MULTIPLEXING AND POWER SUPPLY

I- MULTIPLEX LAYOUT

A - INTRODUCTION

Multiplexing consists of enabling many digital signals to travel between

various electrical devices on a single transmission channel in the form of
2 wires:

DATA and DATA B (bar) for the BODY VAN and COMFORT VAN.

CAN HIGH AND CAN LOW for the CAN.

B - DEFINITION OF MULTIPLEXING

Multiplexing is a method of operating electrical equipment which

requires a special network.

A multiplex network consists of a single circuit which connects all ECUs:

the bus.

All messages sent on this circuit contain an "information" or "command"

part and a recipient identification part.

Multiplexing uses two communications protocols: the VAN, vehicle area

network, and the CAN, controller area network.

The associated layout provides a vast reduction in harness complexity

and allows the customer to be offered new functions.

C - INTEREST OF MULTIPLEXING

Multiplexing leads to:

• simpler wiring,

• more functions (for the same number of wires).

CITROËN C3 TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION

2
Section 1

D - DESIGN OF THE MULTIPLEX NETWORK

1 - General details

This vehicle has 4 multiplexed networks:

• CAN,

• BODY VAN 1,

• BODY VAN 2,

• COMFORT VAN.

These various networks are managed by a central ECU called the BSI
(built -in systems interface) which is also known as the body
computer.

2 - CAN

a - Specific feature of the CAN

The CAN connects all the power train ECUs such as the braking
system, the automatic gearbox ECU and the engine management
ECU.

The speed with which information is processed on the CAN is a

safety feature (transfer speed of 250 Kbits/s).

The CAN is "multi-master", where each ECU permanently

broadcasts information.

The broadcast information is retrieved by the ECUs which need

it.

For example, if the vehicle has an ABS ECU, it places the

following information on the CAN:

• vehicle speed,

• longitudinal acceleration,

• distance travelled.

Note: The traction control option (ESP) includes the ABS ECU.

3 - BODYWORK VAN 1

a - Specific feature of the BODY VAN 1

The BODY VAN 1 is known as a safety network.

The BODY VAN 1 connects the airbag system as well as the

engine relay unit which incorporates the vehicle's power electrical
control such as the headlamps.

The BODY VAN 1 transmits user actions to the BSI via the switch
module at the steering wheel.

The BODY VAN 1 is called a "master slave" network.

Note: VAN stands for "vehicle area network".

a - Specific feature of the BODY VAN 2

The BODY VAN 2 connects devices such as the alarm and the
diesel additive system (particle filter).

The BODY VAN 2 is called a "master slave" network.

The transfer speed of this network is 62.5 Kbits/s.

5 - COMFORT VAN

a - Specific feature of the COMFORT VAN

The COMFORT VAN connects ECUs such as the multifunction

screen, the control panel, the radio and the air conditioning.

The COMFORT VAN is a "multi-master" network where each ECU

permanently broadcasts information.

The broadcast information is retrieved by the ECUs which need it

(transfer speed of 125 Kbits / s).

The ECUs connected to the COMFORT VAN acquire the

information from the power train (via the BSI) to inform the
driver of vehicle status.

The COMFORT VAN acts as the "car / driver" interface.

IV - ELECTRICAL SUPPLY

A - GENERAL DETAILS

The electrical status of the vehicle is determined by 4 variables:

• main status (off, +ACCESSORIES, +IGNITION, +CRANKING, etc),

• consumption mode ("nominal" or "economy"),
• load shedding level (where certain heavy electrical power consumers
are not authorised to operate for a period of time),
• vehicle configuration (customer, factory, park, showroom).

C - CONSUMPTION MODE: "NOMINAL" OR "ECONOMY"

The "nominal" or "economy" consumption mode is only available in the

alternator not operational status (engine not running).

Note: Alternator not operational (ANO) corresponds to the engine not

running status when the battery is supplying the electrical current.

CITROËN C3 TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION

22
Section 1

1 - Nominal mode:

Nominal mode is active for a 30 minute timed period after the

alternator operational information (engine running) disappears.

This 30 minute timed period can be used in 2 different ways

depending on the position of the ignition key:

Note: All electrical functions are authorised in nominal mode.

The system switches to economy mode when all conditions are

satisfied.

2 - Economy mode:

Economy mode prevents the battery from being discharged when

the engine is not running.
Non permanent electrical functions are deactivated regardless of
ignition key position.
Only a few permanent functions and some of the permanent
functions with locked request are authorised in economy mode.
A permanent function is one that performs a service even when the

running information disappears

D - NETWORK STAND-BY / WAKE UP FUNCTIONS

To reduce power consumption by the ECUs when the engine is not

running, a stand-by and wake up strategy is applied to the vehicle's ECU
supply and networks.

1 - CAN

a - Setting the CAN to stand-by

Communication between the ECUs is operational for 30 seconds

minimum after the ignition is switched off (power latch).

b - Waking up the CAN

When the ignition is on, communication between the ECUs is

operational on the CAN and the network is woken up.

CITROËN C3 TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION

24
Section 1

2 - BODYWORK VAN AND COMFORT VAN

a - Setting the BSI and BODY and COMFORT VANs to stand-by

The stand-by strategy consists of putting the VAN networks to

sleep first and then the BSI in the following order:

STEP FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

A The networks and the BSI are woken up

All the conditions for maintaining the networks are scanned and
B
none is detected
The BSI then counts down a 60 second timer
This timer continues to be counted down for as long as no network
C maintaining conditions are present
This timer is reset when a network maintaining or wake-up condition
appears
If nothing is detected at the end of this timer, the BSI warns the
ECUs in a frame that the VANs will be set to stand-by in 5
D
seconds.
Upon receiving this frame, all ECUs can save their data
After the 5 second timer, if no network maintaining or wake-up
E conditions are detected, the BSI cuts off the +VAN supply
The networks are sent to sleep
The BSI applies a 60 second timer again in nominal mode
This timer continues to be counted down for as long as no BSI
F maintaining conditions are present
This timer is reset when a BSI maintaining or wake-up condition
appears
At the end of this timer, the BSI and the networks are sent to
G
sleep.

Setting the BSI to stand-by

The BSI switches to stand-by mode 60 seconds (nominal mode)
or 15 seconds (economy mode) after the COMFORT VAN and
BODYWORK VAN have gone to sleep if:
• all BSI direct wake-up inputs are inactive,
• the interior lamp and the boot lamp are off,
• the electric windows are not operating,
• no diagnostic sessions are in progress.

CITROËN C3 TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION

25
Section 1

E - WAKING UP THE VANS

When the VAN is on stand-by, the two buses (DATA and DATA B) are not
operational.
Each ECU monitors external events which cause the network to return to
a fully operational state.
When a wake-up event is detected, the ECU in question draws current
from DATA B.
This power consumption is detected by the BSI.
The BSI controls a relay which switches the +VAN supply for all VAN
ECUs (bodywork and comfort).

IMPORTANT: All wake-up requests for the BODYWORK or

COMFORT network wake up both networks
(BODYWORK and COMFORT).

There are 3 ways of waking up the ECUs:
• wake-up by a direct BSI input,
• wake-up by the network,
• wake-up by the key being turned to the +ACC or +IGN position.
Each network ECU monitors external events which cause it and the
network to wake up.
When an event of this type is detected, the ECU in question draws
current from DATA B.

CITROËN C3 TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION

CITROËN C3 TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION

27
Section 1

a - Waking up the COMFORT VAN

The control panel and non RT3 radio can request that the
COMFORT VAN is woken up:

• the control panel through the hazard warning lamps and

central locking buttons,
• the radio through the ON/OFF button.

a - Waking up the BODY VAN

The COM 2000 can request that the network is woken up by

monitoring:

• the high frequency receiver (located in the COM 2000),

• the lighting stalk,
• the horn.

c - Waking up the BSI

The BSI is woken up by its direct inputs:

• unlocking of the driver's door,
• unlocking of the passenger's door,
• opening or closing of the front RH or LH door,
• opening or closing of the rear RH or LH door,
• opening or closing of the tailgate,
• pressing the tailgate opening button,
• pressing the int erior lamp button,
• change in ignition key position: input from +ACC or +IGN.

The BSI can be woken up by the COMFORT VAN and BODY VAN
by earthing the DATA B signal.

2 - Downgraded mode

In the event of a short circuit between DATA B and earth, the

information on DATA B is interpreted by the BSI as a request to
wake up the network.

After 6 non justified stand-by / wake-up cycle attempts, the BSI

forces the network to be set to stand-by.

The +VAN disappears and appears with the +IGNITION.

F - LOAD SHEDDING/LOAD ACQUIRING

1 - Load acquiring

Load acquiring consists of artificially increasing the vehicle's

electrical consumption to satisfy functional requirements, e.g.:
particle filter.
By increasing the resistive torque of the alternator, the engine
torque increases and so does the engine temperature.
Load acquiring means that the engine temperature rises more
quickly thus improving particle filter efficiency on diesel vehicles.
The BSI receives a load acquiring request from the engine ECU via
the CAN.
The BSI forces consumers to operate in the order shown in the
following table:

LOAD ACQUIRING
FUNCTION
LEVEL
1 Heater plugs
2 Fan engaged at mid speed
3 Fan engaged at slow speed
4 Heated rear screen activated

Note: During load acquiring, the driver is not supplied with any
information regarding consumer activation.

2 - Load shedding
Load shedding is only available in the alternator operational or engine
running state.
When the engine is running, a prolonged imbalance in the energy
balance leads to load shedding (temporary operating prohibition) of
certain large electrical consumers.
The load shedding strategy ensures a positive energy balance for the
battery, regardless of which consumers are operating.
Note: This operating mode is considered to be a downgraded mode.

G - VEHICLE CONFIGURATION: "CUSTOMER," "FACTORY", "PARK" AND

"SHOWROOM"

1 - Customer configuration

This is the operating mode used when the vehicle is delivered to the
customer.
This mode is configured using the diagnostic tool.

2 - Factory configuration

This configuration is only used whilst the vehicle is being

manufactured.
This configuration allows unit tests and a reduction in battery power
consumption.
Factory configuration reduces power consumption by forcing
economy mode.
Switching from factory mode to customer mode is performed by
configuration.

3 - "Park" configuration

This configuration is used when the vehicle is stored in the vehicle

park.

It involves preventing certain electrical power consumers, in

particular the BSI, from being permanently supplied thus limiting
power consumption to ensure the vehicle can be started.

The shunt supplying the consumers with a + permanent supply is

removed and a X amp fuse is fitted to supply the consumers when
the ignition is switched on.

"Park" mode allows access to the vehicle (door and boot locks
operational).

4 - Showroom configuration

This mode configures the vehicle when it is on display at an exhibition

or in a showroom.

In this mode, the vehicle is connected to an external power supply

and no ignition key is required.

Note: A special "showroom" harness must be fitted to ensure the

required functions can be operated without an ignition key.

This mode is used to obtain functions which are normally only

operational when the engine is running (air blower, air conditioning
display, etc).

Economy mode is deactivated and the vehicle can therefore operate

normally without being limited in time.

Showroom mode is like factory mode but without the time limitation.

Vehicle not moving operating phase

15 seconds after the ignition is switched off, the fuel level is

measured and saved.

The fuel level displayed on the control panel is also saved.

When the ignition is switched back on, the fuel level is measured
again.

If the value measured is different to the value saved the last time
the ignition was switched off, the BSI deduces that the fuel tank
has been filled and the new fuel level is used.

If both values are the same, the BSI takes the last value displayed
on the control panel.

Vehicle moving operating phase

The BSI determines the fuel level to be displayed as a function of:

• fuel flow, via the engine management ECU,

• the information from the fuel sender.

b - Specific case: low fuel warning

The low fuel level is determined by the BSI.

The BSI orders the COM 2000 to emit a warning sound.

The BSI orders the control panel to illuminate the low fuel LED.

Note: The total capacity of the fuel tank is 45 litres and the fuel
reserve is 6 litres.

transponder by generating an electrical signal for the transponder
1 aerial

The key transponder authentication request contains a random

number and the key identifier

3 The aerial transmits this electrical signal to the key transponder

The key transponder uses the random number and its identifier as a
variable to perform a calculation using an encrypting function in its
4 memory

The key transponder responds to the BSI by sending the result of this
authentication calculation which it has just performed

At the same time, the BSI performs a calculation using the same
5 encrypting function and using the same random number and identifier
of the key to be authenticated.

The results calculated by the key transponder and by the BSI are
6
compared

If the results are the same, the matching control sequence can begin

If the results are different, the BSI resends the key transponder
7 authentication request a maximum of 2 times.

At the 3rd attempt, the key transponder authentication request is

deactivated for 1 minute.

6 - Engine management ECU and BSI matching check

STEP DESCRIPTION

When the ignition is switched on, the engine management ECU sends a
1
random number to the BSI

Using an encrypting function, the random number and the BSI code as a
2 variable, the BSI calculates a number acting as a connection
authentication number

At the same time, the engine management ECU performs a calculation

3 using the same encrypting function and using the same random number
and the same BSI code as a variable

The BSI sends the engine management ECU the connection

4
authentication number which it has calculated

The engine management ECU compares the connection authentication

5
number which it has calculated with the one calculated by the BSI

If the numbers are the same, the engine management ECU is unlocked
6 If the numbers are the different, the engine management ECU remains
locked

Note: After 3 failed unlocking attempts, the starting sequence

is deactivated for one minute.

7 - Locking of the engine management ECU

A 6 second timer is started when the ignition is switched off.

The engine management ECU is locked at the end of the timer.

The engine cannot be started.

The engine management ECU is locked as soon as it is no longer

supplied electrically.

B - OPERATING PRINCIPLE

1 - Exterior lighting

a - Headlamp illumination

The COM 2000 acquires and filters the lighting stalk positions via
an internal connection and transmits them to the BSI.

The BSI illuminates the sidelamps and the corresponding LEDs

on the control panel and illuminates the on-board equipment.

The BSI orders the BM34 to illuminate the main and dipped
beam headlamps and keeps the sidelamps illuminated.

The BSI interprets the settings and checks the main beam
illumination conditions depending on whether the dipped beam
headlamps are on, the type of request (main beam or headlamp
flash) and the type of lens unit on the vehicle.

CITROËN C3 TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION

87
Section 4

The BSI orders the BM34 to illuminate the main beam

headlamps and:

• keeps the sidelamps and dipped beam headlamps on for dual

lens units.

• keeps the sidelamps on and extinguishes the dipped beam

headlamps for double filament bulbs.

The COM 2000 acquires, filters and transmits the fog lamp one-
touch controls to the BSI.

The BSI knows the status of the exterior lamps and checks the
conditions for illuminating the front and rear fog lamps. If the fog
lamps are requested and the headlamps are not already on, the
BSI switches on the sidelamps and the fog lamps.

The BSI orders the BM34 to illuminate the front fog lamps and
controls the rear fog lamps.

Note: When a trailer is attached to a vehicle with rear fog lamps, the
vehicle's rear lamps are cut off by a relay incorporated into
the towing harness.

b - Automatic headlamp illumination

The BSI transmits the vehicle speed and the auto mode
activation status to the dual rain/brightness sensor.

The BSI knows the context of the wiper system and vehicle's
electrical system.

The dual rain/brightness sensor acquires and processes the

brightness information and decides whether the headlamps need
to be switched on automatically. It transmits this decision to the
BSI.

Depending on this decision and the context, the BSI controls the
whole automatic headlamp illumination function.

c - Activating and deactivating automatic mode

The COM 2000 acquires the action on the lighting stalk. It

transmits this information to the BSI on the BODY VAN 1.

The BSI knows the electrical status of the vehicle. If the

conditions are satisfied, it controls the switch between automatic

CITROËN C3 TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION

88
Section 4

mode and manual mode. When set to stand-by, it stores the

status of the auto/manual mode.

The BSI signals the change in lighting mode by emitting an

audible signal.

CITROËN C3 TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION

89
Section 4

2 - Signalling

a - Indicators

The COM 2000 acquires and filters the lighting position via an
internal connection. It transmits the stalk status to the BSI.

The BSI controls the indicators directly (front, rear and LH and
RH side repeaters) until the COM 2000 provides the neutral
status from the indicator stalk.

The BSI controls the illumination of the indicators LED on the

control panel. The BSI flashes the LED (cyclic on/off control.)

The BSI orders the COM 2000 to activate the audible signal and
control its volume.

b - Blown bulb detection

The BSI checks that the indicators are operating correctly and
can detect at least one blown bulb per side.
If at least one blown bulb is detected per side, the BSI doubles
the flashing frequency. The flashing frequency must not be
doubled if a blown bulb is detected and if the hazard warning
lamps function is selected. Checks for blown bulbs occur every
time the indicators are used.
The BSI checks for blown bulbs by comparing the amount of
current actually used by the indicator outputs with a nominal
current limit which corresponds to a power of 47W (2*21W+5W).
One of the bulbs must be blown when the current consumed is
much less than the nominal current. The bulbs of the side
repeaters are not monitored as a power difference of just 5W
could not be detected accurately (line loss problems).

Note: When towing, as the BSI does not have "trailer presence"
information, it still performs the same diagnostic operation
described above on the same basis for the nominal current.
However, more current is consumed when a trailer is fitted to
the vehicle (and when no bulbs are blown). This is why, in this
situation, blown bulbs can only be detected when at least two
21W bulbs are blown.

CITROËN C3 TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION

90
Section 4

C- Hazard warning lamps

The automatic hazard warning lamp illumination function

improves safety by automatically signalling emergency braking.
The control panel acquires, filters and transmits the hazard
warning lamp button one-touch information to the BSI.
The BSI controls all the LH and RH indicators directly as a
function of the hazard warning lamps information and the
requests linked to door management and automatic hazard
warning lamp illumination.
The BSI controls the on/off cycles of the indicator LEDs on the
control panel.
The BSI orders the COM 2000 to activate the audible signal.
The BSI is responsible for synchronising the indicators, the LEDs
and the buzzer.
Downgraded mode:
If no acceleration information is available (fault on the CAN or
invalid value received), the automatic hazard warning lamp
illumination function is not allowed (no forced illumination).
In the event of a fault on the BODY VAN 1 (no impact information
available) or on the BODY VAN 2 (no request from the alarm
available), the automatic hazard warning lamp illumination
function is not allowed (no forced illumination).
In the event of a fault on the COMFORT VAN (hazard warning
lamps request information not available), the hazard warning
lamp illumination function caused by a driver request is not
allowed (no forced illumination). The function remains active in
the event of an impact and for locking/unlocking.
If invalid values are received from the COM 2000, the BSI does
not illuminate the indicators.

d - Reversing lamps and stop lamps

Reversing lamps:

When the driver selects reverse gear, the reverse gear switch on
the gearbox closes and supplies the reversing lamps directly
(reversing lamp on the vehicle and reversing lamps on the trailer).
The BSI acquires the Reverse Gear Information and broadcasts it
to the other ECUs which may need it (Parking assistance,
Telematics).

CITROËN C3 TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION

91
Section 4

Stop lamps:

When the driver presses the brake pedal, the main brake pedal
switch closes and supplies the stop lamps directly.
The BSI acquires the Stop information in order to monitor the
main brake pedal switch.
The redundant (or secondary) brake pedal switch is used for the
cruise control function.
Functions are valid in all operating modes depending on the
position of the ignition key.

Downgraded modes:

No downgraded mode.

e - Horn

The COM 2000 acquires and filters the horn on the steering
wheel activation information. It transmits this information to the
BSI.

The BSI transmits the horn command to the BM34.

The function is available in nominal mode regardless of the

ignition key position.

Downgraded modes:

Following a loss of communications between the COM 2000 and

the BSI on the BODY VAN 1, the BSI operates in the same way as
if a COM 2000 fault were present. The function is no longer
available. There is no specific downgraded mode for this function.

If communications are lost between the BSI and the BM34 on the
BODY VAN 1, the function is no longer available. There is no
specific downgraded mode for this function.

CITROËN C3 TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION

92
Section 4

C - AFTER SALES OPERATION

1 - Exterior lighting

BSI diagnostics

Only one of the sidelamps, dipped beam and main beam positions
may be selected at any one time. The BSI switches to downgraded
mode if it receives two or more positions on the lighting stalk: it
illuminates the dipped beam via the BM34 and forces the sidelamps
to illuminate.

The BSI reverts to nominal mode and updates the system status
when the fault disappears.

COM 2000 diagnostics

The COM 2000 detects jammed button faults on the fog lamp one-
touch controls.

An ECU fault leads to a loss of communications between the COM

2000 and the BSI.

For a loss of communications between the COM 2000 and the BSI or
if invalid values are sent:

The BSI activates automatic headlamp illumination mode if the

vehicle has this option.

The BSI orders the BM34 to switch off the dipped beam, main beam
and front fog lamps when the ignition is switched off if the vehicle
does not have the automatic headlamp illumination option. The BSI
forces the sidelamps and rear fog lamps to extinguish. When the
ignition is on and the engine is not running, the BSI orders the BM34
to switch off the dipped beam, main beam and front fog lamps. The
BSI forces the rear fog lamps to extinguish and the sidelamps to
illuminate. When the ignition is on and the engine is not running, the
BSI orders the BM34 to switch on the dipped beam and switch off
the main beam and front fog lamps. The BSI forces the rear fog
lamps to extinguish and the sidelamps to illuminate.

When communications are restored or when valid values are sent, the
BSI exits the downgraded mode described above. It controls the
dipped and main beam via the BM34 and operates the sidelamps
directly as a function of lighting stalk position. The front and rear fog
lamps remain off until requested again by the driver. The BSI
switches the control panel LEDs on or off accordingly.

CITROËN C3 TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION

93
Section 4

BM34 diagnostics

The BSI performs diagnostics on the outputs via the BODY VAN 1 by
reading the status of the outputs.

In the event of a BM34 fault (loss of +5V, I/O 16 fault), a watchdog

type device switches on the dipped beam headlamps or keeps them
switched on when the oil pressure warning information is not present.

If communications between the BSI and the BM34 are lost on the
BODY VAN 1, with the engine running, oil pressure warning absent
and ignition on, the BM34 illuminates the dipped beam headlamps
automatically until communications are restored or until the ignition
is switched off. The BM34 switches off the main beam headlamps
and front fog lamps.

Loss of the BM34 (loss of communications between the BSI and the
BM34):

• After detecting the loss of the BM34, the BSI forces the sidelamps
to illuminate and the rear fog lamps to extinguish when the ignition
is on. Otherwise, the BSI switches off all the lamps,
• The BSI controls the switching on or off of the control panel LEDs
depending on the status of the lamps.

BSI configuration:

• illumination of day running lamps,

• lens unit type (dual headlamp or double filament bulbs),
• presence of the Driving School module,
• front fog lamps option,
• automatic headlamp illumination option.

Note: The automatic headlamp illumination function must be

deactivated if the vehicle has day running lamps.

No configuration or configuration error

By default:

• illumination of day running lamps inactive,

• lens unit type: separate reflectors,
• no Driving School module,
• no front fog lamps option,

CITROËN C3 TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION

• no automatic headlamp illumination option.

CITROËN C3 TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION

95
Section 4

a - Automatic headlamp illumination

BSI diagnostics

In the event of a loss of frame or loss of the BODY VAN 2, the BSI
adopts a downgraded operation for the automatic lighting
function and switches on the dipped beam headlamps for as long
as auto mode is selected.

If the supply is lost and before the BSI is set to stand-by, there is
a risk that the status of the auto/manual mode might be lost.
The BSI sets the automatic headlamp illumination function
depending on the last status stored.

COM 2000 diagnostics

In the event of a fault on the auto/manual mode selection switch,

the BSI switches to automatic mode.

Dual rain/brightness sensor and signalling diagnostics

If the information required for determining the automatic lighting

command is missing, the dual rain/brightness sensor still sends
an automatic command but declares its uncertainty about the
command generated using a validity bit.

During a 3 second timer, the BSI applies the old automatic

command and ignores this new command and then if the validity
bit does not specify a valid command, the BSI adopts the
downgraded mode strategy described above (automatic
headlamp illumination for as long as automatic mode is
maintained).

BSI configuration:

• automatic headlamp illumination option,

• illumination of day running lamps,

• parameters for using the automatic headlamp illumination

function.

Special case: the automatic headlamp illumination function must

be deactivated if the vehicle has day running lamps.

a - Indicators

COM 2000 diagnostics

The COM 2000 detects jammed button faults on the indicator

one-touch controls and transmits an invalid value.

An ECU fault leads to a loss of communications between the

COM 2000 and the BSI. This acts in the same manner as when
incorrect lighting instructions are received.

b - Reversing lamps and stop lamps

BSI diagnostics

The BSI performs a functional diagnostic of the brake pedal

switch.

Note: When the BSI outputs are in open circuit (e.g.: all the bulbs
are blown), the BSI considers the stop information to be
present.

The BSI performs a software diagnostic of the reverse gear

information as a function of vehicle speed. If a fault is detected,
the reverse gear information is considered to be missing.

d - Windscreen wiper motor protection

If the windscreen wiper motor starts labouring, the BSI modifies

the control to the windscreen wiper motor via the engine relay
unit as follows:
Fast speed is reduced to slow speed when the windscreen wiper
motor falls below 25 rpm which corresponds to a period of 2.4
seconds between two park position signals.
Return to fast speed when the wiper motor speeds up to more
than 37 rpm, which corresponds to a period of 1.6 seconds
between two park position signals
The BSI protects the windscreen and rear screen wiper motors
against overheating if either jam regardless of the operating
mode requested by the user.
If the BSI does not receive the parked information after 7
seconds, it asks the engine relay unit to cut off the supply to the
wiper motors.

III - DE-ICING

A - OPERATING PRINCIPLE

1 - Manual heating/air conditioning

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

The control panel acquires the de-icing request from the heated rear screen switch

The control panel sends a de-icing request to the BSI

The BSI checks that the engine is running and that the electrical load shedding level is
compatible with the de-icing request

The BSI switches on the control panel de-icing LED.

The BSI switches on the heated rear screen.

The BSI controls a de-icing timer (12 minutes) at the end of which the BSI switches off
the heated rear screen.

The BSI switches off the control panel LED.

2 - Fully automatic climate control

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

The air conditioning ECU acquires the de-icing request from the heated rear screen
switch

The ECU sends a de-icing request to the BSI

The BSI returns the command to switch on the heated rear screen LED to the air
conditioning ECU

The BSI switches on the heated rear screen.

The BSI controls a de-icing timer (12 minutes) at the end of which the BSI switches off
the heated rear screen.

The BSI switches off the control panel LED.

3 - Forced activation
The de-icing function may be activated for particle filter regeneration
purposes.
Operating this function increases the resistant torque on the
alternator and therefore the torque supplied by the engine.
The increase in engine torque increases the engine's operating
temperature.
The increase in temperature encourages particle filter regeneration.
The driver is not informed when de-icing is activated under these
circumstances.
CITROËN C3 TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION
114
Section 4

4 - Electrical load shedding

Load shedding is controlled by the BSI.

The BSI determines 7 load shedding levels when the power consumed
by the vehicle's components is greater than the power supplied by
the alternator.

The load shedding level determines which electrical consumer or

functions are switched off.

Level 2 load shedding deactivates de-icing.

De-icing can only be deactivated if it has been operating for at least

6 minutes.

When the BSI sends a load shedding request, the de-icing function is
deactivated but the de-icing LED remains on and the operating
timer is subject to one of the following scenarios:

• if the load shedding request lasts for less than one minute, the de-
icing function is reactivated,

• if the load shedding request lasts for more than one minute, the
de-icing function is not reactivated and the de-icing LED is
switched off.

If the user switches the de-icing function back on whilst this function
is subject to load shedding, it is reactivated.

Subsequent load shedding is prohibited until the ignition is swit ched

off.

5 - Downgraded modes

a - Protection against excess voltage

If the user operates the de-icing function when the battery

voltage is greater than or equal to 15 volts, the BSI does not
switch on this function.

If the battery voltage is greater than or equal to 15 volts, the de-

icing function is switched off.

CITROËN C3 TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION

115
Section 4

Excess voltage occurring before the de-icing function has been

operating for 6 minutes

The BSI does not switch off the de-icing LED.

De-icing is reactivated under the following conditions:

• if the battery voltage falls back below 14.5 volts,

• and if the 12 minute timer has not finished.

Excess voltage occurring after the de-icing function has been

operating for 6 minutes

The BSI switches off the de-icing LED and the de-icing.

De-icing is not reactivated even if the battery voltage falls back

below 14.5 volts.

b - Disappearance of the engine running information

When the engine running information disappears, the de-icing

function is deactivated, the timer is suspended and the de-icing
LED is switched off.

• if the engine is restarted less than one minute after being

switched off: de-icing is reactivated through to the end of the
timer,
• if the engine is restarted more than one minute after being
switched off: de-icing is not reactivated.

B - AFTER SALES OPERATION

1 - Reading faults

No faults can be read regarding the de-icing function.

2 - Reading parameters

The following parameter can be read: rear screen plus exterior rear
view mirrors de-icing control.

3 - Actuator tests

The following actuator test can be performed: rear screen plus

c - Matching with the vehicle

To operate, the remote control must be matched with the

vehicle.

The encoded message sent to the receiver by each remote

control consists of the following codes:
• a fixed code linked to the key,
• a scrolling code matched with the vehicle's receiver,
• a code corresponding to the action to be performed,
• a code corresponding to the battery charge status.

d - Resynchronising the remote control

The scrolling code of the remote control is modified every time

the remote control is used.

An offset between the scrolling code expected by the receiver

and the code transmitted by the remote control is allowed (this
occurs when the remote control is used out of the range of the
receiver).

If the tolerance is exceeded, the remote control must be

resynchronised.

The tolerance is an offset of 255.

The following operations must be performed to resynchronise the

remote control:

7 - Volumetric protection
Volumetric protection detects intrusions into the passenger
compartment by analysing the movement or change in air volume
using ultrasonic volumetric sensors.
Volumetric protection is active 45 seconds after the alarm is armed.

a - Triggering: volumetric protection

The ultrasonic volumetric sensors detect all significant variations
in air volume in the passenger compartment.

Note: The alarm unit does not trigger the siren for variations in air
volume in the passenger compartment caused by
temperature variations.

b - Deactivation: volumetric protection

Voluntary deactivation

Volumetric protection can be voluntarily deactivated after

switching off the ignition by pressing the volumetric alarm switch
for more than 1 second.

Volumetric protection will be deactivated if the alarm is armed

DRIVING ASSISTANCE

I- PARKING ASSISTANCE

A - OPERATING PRINCIPLE

1 - Introduction
When performing a reversing manoeuvre, parking assistance informs
the driver of the presence and distance of the nearest obstacle using
a modulated audible signal.
Parking assistance detects an obstacle if the speed between the
obstacle and the vehicle is less than 3.6 kph.
The parking assistance switch is used to:
• activate parking assistance without engaging reverse gear,
• deactivate parking assistance temporarily,
• deactivate parking assistance until the next time the ignition is
switched off.

3 - Operating principle

Parking assistance uses the ultrasound emitted by the sensors. If an

obstacle is present, the ultrasound rebounds off the obstacle.

The parking assistance ECU receives signals from the sensors and
then calculates the time between transmission and reception.

The ECU can then calculate the distance and position of the
obstacle.

The parking assistance ECU modulates an electrical signal

representing the distance and sends it to the rear buzzer.

III - ELECTRIC POWER STEERING

A - OPERATING PRINCIPLE

1 - Introduction
Unlike a hydraulic power steering mechanism, the power is used only
when required (when the driver moves the steering wheel).
Less power is therefore used compared to hydraulic power steering.
There is no direct interaction with the vehicle's engine as the electric
power steering system takes current from the alternator (when the
engine is running).

2 - Operating principle
Electric power steering assists turning forces when the steering
wheel is moved.
The assistance torque is provided by an electric motor. This torque
is transmitted to the rack pinion by a reduction gear (wheel + worm
screw with a ratio of 1:15). It is added to the torque applied by the
driver.
The force exerted by the driver on the steering wheel is transmitted
mechanically to the rack via the pinion. The driver's torque is
measured by a sensor and is sent to the power steering ECU.

4 - Torque sensor
The torque sensor is fitted to the pinion shaft between the input
shaft (column and steering wheel side) and the output side (rack
pinion side).
It permanently measures the torque applied to the steering wheel by
the driver.
The torque sensor determines:
• the direction of steering wheel rotation,
• the torque exerted by the driver.
Note: An electronic stage incorporated into the ECU prevents an
assistance torque being supplied in the opposite direction to the
direction of steering wheel rotation and prevents any assistance
from being provided when the steering wheel is not moved.
This steering system does not use a steering wheel angle sensor.

The torque sensor consists of 3 parts:

• The mechanical part consisting of a torsion bar, similar to the
torsion bars used on normal hydraulic valves. The angular
deflection between the input shaft and the output shaft is
proportional to the torque applied by the driver. A "screwdriver
mechanism" limits this angular deflection to +/- 4.5°,
• the electromagnetic part of the sensor provides information about
the angular position of the detection rings (reference 7 in relation
to reference 6) and consequently of the input shaft in relation to
the output shaft,
• the electronic part of the sensor converts this angular position
information into torque information using the principle that the
angular distortion is proportional to the steering wheel torque.
The torque sensor has a second detection stage: a reference coil, the
characteristics of which do not change due to the angular movement
of the detection rings.
This is used to transmit electrical reference information regardless
of the surrounding conditions (e.g. temperature).

5 - Assistance motor
a- Motor type
The electric motor is a direct current brush motor.
There are two types of electric motor with different power levels:
60 A (for small vehicles) and 65 A (for larger vehicles).
Two condit ions must be satisfied for the motor to operate:
• battery voltage greater than 9 volts,
• engine speed greater than 285 rpm.

b - Motor thermal protection

The ECU limits the assistance progressively (reduction in
maximum current) if the steering is used for a long period
(movement from lock to lock several times in succession) to
prevent the assistance motor from overheating which may
damage the motor or the ECU.
The current level is restored progressively as the system cools
down.

3 - Electronic stability program (ESP)

ESP assists the driver by acting on the brakes and engine torque to
correct the vehicle's trajectory.
• To return the drive to the front wheels, the ESP ECU adjusts the
engine torque.
• To encourage the vehicle to follow the required trajectory, the ESP
ECU brakes one of the wheels so as to create a rotational torque
around this wheel. When understeering, the ESP ECU brakes one
of the rear wheels. When oversteering, the ESP ECU brakes one of
the front wheels.

d Trajectory with ESP

e Trajectory required by the driver

The function consists of three operations:

• calculation of the trajectory required by the driver,
• calculation of the actual trajectory,
• correction of the trajectory (within the physical limits).
An ESP steering wheel angle sensor informs the ESP ECU of the
trajectory requested by the driver.
An accelerometer and a gyroscope inform the ESP ECU of the
vehicle's actual trajectory.
The ESP ECU calculates the difference between the two trajectories.
Depending on this difference and the active laws which it has in its
memory, the ESP ECU determines the action to be implemented to
bring the actual trajectory more in line with the trajectory requested
by the driver.

4 - Activation / Deactivation

The ASR and ESP functions can be partially deactivated by the driver
by pressing the ESP deactivation switch if the following conditions
are satisfied:
• the system is not in regulation mode,
• the vehicle speed is below 30 kph.

The LED illuminates on the control panel when the ESP function is
switched off.

Partial deactivation deactivates engine regulation and braking

regulation if two wheels are slipping.

Partial deactivation does not deactivate engine regulation and

braking regulation if only one wheel is slipping.

Partial deactivation can be used when driving on snow or on low

adherence ground.

The ASR and ESP functions are automatically reactivated when the
vehicle speed exceeds 30 kph.

The handbrake switch information is used to deactivate ESP.

5 - Calculation of the kinematic information

a - Calculation of the vehicle speed

The vehicle speed is calculated from the average speed of the

drive wheels.

b - Calculation of the distance

The distance is calculated from the information obtained from

the rear ABS sensors.

c - Calculation of the longitudinal acceleration

The longitudinal acceleration is calculated from the rear ABS

sensors.

6 - Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

The ABS function prevents the front and rear wheels from locking up
during braking.

The directional stability and steerability of the vehicle are thus

maintained.

The braking distance is optimised.

The system controls the braking pressure applied to the brake

calipers and controls each wheel independently to prevent them
from locking up.

7 - Braking Anti-Slip Regulation (BASR)

The braking anti-slip regulation function (BASR) prevents the drive
wheels from slipping.
When a wheel starts to slip, the ABS ECU brakes this wheel.
This braking allows the engine torque to be transferred to the other
wheel.
The directional stability, drive and steerability of the vehicle are thus
maintained.

9 - Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR)

The anti-slip regulation function (ASR) prevents the drive wheels from
slipping.

When a wheel starts to slip, the ABS ECU brakes this wheel.

This braking transmits the engine torque to the wheel, which then
does not slip.

When both wheels slip, the ABS ECU brakes both wheels and reduces
the engine torque.

For petrol engines, the ABS ECU adjusts the motorised throttle and
the injection advance.

For diesel injections, the ABS ECU adjusts the injection duration.

The directional stability, drive and steerability of the vehicle are thus
maintained.

B - AFTER SALES OPERATIONS

1 - Different wheel circumference

The ESP ECU identifies wheels which have a circumference 5%

different to the other wheels.

The ECU must then correct the information it supplies.

ABS and EBD regulation operations must remain fully operational up

to a difference in wheel circumference of 12%.

For differences greater than 12%, the system switches to

downgraded mode.

2 - ESP steering wheel angle sensor

The ESP steering wheel angle sensor has to be calibrated in the

following cases:
• following repairs to the front suspension,
• following repairs to the steering column,
• after replacing the steering wheel angle sensor,
• after working on the COM 2000.

Note: An incorrectly calibrated sensor leads to poor ESP operation.

c - Automatic lighting

The interior lighting can be deactivated in two ways:

• by pressing the interior lamp switch when a door is open.
• by pressing the interior lamp switch when the key is detected
as being absent.

The automatic interior lighting function can only be activated if

the vehicle speed is less than 5 kph.

d - Door open warning

The driver is warned of an open door by the interior lamp flashing

at a frequency of 1 Hz under the following conditions:
• when the vehicle speed exceeds 5 kph and if a door is already
open,
• if a door is opened and the vehicle speed is above 5 kph.

The interior lamp will stop flashing when all the doors are closed
or when the engine is switched off.

Note: Customer illumination requests have priority over this

illumination mode.

Configuration

after the tailgate has been open continuously for 10 minutes.

The boot lighting does not illuminate nor extinguish progressively.

CITROËN C3 TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION

186
Section 7

3 - Map readers

The map reading lamps are switched on and off manually and this is
only possible when the ignition is on.
The map reading lamps do not illuminate nor extinguish
progressively.

4 - Vanity mirror

The vanity mirror lighting will only operate under the following
conditions:
• Accessories position,
• Ignition on (engine not running),
• the engine is running.
Under these conditions, the lamp will come on automatically when
the vanity mirror cover is opened and will switch off when it is closed.
The vanity mirror lamps do not illuminate nor extinguish
progressively.

5 - Interior control button lighting

Depending on the exterior lighting request status, the BSI controls

the sidelamps directly. All control buttons are illuminated at night at
the same time as the sidelamps, with the exception of the following
control buttons.
The control buttons on the air conditioning panel for CH and RF
versions, except the de-icing button on petrol engines, are supplied in
parallel with the sidelamps. Those on the air conditioning panel for
the RFTA version are supplied by the air conditioning ECU.
The alarm control button is illuminated by a direct connection
between the BSI and the control button on the specific BSI
connector (alarm connector). This is operated at the same time as
the sidelamps.
The radio, split screen, telematic and CD changer control buttons
are supplied by their respective ECUs.
The electric window, door mirror and sunroof control buttons are
illuminated depending on function authorisation, independently to the
position of the sidelamps.
The hazard warning lamps, de-icing (CH and RF petrol versions) and
central locking buttons are illuminated by the control panel as a
function of the "Day/Night Status" information.

CITROËN C3 TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION

187
Section 7

6 - Adjusting the brightness of the interior equipment lighting

The control panel acquires the status of the light ing button and
determines the required lighting level.
It transmits the required lighting level information or Black Panel
information to the BSI.
The BSI knows the status of the sidelamps and determines the
Day/Night status (4 lighting levels for day and 4 levels plus Black
Panel for night).
The BSI broadcasts the information on the COMFORT VAN to
illuminate and/or adjust the lighting of the control panel, radio panel,
split screen, telematics and air conditioning control panels.
As a function of this information, the control panel, radio, split
screen, telematics, CD changer and air conditioning ECU alter the
brightness level of the various components on their panels.
Note: The control panel is responsible for lighting the hazard warning
lamps, de-icing, CH and RF petrol and central locking control
buttons.

a - Diagnostics
There are no diagnostics specific to this function.

b - Downgraded modes:
If communications are lost between the BSI and the control
panel, the brightness level is transmitted to the BSI using the last
valid value stored.
If the lighting rheostat develops a fault, the BSI uses maximum
lighting for the controls by default.
7 - Diagnostics
No faults can be recorded.

B - OPERATING PRINCIPLE

1 - Air conditioning compressor management

The air conditioning compressor is operated by the BSI which takes

the following criteria into account:
• the request to engage the air conditioning compressor; AC/ON,
• the evaporator icing up safety function,
• the air conditioning circuit pressure,
• the engine speed,
• the dialogue with the engine management ECU, AC/TH and
AC/OUT,
• management of the OFF times.

a - Request to engage the air conditioning compressor: AC/ON

Petrol RF manual air conditioning

This definition applies to the petrol RF application only.

The AC/ON request is handled via a wire connection between the

air conditioning control panel and the main control panel.

The control is of bistable type and is maintained for as long as

the user request is valid.

The control panel then transmits the request to the compressor

control ECU via the COMFORT VAN.

HDi RF manual air conditioning

This definition applies to the HDi RF application only.

The AC/ON request is transmitted from the air conditioning

control panel to the compressor control ECU via the COMFORT
VAN.

RFTA automatic climate control

This definition applies to the RFTA application only.

The AC/ON request is transmitted from the air conditioning

control panel to the compressor control ECU via the COMFORT
VAN.

inverts the action implemented the previous time the button was
pressed (change of edge = change of status).

The status of the AC/ON switch and its LED will be stored when
the ignition is switched off.

Downgraded mode

When there are no communications on the VAN:

• - the function LED is switched off,
• - the function associated to the control is not performed.

2 - Air conditioning compressor cut -off due to engine speed

When the engine speed reaches 6250 rpm, the BSI prevents the
compressor from engaging to ensure that its rotational speed is not
too excessive.

a - Air conditioning compressor re-engaging safety function

The compressor is only authorised to engage after being cut off
due to engine speed if a pressure condition is also satisfied.
Case N° 1: the pressure when the engine speed safety function
appears is less than or equal to 20 bars
The air conditioning compressor is authorised to re-engage if the
engine speed falls below 5650 rpm and if the pressure is less
than 24 Bars.
Case N° 2: the pressure when the engine speed safety function
appears is between 20 and 24 bars
The air conditioning compressor is authorised to re-engage if the
engine speed falls below 5650 rpm and if the pressure is less
than 24 bars.
The cut off times are given in the "definition of OFF times"
section.
The difference between the 2 cases listed above relates only to
the duration of the associated Off time.

Note: The air conditioning compressor will not re-engage if the

pressure is more than 24 bars absolute.

b - Downgraded mode

There is no downgraded mode in the BSI.

3 - Air conditioning evaporator icing up safety function

To prevent the air conditioning evaporator from icing up, the BSI
prevents the air conditioning compressor from engaging under
certain temperature condit ions (RF and RFTA versions.)
The evaporator icing-up safety function is managed by the BSI.
The evaporator icing up safety function corresponds to the
thermostat function which defines air conditioning compressor cut -
off and engaging rules as a function of evaporator temperature and
external temperature.
The various limits can be configured depending on application and
temperature measuring conditions:
• evaporator temperature sensor: metal sensor, blown air, etc,
• external temperature sensor: air inlet location, rear view mirror,
etc.

a - Thermostat function law

The basic thermostat function law only takes into account the
evaporator temperature criterion and its shape is defined below:

e - Downgraded mode and diagnostics

1) If the evaporator temperature sensor is faulty (invalid value),
the compressor is not authorised to engage
2) If the external temperature sensor is faulty (invalid value), the
compressor cut -off function only depends on the evaporator
temperature with a specific minimum limit and the same
compressor re-engaging hysteresis.
The BSI detects open circuits (OC) and short circuits (SC) on the
evaporator sensor output.
Note: Outside the temperature range -40°C to +85°C, the
BSI considers the evaporator sensor to be faulty and
adopts the relevant downgraded mode (compressor
prevented from engaging).

4 - Air conditioning circuit pressure safety device

The air conditioning pressure safety function is performed by the BSI.
The high and low pressure safety function status is transmitted to
the BSI by a pressostat.
The pressostat measures the pressure in the air conditioning circuit.
The information is acquired on a wire connection by the engine
management ECU.
The engine management ECU provides the BSI with the following
information on the CAN:
• compressor cut -off safety status. The compressor is cut off if
there is a risk of overheating
• refrigerant circuit pressure, approximately 0 - 40 bars.
The BSI transmits the information to the air conditioning ECU on the
COMFORT VAN.
a - Diagnostics
The engine management ECU detects open circuits and detects
values outside the range of the air conditioning pressure signal
analogue value.
b - High pressure safety
The high pressure cut off limits and the re-engaging limits linked
to an engine speed condition are:
• cut off limit above 27 bars absolute,
• re-engaging limit: Pressure less than or equal to 20 bars
absolute and engine speed less than 5650 rpm.

CITROËN C3 TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION

212
Section 7

c - Low pressure safety

The low pressure cut off limits and the re-engaging limits linked
to an engine speed condition are:
• cut off limit below 2.5 bars absolute,
• re-engaging limit: Pressure more than or equal to 3 bars
absolute and engine speed less than 6250 rpm.

d - Downgraded mode

If the pressure sensor develops a fault, the compressor is

prohibited from engaging.

5 - Management of OFF times

The safety functions implemented within the BSI are linked to

compressor "OFF" times.

The aim is to allow the compressor to "recover" mechanically. The

compressor OFF times linked to these various safety functions are
not cumulative.

a - Definition of OFF times

3RD CUT -OFF AND

SAFETY FUNCTION 1S T CUT -OFF 2ND CUT -OFF
ABOVE
Evaporator 5 sec 5 sec 5 sec

High pressure 5 sec 1 min 4 min

Low pressure 5 sec 5 sec 5 sec

Engine speed - Case N°1 5 sec 5 sec 5 sec

Engine speed - Case N°2 5 sec 1 min 4 min

The compressor OFF time is reset when the engine running

information disappears or at the end of a 16 minute compressor
OFF or ON time.
When several safety functions are active, the OFF time used is
the one relating to the first safety function
At the end of the OFF time, the compressor will only be re-
engaged if no other safety functions are present.
The OFF time between the compressor being cut off and re-
engaged is a minimum of 5 seconds in all cases.

6 - AC/TH and AC/OUT dialogue

Exchanges between the BSI and the engine management ECU take
place on the CAN.
a - AC/TH information
AC/TH: Request to engage the compressor. Information
produced by the BSI to be sent to the engine management ECU
b - AC/OUT information
AC/OUT: instruction to engage the compressor. Information
produced by the engine management ECU to be sent to the BSI
Compressor not authorised (AC/OUT = 0) or request to engage
compressor authorised (AC/OUT = 1.)
When a request (or a response) to cut off the compressor comes
from the engine management ECU (AC/OUT = 0), the BSI
performs an operating cycle to ensure that the compressor is
cut off for at least 5 seconds.

c - Operating principle
The BSI only sends an AC/TH request to the engine management
ECU if all the following conditions are satisfied:
• AC/ON request,
• engine running,
• de-icing safety function,
• pressure safety function,
• engine speed safety function.
• compressor OFF time
• The BSI waits for the AC/OUT response to engage the
compressor.
• When a condition is no longer satisfied, the BSI requests
authorisation to cut off the compressor using AC/TH.
• The BSI waits for the AC/OUT response from the engine
management ECU to cut off the compressor. If the request
remains unanswered, the BSI forces the compressor to be cut
off after 2 seconds.
d - Air conditioning compressor control
The compressor clutch is controlled by the BSI. The control
output should operate a load with a maximum current of 5 A, a
resistance of around 3 Ohms and an inductance of around 9 mH.
e - Diagnostics
The BSI detects open circuits and short circuits to earth on the
compressor control output.

7 - Additional heating

a - Air conditioning heating resistors (PTC)

The heating resistors are designed to improve the temperature
rise in the passenger compartment. They are located in the
heating air circuit.
The additional heating request is managed by the BSI.
The heating resistors are operated by the engine management
ECU.
Managing the heating resistors request
The BSI sends the request for additional heating as a function of
the following information:
• coolant temperature,
• external temperature (external rear view mirror),
• request to engage the PTCs (from the air conditioning control
panel).

Note: The heating resistor activation information from the air

conditioning ECU is:
- maximum hot position = 1 for HDi CH and RF
- PTC activation = 1 for RFTA.
If one of these conditions is not satisfied, the request for
additional heating cannot be sent.

Note: The disappearance of the heating resistor authorisation, and

therefore the loss of the maximum hot position (HDi CH and
RF) or the heating resistors activation information (RFTA)
must not cause these heating resistors to be cut off. The cut-
off strategy depends on the external temperature and coolant
temperature parameters.
If all conditions are satisfied, the BSI sends its request to the
engine management ECU via the CAN.
The BSI sends the following information to the engine
management ECU via the CAN:
Additional heating resistors control
• Not active
• Resistor 1 active
• Resistor 2 active
• Resistors 1 and 2 active

Authorisation to activate the PTC resistors by the RF and RFTA

air conditioning ECU
Basic versions (CH and RF VAN)
The authorisation to activate the heating resistors is controlled
by the Maximum Hot position being selected on the air
conditioning control panel (Max hot position = authorisation to
activate resistors).
Detection of the maximum hot position is transmitted from the
air conditioning control panel to the heating resistor electronics
via the VAN.
Automatic versions (RFTA)
The authorisation to activate the heating resistors is controlled
by the ECU depending on the heat requirements of the
passenger compartment.
It is transmitted from the air conditioning control panel to the
heating resistor electronics via the COMFORT VAN.

Operation of the heating resistors

To maintain driving pleasure and so as not to overload the
electrical network, the heating resistors are activated in stages of
1/3, 2/3 and 3/3 of total power with a 20 second delay between
2 successive stages when activating or deactivating the resistors.

Operating rules
When the engine running information appears, the BSI starts a
20s timer.
The timer must have finished before a heating resistor request is
taken into account.

The supply to PTC1 and PTC2 is cut off immediately when the
engine running information disappears.

Air recirculatio n motor management

The air recirculation motor is controlled depending on 3 statuses:
• no movement,
• movement towards the recycling position,
• movement towards the external air position.

The air recirculation motor will travel through its maximum

stroke in 20 seconds.
If the ignition is switched off whilst the motor is moving, the
motor supply will be maintained until its final position is reached.

9 - Partial air recirculation for multiplexed CH and RF versions

For HDi engines, the thermal deficit when cold must be
compensated for on this type of engine. This lack of heat is
compensated for by partial recycling. This function consists of
moving the recirculation flap, transparently as far as the user is
concerned, to the open, closed or partially closed position depending
on the position of the distribution and mixing controls and the blower
motor speed.
a - Recycling flap management
The BSI manages the air recycling flap motor depending on
whether the maximum hot position is detected, blower speed
(which must be ≠ 0) and the non detection of the de-icing
distribution position.
Note: Pressing the recirculation button takes priority over partial
recirculation.

3 - Front airbags

The front airbags are in addition to the seat belts and are designed
to operate in the event of a large frontal impact.

Their role is to come between the vehicle's front occupant(s) and the
dashboard to cushion their forwards movement during a large frontal
impact thus limiting injuries to the head and chest.

The airbags are not fired for a small frontal impact, during a rear
impact nor if the car overturns as they would serve no purpose.

4 - Side airbags

The side airbags are designed to operate in the event of a large side
impact on the side at which the impact occurs.

The side airbags are not designed to fire for a minor side impact or
collision, during a rear or frontal collision nor if the car overturns as
they would serve no purpose.

a - Thorax type airbags

The role of the thorax side airbags is to come between the driver
or front passenger and the door panel in the area of the thorax.

Thorax side airbags are incorporated into the outer side part of
the driver's and front passenger's seats.

b - Curtain side airbags

The role of the curtain airbags is to come between the front and
rear occupants and the side windows.

They are used to limit head injuries.

Curtain airbags are fitted in the roof lining on both sides of the
vehicle

Note: During a very severe side impact, the front airbags may be
triggered.

5 - Seat belts with pyrotechnic pretensioners and force limiter

The pretensioners are designed to tension the front seat belts so as

to hold the body of the occupants firmly against the seat, thus
increasing their effectiveness.
The seat belts are tensioned by means of a pyrotechnic cartridge.
In the event of a slight impact, only the seat belts with pyrotechnic
pretensioner may be triggered.
The force limit operates after the pretensioner and reduces the
pressure exerted by the seat belt on the occupants' chest.

6 - Side sensors

The side sensors measure the lateral acceleration and transmit this
information to the airbag ECU.
There is one side sensor on each side of the vehicle.
The sensors and airbag ECU communicate via 2 wires in a twisted
pair.
These two wires also provide the power supply for the sensors.
The sensors send:
• the deceleration information to the airbag ECU.
• presence information which detects a connection fault between
the sensors and the airbag ECU.
When the ignition is switched on, the side sensors are fully
operational within 4 seconds.
Each sensor performs an auto-diagnostic within 500 ms and sends
presence information and their calibration reference to the airbag
ECU.

7 - Passenger's airbag deactivation

The passenger's airbag can be deactivated by means of a switch (4).

(Photo shows location for LH drive)

Deactivating the airbag allows a rear facing child's seat to be fitted.
The passenger's airbag deactivation LED informs the driver of its
operating status

B - OPERATING PRINCIPLE

1 - Airbag ECU

The airbag ECU has acceleration sensors internally and externally

(side sensors).

The airbag ECU analyses the signals it receives.

It performs calculations to determine the acceleration and direction

of the impact.

The airbag ECU decides to trigger or not to trigger the pyrotechnic

components to which it is connected.

The main functions of the airbag ECU are:

For direct occupant protection:

• to detect frontal, side and rear impacts,

• to selectively trigger pretensioners and front and side airbags

For system surveillance:

• to diagnose and store the system's configuration,

• to perform auto-diagnostics of all system components,

• to store detected faults,

• to store the impact conditions which led to the pyrotechnic

components being triggered.

For driver's information:

• to provide system fault information

• to provide passenger's airbag deactivation information

For its own operation:

• to store the power required to fire the airbag igniters in case the
power supply is cut off at the time of impact

The airbag ECU receives two power supplies:

• +ignition on

• + BODY VAN

CITROËN C3 TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION

236
Section 7

2 - Impact detection
The electronic accelerometer located in the ECU detects frontal
impacts and rear impacts.
A safety sensor prevents the igniters from firing if a fault occurs on
the electronic accelerometer and / or on the airbag ECU.
The two side airbag triggering sensors permanently measure the
lateral deceleration and transmit this information to the Airbag ECU.
The two side airbag sensors are operational within 4 seconds after
the key is turned to the ignition on position.

3 - Triggering the airbags

a - Principle
The accelerometer measures vehicle deceleration: when the
deceleration reference value is exceeded, an explosive disc starts
the combustion of the additional charge and then of the solid
fuel. This fuel is converted into a gas (nitrogen) and inflates the
airbags.
The airbags deflate after a few milliseconds.
b - Airbag triggering conditions.
Airbags can only be triggered when the ignition is on.
When the ignition is switched off, the igniters are deactivated
after one minute (even in the event of an impact).
c - Triggering of the front airbags
During a very severe frontal impact, the airbag ECU triggers the
front airbags.
d - Triggering of the side airbags (curtain and thorax)
Upon receiving the lateral deceleration information from the
sensors, the airbag ECU gives the order to trigger the side and
curtain airbags
e - Triggering of the seat belts with pyrotechnic pretensioners
The seat belts with pyrotechnic pretensioners trigger every time
the airbags are triggered.
In the event of a slight impact, only the seat belts with
pyrotechnic pretensioner may be triggered.

If a fault occurs on the passenger's airbag deactivation switch:

• the passenger's airbags are deactivated,
• the BSI illuminates the "airbag fault" and "passenger's airbag
deactivated" LEDs on the control panel,
• a fault is stored in the airbag ECU.

5 - Additional function
In the event of an impact, the airbag ECU sends triggering
information about one or more pyrotechnic components to the BSI.
This information is contained within a frame.
The BSI uses this frame to:
• unlock the doors
• switch on the hazard warning lamps automatically
• cut off the fuel pump

9 - Downgraded modes

a - Downgraded mode 1: Minor fault without airbag deactivation

One or more fault codes are recorded.

A response to the question from the BSI is sent in a fault

notification frame on the VAN.

All pyrotechnic components can still be triggered if required.

b - Downgraded mode 2: Fault with selective deactivation of faulty

pyrotechnic components:

Faulty pyrotechnic component is deactivated.

One or more fault codes are recorded.

A response to the question from the BSI is sent in a fault

notification frame on the VAN.

All non faulty pyrotechnic components can still be triggered if

required.

c - Downgraded mode 3: Deactivation of all pyrotechnic components

All safety components are deactivated.

A response to the question from the BSI is sent in a fault

notification frame on the VAN.

d - Downgraded mode 4: Locked mode after airbags (front or side)

have been triggered

An accident message is saved if the front or side airbags are

triggered.

The pretensioners may operate on their own or slightly before the

other components. In this case, the "accident" message is saved
but can be erased and replaced by the information about the
triggering of the other pyrotechnic components.

243
Section 7

e - Fault on the COMFORT VAN

It is no longer possible to transmit the passenger's airbag

deactivation information.

The control panel illuminates the airbag and passenger's airbag

deactivation LEDs.

The airbag ECU is informed of the fault by the BSI and

deactivates the passenger's airbag.

f - Fault on the BODY VAN 1

The airbag ECU deactivates the passenger's airbags.

g - Fault on the connection between the side sensors and the airbag
ECU

The airbag ECU deactivates the side airbags.

The airbag ECU informs the BSI of the fault and the BSI
illuminates the airbag fault LED on the control panel.

10 - After sales operation

a - Replacement of pyrotechnic systems

The pyrotechnic systems must be replaced every ten years from

the date of first registration and this must only be performed by
the network.

After one or more airbags have been triggered, the fired

component and the airbag ECU must be replaced.

The airbag ECU does not need to be replaced following a minor

impact during which only the seat belts with pyrotechnic
pretensioners were triggered.

Warning: Wait at least 1 minute for all the airbag firing lines to
be deactivated before working on the airbag system.
