g. Presentation of the Lesson

“Class, today, we will discuss the

Measures of Position. Measures of
Position has two types of data: the
Ungrouped Data and Grouped Data.
But for today’s lesson we will focus
on Measures of Position of Quartiles
for Ungrouped Data.”

“In this topic you are expected to

illustrate the quartiles for ungrouped
data, calculate the first quartile, second
quartile and third quartile of a set of
data and appreciate the importance of
quartile in real life situations.”

B. Developmental Activity
a. Activity
(The teacher will grouped the students
into four groups, and will tell them to
follow the directions and do it as fast
as they can.)

"Before you start your activity, what

do you think is the key to finish your
work successfully?"

Two groups of students obtained the

following scores in their Statistics
quiz:
Group A
8, 2, 5, 4, 8, 5, 7, 1, 3, 6, 9

Group B
11, 2, 4, 16, 10, 5, 6, 5, 14, 9, 12
"Sir, cooperation and accuracy."
First, arrange the scores in ascending
order:

Middle Quartile is also the _ _ _ _ _ _.

Observe how the lower quartile (Q1),

middle quartile (Q2), and upper
quartile (Q3) of the scores are
obtained. Complete the statements
below:
The first quartiles 3 and 5 are obtained
by ___________________. (observe
the position of 3 from 1 to 5 and
position of 5 from 2 to 6)
Middle Quartile is also the median.
The second quartiles 5 and 9 are
obtained by _________________.

“How can you get the second quartile
of ungrouped data?” (A representative of each group will present
their work.)
“After finding the second quartile,
how can you find the first quartile?”

“Ascending or increasing order, Sir.”

“How about the third quartile?”

“It is used to find the middle score.”

“Student B, what is your

understanding about the word
quartile? It comes from what word?”

“What do you mean by quart?”

“What about ungrouped data? What is

your understanding about the phrase
ungrouped data, Student C?"

“Ungrouped data are those data which

are not yet organized or arranged into
frequency distribution.”

“So, let’s have an interactive

discussion about the quartile for “Quart, Sir.”
ungrouped data.”
“It means four, Sir.”
The quartiles are the score points
which divide a distribution into four
equal parts. “I think ungrouped data means scattered data,
Sir.”

a. 25% of the data has a value ≤ Q1

b. 50% of the data has a value ≤ X or
Q2
c. 75% of the data has a value ≤ Q3

“Q1 is called the lower quartile or the

first quartile and Q3 is the upper
quartile or the third quartile.
Q1<Q2<Q3, where Q2 is nothing but
the median. “

"How are you going to determine the

lower, middle and the upper Quartile
of a given set of data?"

"We have so called Mendelhall and

Sincich Method."

"It is a method of finding the quartile

value of a given set of data."

"First we have to calculate the lower

quartile or the first quartile of a set of
data. We will use this formula."

Lower Quartile (L) = Position of Q1

1
= (n+1)

where n represents the total number
of elements of terms.
 If L falls halfway between two
integers, round up. The Lth
element is the lower quartile
value (Q1).

"What about calculating the position

of the upper quartile or the third
quartile? What do you think will be
the formula, Student D?"

Upper Quartile (U) = Position of Q3

3
= (n+1)

where n represents the total number
of elements of terms.
 If U falls halfway between two
integers, round down. The Uth
element is the upper quartile "Since ¼ is the coefficient in the formula in

"For example, we have the set of data.

"What do you think is the first step,

Student E?"

{1, 3, 7 , 7, 16, 21, 27, 30, 31}

"What is next, Student F?"

"What is the value of n?"

"The value of our n is 9. To find Q1,

"Since, our lower quartile falls
halfway between two integers, will we
round it up or round down?"

"Yes, since our lower quartile falls

halfway between two integers, we will
round it up. Hence, it is equal to 3."

"The lower quartile value (Q1) is the

3rd data element, so Q1 = 7."
"Sir, we must round up for it is lower

"After finding the lower quartile, what
is the next step?"

"Yes, what formula we will use?"

which is 9."

"How are you going to simplify and
get the answer, Student G?"

"Any questions? Clarification?"

"Again, class, how can you describe or

illustrate quartiles?
