Primary/Secondary injection test on Main Switchboard & Emergency Switchboard
1. Safety Precautions
1a. Incoming Power Supply to be isolated by others and PTW to test group.
1b. Ensure circuit breakers or MSB under test is electrically dead and safe to work.
1c Take down particulars of the switchboard & protection relay,CT (Ratio , Class & VA) and circuit breaker data.
1d. Check to ensure all connection on the protection system wiring correct and tightened.

2. P.I Test on CT ratio & Ammeter

2a. Check polarity and ratio of the protection CTs and wirings.
2b. Check Ammeter indications.
2c. The wiring and operation of the protection system are correct.
2d. The sensitivity and stability of the protection relay are verified. PI test relay for O/C & E/F.

3. Procedure
3a. PI test circuit is set up between L1 phase and Neutral.
3b. Set all O/C relays setting to 110% of the CT ratio.
3c. Primary current is injected between L1 & N phases by slowly raising the current value to 50% and 100% of the
rate primary current of the CT’s under test.NOTE/* Tester can test 50% , if the CT ratio are 4000A an above.
3d. L1 phase current , checked using Ammeter to confirm that the CT ratio is in order. Then the spill current is noted
and recorded. The spill current should not more than 50mA if the polarities are correct at 100% inject current.
3e. For primary current will reduce to required value amp , the over-current setting dial of the over-current relay
which has been set to 110% is slowly rotate anti-clockwise until the O/C relay operate and trip the circuit
breaker under test at desire setting.
3f. Repeat step (3c/3d.) for L2 & N , L3 & N phases.
3g. Press the ON button to inject current to the circuit and at the same time start the timer to take note of the tripping
time after the circuit breaker is trip.
3h. As the tripping time at 0.5sec max for incoming s or 0.3 sec is for outgoing as required.
the time delay can be set by adjusting the time delay setting dial ,
and reconfirm the time delay by repeating the above until the required time is recorded on the counter.

4 Direct acting test at primary injection

4a. Direct acting test setup.
4b. Set all direct acting element to require setting.
4c. Primary injection current is injected direct onto the L1 line terminal and L1 load terminal of the circuit breaker.
4d. Repeat for L2 & L3 phases.
4e. Record all the results in the PI check list.
4f. Recommended Direct acting trip element can be set as follows. (Required by Power Grid )
4fa. 400A and below max of 6 time approval load value.
4fb. >400A to 1500A max D/A setting 3200A
4fc. >1500A to 2250A max D/A setting 4500A To show the direct
4fd >2250A to 6000A max D/A setting have to consult by the building consultant acting trip settings for
incoming.
5. O/C and E/F relay operation test by Secondary Injection
The purpose of SI test on IDMTL relay are:
5a. To check whether the relay working to standard.
5b. To ensure current and time setting whether the tolerance
relay operation comply within the claimed limit of tolerance. +-10%
To include contact To include insulation
resistance test for the resistance test and
main busbar dielectric strength test.

6 Over-Current relay test

6a. The SI current set up.
6b. Set current plug setting L1,L2,L3 phases relay to 5A (100%)
and time multiply ™ to 0.1 TMS setting.
6c. To raise the secondary current until the display OC relay 100% .
Now take down the vaule as starting current of that relay.
6d. Now inject current of 10A (200%) of plug setting.
The maintain the current at this value by leaving the handle of
the SI set at this position and off the supply.
6e. Connect the time lead across the relay normally open (NO)
contact , re-energize the supply until the time stop ,
and record the time value.
6f. Repeat step (6c. & 6d.) for 15A(300%) and 25A(500%).
6g. Confirm the starting current once again at required plug setting
and the 200% timing at the required TM(time Multiply).
6h. Repeat the process for all the remaining phases.
6i. Record all results in SI form.

7. Earth Fault relay test

The DTL Earth Fault relay is tested in a similar manner as on top testing procedure but
a current plug setting is max. 1A(20%) of the CT ratio or max. of 120A .
(primary current) and time is at 0.5sec max for incoming s or 0.3 sec is for outgoing as required.

8. Main Earth System

8a. Test main earthing system with earth tester to ensure earth
value not more than 1 ohm.
8b. Earth Fault relay setting dependent on value of main value.
8C Notice : More than 2MVA Tranfromer ,Building contractor test it ownself.
