 Recover a boot image on a CX4 series storage system reimg040_R006

1. This document describes the procedures to recover the boot image for a storage processor on a  Done
CX4- series storage system.

This procedure is necessary if it is determined that an SP is in an unbootable state, either rebooting
continuously or unable to boot the embedded operating system from the mirrored pair of boot drives
either in slots 0/2 or slots 1/3. CLARiiON TS2 should be involved in both the decision to use this
procedure and the execution of this procedure.

Note: Please reference emc290547 before starting the reimaging procedure. This primus
references the issue where in pool LUNs might go offline after single storage processor
reimage.

2. Definitions:

 Primary boot disk: The lesser numbered disk in the mirrored boot pair for a particular SP.
For SP A, disk 0_0_0, for SP B disk 0_0_1.

 Secondary boot disk: The greater numbered disk in the mirror pair for a particular SP. For
SP A, disk 0_0_2, for SP B disk 0_0_3.

 Utility Partition: Software loaded to previously unused, but reserved space on the first 4
drives of a CX series storage system that provides menus/utilities to perform recovery and
conversion.

The Utility Boot partition for SPA is on drives 1&3

The Utility Boot partition for SPB is on drives 0&2

 Image Repository: A previously reserved but un-used space on drive 0_4 (5th drive) in the
boot chassis that holds Recovery Images that are NDU’d to the storage system or added via
the FTP. A change has been made to CX3 and CX4 storage systems so that the Image
Repository is also mirrored on drives 0_0_0 and 0_0_1.

Locations of Core Boot Partitions, Utility Partitions, and Image Repository on CX3 series
storage systems:

3. Recovery Procedure:

a. Connect a serial cable from a Windows server/desktop/laptop. The cable connects from a
Comm port on the computer to the serial port on SPA.

EMC CONFIDENTIAL version: 6.0.0.26

3 of 21
EMC ® CLARiiON ™ SolVe Generator
Solution for Validating your engagement

The Comm Port on the computer should be set to:

 9600 baud
 8-bit
 No parity
 1 stop-bit
 No flow control

Set other properties as shown

b. Open a hyper-terminal session with the port characteristics described above.

4. Start HyperTerminal Logging (Mandatory)

£
Turn on HyperTerminal logging of the entire conversion process. This is done with the Transfer and
Capture Text… menus of HyperTerminal.

 This log will be needed for Triage if an issue occurs that requires escalation.

5. Insert or reboot the Storage Processor requiring a reimage:

£
Insert or reboot the storage processor that needs to be re-imaged. If the SP is currently installed, use
Navisphere Manager and right-click on the icon of the SP that needs to be re-imaged and select
Reboot. The SP will begin a reboot. Be prepared to stop the reboot in the Hyperterm session.

6. Boot to POST and interrupt POST.

£
a) Monitor the boot sequence (BIOS and POST tests) and be prepared to INTERRUPT THIS
PROCESS by hitting the CTRL-C key sequence on your keyboard at anytime during the
printout of this string of alpha characters as noted in the figure below. POST prints “<<
Stopping after POST >>” when the interrupt key sequence is accepted, and then will
complete all self tests before stopping.

 WARNING: Any errors reported from POST at this point must be resolved prior to
continuing the conversion process.

 NOTE: Do not use ESC to interrupt POST because this terminates POST before the
self-tests are run, and some of these self-tests are critical for a successful boot.

7. Handle MiniSetup Reboots for the Utility Partition

£
Background: Utility Partition images for CX4 are distributed in a generic form usable by any CX4
platform. When the Utility Partition is booted for the first time on any SP, the generic image is
customized to the particular SP Model type in what is called a MiniSetup process. This results in a
customized image for that particular SP.

a) If the Utility Partition image needs this first-time processing, it will stop after the POST testing
is done to prepare for MiniSetup. It is not necessary to manually interrupt POST with
CTRL-C again.

b) When these MiniSetup reboots have already been done in this SP, the boot proceeds directly
to the banner for starting the Utility Partition. If this happens, skip down in the procedure
where the Utility Partition startup is shown. Typically, in the case of conversions, however, the
Utility Partition image has just been loaded and must have a MiniSetup reboot. An exception
to this is when the Utility Partition reboot is retried again for some reason.

8. Handle MiniSetup Reboots for the Utility Partition (Continued)

 You may also see messages like INFORMATION: I/O Card 1 Power Up disabled. This
applies to any I/O Cards present slots other than slot 0. Power up is disabled on these
cards during this special MiniSetup process, but the slot 0 card remains powered.

You use the LAN Port to FTP a file from the Windows laptop or server to the array to re-image the
boot drives with a previous software version.

NOTE: Even though the Utility partition says you are enabling the LAN Service port, you are really
enabling the LAN Management port. Therefore you need connectivity to the customers LAN port.
There should already be a LAN cable plugged in most cases.

If the View LAN Service Port Settings option appears on the CLARiiON Utility Toolkit Main Menu
screen, then the LAN Service Port is already enabled. Select this option and press Enter.

multiple reboot process as the first SP did.

23.
Service Note 1 - The Utility Partition Fails to Boot 
The Utility Partition may fail to boot with one of the following symptoms:

1. Errors from POST similar to the following:

ErrorCode: 0x00000187
ErrorDesc:
FRU: All System FRUs
Device: DIAG MENU
Description: Disk not logged in Error!
Rev: 01.27

int13 - ALTERNATE RESET (712)

Resetting Storage Processor...

A second attempt to boot the Utility Partition usually succeeds. Simply break into POST when the
SP reboots and retry the steps to boot the Utility Partition a couple of times. If multiple attempts
fail, then escalate to CLARiiON Technical Support.

2. A series of messages are displayed on the screen as the Utility Partition boots which look
similar to int13 - GET DRIVE PARAMETERS (Extended) (xxxx). The xxxx value increases as
the boot progresses. The last message displayed is typically 13xx. That value varies
depending on timing and the platform type. If the messages stop and no output appears for
more than 15 minutes or if the SP resets and reruns POST, then do the following:

a. Completely power off the array (including all enclosures).

b. Verify that cabling is correct and properly seated.
c. Attempt to boot the Utility Partition on the same SP again (continue logging the HyperTerminal
session).
d. If that fails, attempt to boot the Utility Partition on the other SP (be sure to attach the serial
cable to this SP and log this HyperTerminal session to a NEW/DIFFERENT logfile).
e. If that fails, collect the following support material and escalate to CLARiiON Technical
Support:
SPCollects from the source array (obtained after installing the conversion packages)
HyperTerminal logs from all boot attempts of each SP
Hard and/or soft copies of the BOM included in the conversion kit
Serial numbers and revisions of the items in the Conversion Kit (for example, LCCs, SPs,
Midplane, cables, if they aren’t already included in the BOM)
