Recover a boot image on a CX4 series storage system reimg040_R006..........3
Service Note 1 - The Utility Partition Fails to Boot................................................................................19
1. This document describes the procedures to recover the boot image for a storage processor on a Done
CX4- series storage system.
This procedure is necessary if it is determined that an SP is in an unbootable state, either rebooting
continuously or unable to boot the embedded operating system from the mirrored pair of boot drives
either in slots 0/2 or slots 1/3. CLARiiON TS2 should be involved in both the decision to use this
procedure and the execution of this procedure.
Note: Please reference emc290547 before starting the reimaging procedure. This primus
references the issue where in pool LUNs might go offline after single storage processor
reimage.
2. Definitions:
Primary boot disk: The lesser numbered disk in the mirrored boot pair for a particular SP.
For SP A, disk 0_0_0, for SP B disk 0_0_1.
Secondary boot disk: The greater numbered disk in the mirror pair for a particular SP. For
SP A, disk 0_0_2, for SP B disk 0_0_3.
Utility Partition: Software loaded to previously unused, but reserved space on the first 4
drives of a CX series storage system that provides menus/utilities to perform recovery and
conversion.
Image Repository: A previously reserved but un-used space on drive 0_4 (5th drive) in the
boot chassis that holds Recovery Images that are NDU’d to the storage system or added via
the FTP. A change has been made to CX3 and CX4 storage systems so that the Image
Repository is also mirrored on drives 0_0_0 and 0_0_1.

storage systems:
3. Recovery Procedure:
a. Connect a serial cable from a Windows server/desktop/laptop. The cable connects from a
Comm port on the computer to the serial port on SPA.
9600 baud
8-bit
No parity
1 stop-bit
No flow control
This log will be needed for Triage if an issue occurs that requires escalation.
WARNING: Any errors reported from POST at this point must be resolved prior to
continuing the conversion process.
NOTE: Do not use ESC to interrupt POST because this terminates POST before the
self-tests are run, and some of these self-tests are critical for a successful boot.

b) Following the printout of the text Contact your Service Representative, type the characters
“recover” (case-sensitive) followed by Enter on your keyboard. The Utility Partition will begin
to boot.
a) If the Utility Partition image needs this first-time processing, it will stop after the POST testing
is done to prepare for MiniSetup. It is not necessary to manually interrupt POST with
CTRL-C again.

b) When these MiniSetup reboots have already been done in this SP, the boot proceeds directly
to the banner for starting the Utility Partition. If this happens, skip down in the procedure
where the Utility Partition startup is shown. Typically, in the case of conversions, however, the
Utility Partition image has just been loaded and must have a MiniSetup reboot. An exception
to this is when the Utility Partition reboot is retried again for some reason.
Look for the WARNING: POST has been instructed to stop the boot sequence
message.
You may also see messages like INFORMATION: I/O Card 1 Power Up disabled. This
applies to any I/O Cards present slots other than slot 0. Power up is disabled on these
cards during this special MiniSetup process, but the slot 0 card remains powered.

d) At this point type the Key sequence “recover” to request a boot to the Utility Partition again.
(Note: the “recover” key sequence can be used any time after stopping in POST to request a
direct Utility Partition boot. It bypasses the Diagnostic Menu and the DDBS Service Sub-
Menu to go directly to a Utility Partition boot.

c) Again the user types “recover” to initiate the final boot to the Utility Partition.
NOTE: Be patient, there will be a pause of up to 15 minutes at this point. See Service Note 1, Utility
Partition Fails to Boot” if the Utility Partition does not boot successfully..

Checking Image Repository..........
NOTE: If it is not seen during your reimage, there is no need for concern. This message may only be
seen during a conversion.
After the Advertising to the Gateway is done, the Utility Partition should respond to ping at this IP
address.
16. On the CLARiiON Utility Toolkit Main Menu screen, perform the applicable step below:
You use the LAN Port to FTP a file from the Windows laptop or server to the array to re-image the
boot drives with a previous software version.
NOTE: Even though the Utility partition says you are enabling the LAN Service port, you are really
enabling the LAN Management port. Therefore you need connectivity to the customers LAN port.
There should already be a LAN cable plugged in most cases.
If the View LAN Service Port Settings option appears on the CLARiiON Utility Toolkit Main Menu
screen, then the LAN Service Port is already enabled. Select this option and press Enter.

Automatically enable the LAN port with these settings in the future? y/n [n]
c. Answer N when prompted to save the LAN Port settings for future use. The IP address may
be changing. If you know it will remain the same, then you can answer y for yes.
17. From the main menu, select 10) Install Images to recover OS. The Select Images to Install screen
will appear.
If the proper Recovery Image is listed, select it to be installed. This will bring you to the Confirm
Image Installation screen. Be sure to select an image appropriate for the current release of Base
Software on the working SP.
NOTE: If the proper Recovery Image is listed, skip the next step.
If the proper Recovery Image is NOT listed, press the enter key to return to the Install Images to
Recover OS menu and proceed to the next step.
NOTE: If you happen to have incompatible images in your repository you may see the following
screenshot:
The warning message screen warns you that you must install the proper Recovery Image or
Conversion Image for the Flare release version currently running on the storage system and storage
system model type e.g. CX4-120, CX4-240, CX4-480 or CX4-960.
a. Place the CLARiiON CX4 Base Software .mif file you are installing in a directory on the
server/desktop/laptop that has LAN connectivity to SPA.
b. Open a browser or an FTP client on the same server/desktop/laptop and connect to the
LAN Port of SPA, using the Management LAN Port IP Address.
c. When the FTP connection is established, a login window appears. Enter the username
clariion and the password clariion! and click Login.
If the above login fails, enter the username clariion1992 and the password
clariion1992 and click Login.
NOTE: If you encounter an “ access denied” error when logging on to the SP FTP server,
Follow the emc122393 primus article.
d. Locate the .mif version of Base Software you intend to install. Open a Windows Explorer
window and drag/drop the .mif image to the ftp window previously opened.
When the file has been copied to this window, it is in a temporary memory called “RAM
disk”.
e. Leave the above FTP browser window open and return to the HyperTerminal window
f. From the main menu, select 10) Install Images to recover OS. The Select Images to
Install screen will appear to verify the image was uploaded successfully and select it to
be installed.
IMPORTANT! If you choose to re-image both SPs, the other SP you are not currently connected to
via the serial cable MUST be removed from its slot before continuing.
20. The image will begin to copy to the boot drives of the target SP.
22. Press Enter to continue. This will bring you back to the CLARiiON Utility Toolkit Main Menu.
Select 3) Reset Storage Processor. The SP boots from the image just loaded. It will always reboot
at least one more time to retrieve the real code from the PSM. When the storage processor has
completed its reboot, the Fault LED on the air dam of the SP should be off and the storage processor
will be manageable via Navisphere.
NOTE: If both SPs were re-imaged, when the first SP is completely booted and accessible through
Navisphere Manager it is then safe to insert the second SP. The second SP will go through the same
multiple reboot process as the first SP did.

Service Note 1 - The Utility Partition Fails to Boot
The Utility Partition may fail to boot with one of the following symptoms:
A second attempt to boot the Utility Partition usually succeeds. Simply break into POST when the
SP reboots and retry the steps to boot the Utility Partition a couple of times. If multiple attempts
fail, then escalate to CLARiiON Technical Support.
2. A series of messages are displayed on the screen as the Utility Partition boots which look
similar to int13 - GET DRIVE PARAMETERS (Extended) (xxxx). The xxxx value increases as
the boot progresses. The last message displayed is typically 13xx. That value varies
depending on timing and the platform type. If the messages stop and no output appears for
more than 15 minutes or if the SP resets and reruns POST, then do the following:
