment is valid, reliable
and appropriate.

6. DELIVERY OF COURSE

6.1 Delivery modes

Delivery of this program includes on and off-the-job elements; typically the

on-the-job focus is on the application and assessment of work activities, and
the off-the-job focus is on the underpinning knowledge and skills.

The learning outcomes and assessment strategies for the individual modules,
together with the workplace assessment requirements, provide for an integrated
on and off-the-job delivery. Generally, there will be substantial work based
practice and further development of what is delivered off-the-job.

This course should be adjusted to incorporate the principles of reasonable

adjustment in accordance with the requirements of the Commonwealth Disability
Discrimination Act (1992).

Reasonable adjustment may need to be made to delivery methods for learners with
disabilities. Adjustments to delivery may include:
- assistance with reading (eg, explicitly teaching procedures)
- adjusting content for the target group
- adjusting teaching sequence
- providing extra practice/time to acquire skills
- providing extra demonstrations and explanations of skills and tasks
- using adaptive technology
- providing customised learning materials (eg, with pictorial cue)
- providing specialist tutorial assistance

TYPICAL ATTENDANCE Variable, depending on local need

This course is for people who want to develop competencies in the metal and
engineering industry, specialising in non-destructive testing (NDT). You can
achieve units of competency under the Metal and Engineering Training Package
MEM98 relating to any of the main fields of NDT at production operator,
technician or management level. You will learn about the advantages,
limitations and applications of each NDT method and how to carry out specific
testing with normal test equipment.

Course duration will vary depending on the competency standard unit(s)

selected; it will generally depend on the duration of the supporting curriculum
module(s) as well as the signing off of the appropriate work experience.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES NDT tester in the particular techniques studied, or, if

specified modules have been satisfactorily completed, certified technician (for
specific testing techniques) under relevant Australian Standards. Completion of
competency standard units from this course will enhance your career progression
under the Federal Metal Industries Award.

ARTICULATION Depending on the units and modules completed, credit transfer may
be available in qualifications under the Metal and Engineering Training Package
MEM98.
