8. Classification information
The duration of this course will depend on the duration of the units of
competency undertaken. The minimum time to achieve a unit of competency in the
course is 18 hours.
2. COURSE DEVELOPMENT
This course allows students to achieve only those units of competency they are
aiming at, as well as preparing them for certification under AS 3998 or AS 3669.
3. COURSE OUTCOMES
This course has been assembled with reference specifically to the Metal and
Engineering Industry National Competency Standards.
In some cases, where appropriate modules do not exist in the NMEC bank, new
modules have been created specificially to deliver the knowledge and skills
relating to the relevant competency unit.
The relationship between the competency standards and the modules is detailed in
the Course Competency Units Table at the end of Part B.
This course utilises national units of competency, which are recognised by the
Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services ITAB as counting towards career
progression.
This course provides knowledge and skills which prepare students for
certification under Australian Standard AS 3998-1992 "Non-Destructive
Testing - Qualification and Certification of Personnel - General Engineering" or
Australian Standard AS 3669-2001 "Non-Destructive Testing - Qualifications and
Registration of Personnel - Aerospace".
Persons aiming to carry our radiographic testing must be licenced by the NSW
Environmental Protection Authority. Successful completion of the module 1144A
4. COURSE STRUCTURE
Group 75 contains the curriculum modules which develop the knowledge and skills
required to achieve the units of competency.
Group 76 contain the Workplace Modules (WPM) which are the means of reporting
successful workplace experience relating to the units.
Your local college will be able to advise you on the relationships between the
units of competency and the curriculum and WPM modules required to achieve the
units.

As only one unit of competency from Group 1 (the non-destructive testing units)
is required to complete the course, there is no intermediate point at which
students may exit this course with a qualification.
Students who complete any modules and who exit the course before completion will
be provided with a transcript showing all modules completed.
4.5 Customisation
The units of competency are designed to provide flexibility and scope for
enterprises to apply local procedures, processes and particular operating
requirements in achieving the overall unit outcome.
PLEASE NOTE
Entry requirements are the minimum qualifications, attributes, skills and /or
experience that students must have to enter a course.
Students who have enrolled in this course and who have completed formal
training or who have relevant life/work experience and consider they are able
to meet any individual module purpose, may seek recognition of their prior
learning (RPL). Students may have to take a challenge test and/or an interview
with specialist staff.
5. ASSESSMENT
· Curriculum modules, which develop the knowledge and skills that underpin
competency. Assessment in these modules may be by practical tests, by
written/oral testing, by practical projects or by assignments. Curriculum
modules either provide a graded result or a pass/fail result.
· Workplace Modules, which are used to measure effective implementation of the
unit of competency in the workplace. Sufficient evidence must be gathered to
meet the criteria set out in each of the workplace modules. Student success in
the workplace modules is reported on a Pass/Fail basis.
Assessment methods used in this course include both written or oral tests and
practical tests and assignments.
Summative assessment may also be an ongoing process, but also determines the
learner's results and is the basis of reporting on learner achievement.
6. DELIVERY OF COURSE
The learning outcomes and assessment strategies for the individual modules,
together with the workplace assessment requirements, provide for an integrated
on and off-the-job delivery. Generally, there will be substantial work based
practice and further development of what is delivered off-the-job.
Reasonable adjustment may need to be made to delivery methods for learners with
disabilities. Adjustments to delivery may include:
- assistance with reading (eg, explicitly teaching procedures)
- adjusting content for the target group
- adjusting teaching sequence
- providing extra practice/time to acquire skills
- providing extra demonstrations and explanations of skills and tasks
- using adaptive technology
- providing customised learning materials (eg, with pictorial cue)
- providing specialist tutorial assistance
6.2 Resources
Vocational Qualifications
-------------------------
Teachers/trainers/assessors must be able to demonstrate current vocational
competence. Usually this requires completion of a relevant degree, diploma or
other vocational qualification. The vocational competencies must be at least at
the level of the competencies being delivered and/or assessed.
Teachers/trainers/assessors should have a broad perspective and depth of
understanding of the vocational area.
Relevant Experience
-------------------
Teachers/trainers must be able to demonstrate a broad perspective and depth of
understanding of the vocational area based on current and relevant experience in
the industry or community sector. Usually, this will be a minimum of three
years experience gained no longer than five years previously. It may have been
gained through employment, professional development, industry or community
liaison, return to industry programs, community service or a combination of
these and other relevant methods.
Educational Qualifications
--------------------------
As a minimum all TAFE NSW trainers/assessors must meet the qualification
requirements detailed in the AQTF Standards 7.3 and 7.4 (see the note below), or
equivalent.
Teachers, trainers and assessors who are involved in on-line delivery and
assessment should be competent on-line facilitators. Should professional
development be required, training can be provided by professional organisations
such as TAFE NSW Professional Development Network (PDN) on-line program.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
---------------
AQTF Requirements
-----------------
Under the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF), registered training
organisations (RTOs) must ensure that delivery and assessment personnel have
appropriate qualifications and experience. It is the responsibility of the
RTO to verify that its employees have the required qualifications or their
equivalent.
Any competency standard unit or curriculum module completed in this course can
be used to obtain credit in any other course which contains that unit or module.

2. Handbook description
This course is for people who want to develop competencies in the metal and
engineering industry, specialising in non-destructive testing (NDT). You can
achieve units of competency under the Metal and Engineering Training Package
MEM98 relating to any of the main fields of NDT at production operator,
technician or management level. You will learn about the advantages,
limitations and applications of each NDT method and how to carry out specific
testing with normal test equipment.
ARTICULATION Depending on the units and modules completed, credit transfer may
be available in qualifications under the Metal and Engineering Training Package
MEM98.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
There are no formal educational requirements for this course.
3. Student selection
SELECTION METHOD Your selection into this course will be based on the
information provided on the TAFE NSW Application Form.

be eligible for entry in a course BEFORE selection criteria are applied (see
Section B, Course information, 4.6 Entry requirements).
Selection methods are the tools used to evaluate students against the selection
criteria.
5. Course grading
TAFE Advanced Standing Arrangements and/or Standard Exemptions which have been
created in respect of modules in this course are shown in Part B of the syllabus
of each module. The module syllabus also provides information about appropriate
evidence for assessing recognition applications.
