Envi Sci Final Act2
If I were the mayor, I would probably choose to solve the problem of garbage collection
and disposal by maximizing and investing in the use of our modern-day technologies to
have a fast and time-saving collection of garbage. Since we are already in a world where
we rely on our technologies, I would rather invest in Smart Waste Management
Technologies, which is a system that uses technology to make trash collection more
efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly. I would also like to invest on a
certain innovative technology called, "Smart Waste Bins", which can help us to reduce
improper recycling sorting. This uses artificial intelligence-based object recognition to
automatically sort recyclables into separate compartments, avoiding people from fully
directing their garbage to landfills. We can separate the recyclable items here so that we
can still re-use them, which can help to lessen garbage being thrown out elsewhere.
After sorting, the machine compresses the waste, and then trash will be placed
separately. Smart waste bins take human error out of the initial sorting process, making
material processing faster and easier for recycling facilities. This is a technology that can
help people who are not knowledgeable in terms of segregating garbage. I will also
invest in machinery that would help me convert these trashes into fertilizers, energies,
or any form of biomass, so that we can maximize these trashes instead of putting them
in landfills and letting them degrade on their own.
On the other hand, as a mayor, I would also like to strictly implement an ordinance
where each and every house would have their own garbage bins, such as green garbage
(recyclable items), red garbage (plastics), black garbage (food waste), and yellow
garbage (cans or metals). Afterwards, there will be a proper collection of these garbages
according to their own dates; for example, on Mondays, only green garbages are going
to be collected, and on the next day, the red garbages, and so on. If they do not follow
the segregation proccesses, there will be a community service for them to comply with,
this is also for their own good, in this way I can let them become educated in terms of
this matter. This will not only help people recover some of the recyclable items and
make money out of it, but also prevent any adverse effects of these trashes on other
people’s health. These garbages would be collected twice a week to lessen the
accumulation of infections or diseases in my area.
2. Examine your trash bin/can (with contents) at home. With your knowledge
in garbage segregation, identify the problems you might encounter in performing
waste segregation at home and how can you prevent these problems?
As I examine our trash bin at home, I see lots of wastes in one bin. Where all of it,
whether it is plastic, paper, cans, metal, used napkins and diapers, food scraps, etc., is
all placed in one garbage bag. To be honest, some of the people at home find it hard to
understand the processes of segregation; they became too lazy to separate items
accordingly and would rather just put them immediately inside the trash bin, regardless
if they were wet or dry garbage, thus causing cross-contamination. There is also an
instance where they already knew that there is a separate garbage for each waste, but
still ended up on putting on the same trash bin. But as a result of this ignorance, our
earth and environment becomes degraded, and a lot of waste is disposed of in landfills.
We can prevent these problems by providing colored trash bins and putting labels
on them so that people who don’t have enough knowledge of segregation can also
comply with this matter. I would also place different garbage bins for wet and dry items,
and when it comes to dry waste collection, there will be another bag or bin for it; this is
for the paper and plastics. Though separating plastic waste from biodegradable waste is
crucial, Natural waste and plastic trash need to be completely separated. Unlike
biodegradable waste, plastic waste does not decompose. Instead, they take a long time
to degrade, and even then, they are deadly. I will also teach and educate them on how
to properly segregate and what the benefits will be once we participate in segregating
garbage. We should also let them know that all of the wet waste should be taken out of
the home daily so that there will be no accumulation of hazardous components that
could possibly affect our health. We can also minimize the use of disposable items and
promote the use of recyclable materials at home. Lastly, they should also be aware of
the differences between biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste so that we can
help lessen the trash that would end up in landfills and the risk of having a disease once
it has accumulated.
Let us always keep in mind that it is important to have proper waste segregation,
which will not only reduce the impact it has on the environment but also the health
issues that can arise from waste and toxins that have been improperly disposed of. This
will also help to protect other citizens from biohazards and physical harm, nurture
community health, promote sanitation, and provide opportunities to earn money from
recycling.
