When the VAN is on stand-by, the two buses (DATA and DATA B) are not
operational.
Each ECU monitors external events which cause the network to return to
a fully operational state.
When a wake-up event is detected, the ECU in question draws current
from DATA B.
This power consumption is detected by the BSI.
The BSI controls a relay which switches the +VAN supply for all VAN
ECUs (bodywork and comfort).
The BSI detects that power is being consumed and controls the relay
supplying all the ECUs on the VAN (COMFORT and BODYWORK)
through a supply known as +VAN.
The control panel and non RT3 radio can request that the
COMFORT VAN is woken up:
The BSI can be woken up by the COMFORT VAN and BODY VAN
by earthing the DATA B signal.

When the engine is running, a prolonged imbalance in the energy
balance leads to load shedding (temporary operating prohibition) of
certain large electrical consumers.
The load shedding strategy ensures a positive energy balance for the
battery, regardless of which consumers are operating.

When the ignition is switched back on, the fuel level is measured
again.
If the value measured is different to the value saved the last time
the ignition was switched off, the BSI deduces that the fuel tank
has been filled and the new fuel level is used.
If both values are the same, the BSI takes the last value displayed
on the control panel.
The BSI orders the control panel to illuminate the low fuel LED.

STEP DESCRIPTION
STEP DESCRIPTION
The key transponder uses the random number and its identifier as a
variable to perform a calculation using an encrypting function in its
4 memory
The key transponder responds to the BSI by sending the result of this
authentication calculation which it has just performed
At the same time, the BSI performs a calculation using the same
5 encrypting function and using the same random number and identifier
of the key to be authenticated.
The results calculated by the key transponder and by the BSI are
6
compared
If the results are the same, the matching control sequence can begin
If the results are different, the BSI resends the key transponder
7 authentication request a maximum of 2 times.
STEP DESCRIPTION
When the ignition is switched on, the engine management ECU sends a
1
random number to the BSI
Using an encrypting function, the random number and the BSI code as a
2 variable, the BSI calculates a number acting as a connection
authentication number
If the numbers are the same, the engine management ECU is unlocked
6 If the numbers are the different, the engine management ECU remains
locked
2 - Key programming
The key identifier must be stored in the BSI to allow the vehicle to be
started.
All keys must be reprogrammed when storing a new key in the BSI.

B - OPERATING PRINCIPLE
1 - Exterior lighting
a - Headlamp illumination
The COM 2000 acquires and filters the lighting stalk positions via
an internal connection and transmits them to the BSI.
The BSI orders the BM34 to illuminate the main and dipped
beam headlamps and keeps the sidelamps illuminated.
The BSI interprets the settings and checks the main beam
illumination conditions depending on whether the dipped beam
headlamps are on, the type of request (main beam or headlamp
flash) and the type of lens unit on the vehicle.
The COM 2000 acquires, filters and transmits the fog lamp one-
touch controls to the BSI.
The BSI knows the status of the exterior lamps and checks the
conditions for illuminating the front and rear fog lamps. If the fog
lamps are requested and the headlamps are not already on, the
BSI switches on the sidelamps and the fog lamps.
The BSI orders the BM34 to illuminate the front fog lamps and
controls the rear fog lamps.
Note: When a trailer is attached to a vehicle with rear fog lamps, the
vehicle's rear lamps are cut off by a relay incorporated into
the towing harness.
The BSI transmits the vehicle speed and the auto mode
activation status to the dual rain/brightness sensor.
The BSI knows the context of the wiper system and vehicle's
electrical system.
Depending on this decision and the context, the BSI controls the
whole automatic headlamp illumination function.
2 - Signalling
a - Indicators
The COM 2000 acquires and filters the lighting position via an
internal connection. It transmits the stalk status to the BSI.
The BSI controls the indicators directly (front, rear and LH and
RH side repeaters) until the COM 2000 provides the neutral
status from the indicator stalk.
The BSI orders the COM 2000 to activate the audible signal and
control its volume.
The BSI checks that the indicators are operating correctly and
can detect at least one blown bulb per side.
If at least one blown bulb is detected per side, the BSI doubles
the flashing frequency. The flashing frequency must not be
doubled if a blown bulb is detected and if the hazard warning
lamps function is selected. Checks for blown bulbs occur every
time the indicators are used.
The BSI checks for blown bulbs by comparing the amount of
current actually used by the indicator outputs with a nominal
current limit which corresponds to a power of 47W (2*21W+5W).
One of the bulbs must be blown when the current consumed is
much less than the nominal current. The bulbs of the side
repeaters are not monitored as a power difference of just 5W
could not be detected accurately (line loss problems).
Note: When towing, as the BSI does not have "trailer presence"
information, it still performs the same diagnostic operation
described above on the same basis for the nominal current.
However, more current is consumed when a trailer is fitted to
the vehicle (and when no bulbs are blown). This is why, in this
situation, blown bulbs can only be detected when at least two
21W bulbs are blown.
Reversing lamps:
When the driver selects reverse gear, the reverse gear switch on
the gearbox closes and supplies the reversing lamps directly
(reversing lamp on the vehicle and reversing lamps on the trailer).
The BSI acquires the Reverse Gear Information and broadcasts it
to the other ECUs which may need it (Parking assistance,
Telematics).
Stop lamps:
When the driver presses the brake pedal, the main brake pedal
switch closes and supplies the stop lamps directly.
The BSI acquires the Stop information in order to monitor the
main brake pedal switch.
The redundant (or secondary) brake pedal switch is used for the
cruise control function.
Functions are valid in all operating modes depending on the
position of the ignition key.
Downgraded modes:
No downgraded mode.
e - Horn
The COM 2000 acquires and filters the horn on the steering
wheel activation information. It transmits this information to the
BSI.
Downgraded modes:
If communications are lost between the BSI and the BM34 on the
BODY VAN 1, the function is no longer available. There is no
specific downgraded mode for this function.
1 - Exterior lighting
BSI diagnostics
Only one of the sidelamps, dipped beam and main beam positions
may be selected at any one time. The BSI switches to downgraded
mode if it receives two or more positions on the lighting stalk: it
illuminates the dipped beam via the BM34 and forces the sidelamps
to illuminate.
The BSI reverts to nominal mode and updates the system status
when the fault disappears.
The COM 2000 detects jammed button faults on the fog lamp one-
touch controls.
For a loss of communications between the COM 2000 and the BSI or
if invalid values are sent:
The BSI orders the BM34 to switch off the dipped beam, main beam
and front fog lamps when the ignition is switched off if the vehicle
does not have the automatic headlamp illumination option. The BSI
forces the sidelamps and rear fog lamps to extinguish. When the
ignition is on and the engine is not running, the BSI orders the BM34
to switch off the dipped beam, main beam and front fog lamps. The
BSI forces the rear fog lamps to extinguish and the sidelamps to
illuminate. When the ignition is on and the engine is not running, the
BSI orders the BM34 to switch on the dipped beam and switch off
the main beam and front fog lamps. The BSI forces the rear fog
lamps to extinguish and the sidelamps to illuminate.
When communications are restored or when valid values are sent, the
BSI exits the downgraded mode described above. It controls the
dipped and main beam via the BM34 and operates the sidelamps
directly as a function of lighting stalk position. The front and rear fog
lamps remain off until requested again by the driver. The BSI
switches the control panel LEDs on or off accordingly.
BM34 diagnostics
The BSI performs diagnostics on the outputs via the BODY VAN 1 by
reading the status of the outputs.
If communications between the BSI and the BM34 are lost on the
BODY VAN 1, with the engine running, oil pressure warning absent
and ignition on, the BM34 illuminates the dipped beam headlamps
automatically until communications are restored or until the ignition
is switched off. The BM34 switches off the main beam headlamps
and front fog lamps.
Loss of the BM34 (loss of communications between the BSI and the
BM34):
• After detecting the loss of the BM34, the BSI forces the sidelamps
to illuminate and the rear fog lamps to extinguish when the ignition
is on. Otherwise, the BSI switches off all the lamps,
• The BSI controls the switching on or off of the control panel LEDs
depending on the status of the lamps.
BSI configuration:
By default:
BSI diagnostics
In the event of a loss of frame or loss of the BODY VAN 2, the BSI
adopts a downgraded operation for the automatic lighting
function and switches on the dipped beam headlamps for as long
as auto mode is selected.
If the supply is lost and before the BSI is set to stand-by, there is
a risk that the status of the auto/manual mode might be lost.
The BSI sets the automatic headlamp illumination function
depending on the last status stored.

3 - Forced activation
The de-icing function may be activated for particle filter regeneration
purposes.
Operating this function increases the resistant torque on the
alternator and therefore the torque supplied by the engine.
The increase in engine torque increases the engine's operating
temperature.
The increase in temperature encourages particle filter regeneration.
The driver is not informed when de-icing is activated under these
circumstances.
CITROËN C3 TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION

Section 4
The BSI determines 7 load shedding levels when the power consumed
by the vehicle's components is greater than the power supplied by
the alternator.
When the BSI sends a load shedding request, the de-icing function is
deactivated but the de-icing LED remains on and the operating
timer is subject to one of the following scenarios:
• if the load shedding request lasts for less than one minute, the de-
icing function is reactivated,
• if the load shedding request lasts for more than one minute, the
de-icing function is not reactivated and the de-icing LED is
switched off.
If the user switches the de-icing function back on whilst this function
is subject to load shedding, it is reactivated.

A - OPERATING PRINCIPLE
1 - Introduction
When performing a reversing manoeuvre, parking assistance informs
the driver of the presence and distance of the nearest obstacle using
a modulated audible signal.
Parking assistance detects an obstacle if the speed between the
obstacle and the vehicle is less than 3.6 kph.
The parking assistance switch is used to:
• activate parking assistance without engaging reverse gear,
• deactivate parking assistance temporarily,
• deactivate parking assistance until the next time the ignition is
switched off.

A - OPERATING PRINCIPLE
1 - Presentation
The overspeed control function warns the driver using an audible
signal via the switch module at the steering wheel when the cruising
speed set by the driver or pre-programmed into the BSI is exceeded.
The limit can be programmed in two ways:
• limit programmable by the driver,
• limit pre-programmed into the BSI using the diagnostic tool (fixed
limit).
When the function is activated, the cruising speed used is the last
one stored.
Pressing and holding the button stores the vehicle's current speed as
the cruising speed.

A - OPERATING PRINCIPLE
1 - Introduction
Unlike a hydraulic power steering mechanism, the power is used only
when required (when the driver moves the steering wheel).
Less power is therefore used compared to hydraulic power steering.
There is no direct interaction with the vehicle's engine as the electric
power steering system takes current from the alternator (when the
engine is running).
2 - Operating principle
Electric power steering assists turning forces when the steering
wheel is moved.
The assistance torque is provided by an electric motor. This torque
is transmitted to the rack pinion by a reduction gear (wheel + worm
screw with a ratio of 1:15). It is added to the torque applied by the
driver.
The force exerted by the driver on the steering wheel is transmitted
mechanically to the rack via the pinion. The driver's torque is
measured by a sensor and is sent to the power steering ECU.

The torque sensor is fitted to the pinion shaft between the input
shaft (column and steering wheel side) and the output side (rack
pinion side).
It permanently measures the torque applied to the steering wheel by
the driver.
The torque sensor determines:
• the direction of steering wheel rotation,
• the torque exerted by the driver.
Note: An electronic stage incorporated into the ECU prevents an
assistance torque being supplied in the opposite direction to the
direction of steering wheel rotation and prevents any assistance
from being provided when the steering wheel is not moved.
This steering system does not use a steering wheel angle sensor.

This braking transmits the engine torque to the wheel, which then
does not slip.
When both wheels slip, the ABS ECU brakes both wheels and reduces
the engine torque.
For petrol engines, the ABS ECU adjusts the motorised throttle and
the injection advance.
For diesel injections, the ABS ECU adjusts the injection duration.
The directional stability, drive and steerability of the vehicle are thus
maintained.
3 - Reading faults
4 - Reading parameters:
The following parameters can be read with the diagnostic tool:
a - Vehicle with ABS
• Rear LH wheel speed.
• Rear RH wheel speed.
• Front LH wheel speed.
• Front RH wheel speed.
• Vehicle speed.
• Supply voltage.
• Brake lamps switch
• Brake pad wear
• Brake fluid level.
• Relay status.
6 - Configuration
A fault appears when an ECU has never been configured.
A non configured ECU does however work but in this instance
operates in downgraded mode.
The ECU does not have to be reconfigured if the software is modified.
The following details are automatically modified in the ECU during
configuration:
• configuration location,
• signature of the configuration tool,
• configuration number.

II - AIR CONDITIONIN G
A - PRESENTATION
1 - Introduction
The temperature, air flow and air distribution are all adjusted
manually by the user.
The lighting, blower motor and heated rear screen are all
controlled by wire within the control panel.
The control panel controls the AC/ON LED and transmits the
instruction: request to engage the compressor.
The BSI:
• manages and operates the compressor,
• manages and operates the heated rear screen,
The BSI:
• manages the operation of the 3 position recycling motor,
• manages the operation of the recycling, heated rear screen
and AC/ON LEDs,
• manages the compressor function,
• manages the heated rear screen.
Note: When the system is initialised (switched on for the 1st time,
reconnecting the battery, etc), the following situation will be
active:
controls in the off status (heated rear screen, AC/ON and
recycling),
associated LEDs will be off
b - Fully automatic climate control
Note: The control panel also incorporates the heated rear screen
control which is totally separate to the other air conditioning
functions.
The BSI:
• provides the VAN connection with the control panel,
• manages the heated rear screen,
• operates the heated rear screen and gives the LED control
order,
• performs all the safety functions linked to compressor
operation, in conjunction with the engine management ECU,
• operates the compressor,
• manages and operates the heating resistors with the engine
management ECU.

c - Operating principle
The BSI only sends an AC/TH request to the engine management
ECU if all the following conditions are satisfied:
• AC/ON request,
• engine running,
• de-icing safety function,
• pressure safety function,
• engine speed safety function.
• compressor OFF time
• The BSI waits for the AC/OUT response to engage the
compressor.
• When a condition is no longer satisfied, the BSI requests
authorisation to cut off the compressor using AC/TH.
• The BSI waits for the AC/OUT response from the engine
management ECU to cut off the compressor. If the request
remains unanswered, the BSI forces the compressor to be cut
off after 2 seconds.
d - Air conditioning compressor control
The compressor clutch is controlled by the BSI. The control
output should operate a load with a maximum current of 5 A, a
resistance of around 3 Ohms and an inductance of around 9 mH.
e - Diagnostics
The BSI detects open circuits and short circuits to earth on the
compressor control output.

III - AIRBAGS
A - PRESENTATION
Side airbags 2
2 - Airbag ECU
The airbag ECU is responsible for triggering the seat belts with
pyrotechnic pretensioners and the airbags.
The airbag ECU is located between the two front seats.
1: airbag ECU
3 - Front airbags
The front airbags are in addition to the seat belts and are designed
to operate in the event of a large frontal impact.
Their role is to come between the vehicle's front occupant(s) and the
dashboard to cushion their forwards movement during a large frontal
impact thus limiting injuries to the head and chest.
The airbags are not fired for a small frontal impact, during a rear
impact nor if the car overturns as they would serve no purpose.
4 - Side airbags
The side airbags are designed to operate in the event of a large side
impact on the side at which the impact occurs.
The side airbags are not designed to fire for a minor side impact or
collision, during a rear or frontal collision nor if the car overturns as
they would serve no purpose.
The role of the thorax side airbags is to come between the driver
or front passenger and the door panel in the area of the thorax.
Thorax side airbags are incorporated into the outer side part of
the driver's and front passenger's seats.
The role of the curtain airbags is to come between the front and
rear occupants and the side windows.
Curtain airbags are fitted in the roof lining on both sides of the
vehicle
Note: During a very severe side impact, the front airbags may be
triggered.
2 3
6 - Side sensors
The side sensors measure the lateral acceleration and transmit this
information to the airbag ECU.
There is one side sensor on each side of the vehicle.
The sensors and airbag ECU communicate via 2 wires in a twisted
pair.
These two wires also provide the power supply for the sensors.
The sensors send:
• the deceleration information to the airbag ECU.
• presence information which detects a connection fault between
the sensors and the airbag ECU.
When the ignition is switched on, the side sensors are fully
operational within 4 seconds.
Each sensor performs an auto-diagnostic within 500 ms and sends
presence information and their calibration reference to the airbag
ECU.

2 - Impact detection
The electronic accelerometer located in the ECU detects frontal
impacts and rear impacts.
A safety sensor prevents the igniters from firing if a fault occurs on
the electronic accelerometer and / or on the airbag ECU.
The two side airbag triggering sensors permanently measure the
lateral deceleration and transmit this information to the Airbag ECU.
The two side airbag sensors are operational within 4 seconds after
the key is turned to the ignition on position.
