2. A cistern is placed on the roof of a building. The roof is 8 m above ground and the cistern
contains water to a depth of 0.4 m. Find the gage pressure at the bottom of the cistern.
ANSWER: 𝟒 𝐤𝐏𝐚
𝑝 = 𝜌𝑔ℎ = 1000 kg m−3 × 10 m s−2 × 0.4 m = 4 000 Pa = 4 kPa
3. Find the depth in a pool of water at which the gage pressure is 50 kPa.
ANSWER: 𝟓 𝐦 ℎ = 𝑝/𝜌𝑔 = 50 000 Pa ÷ (1000 kg m−3 × 10 m s−2 ) = 5 m
: A book measures 0.25 m long by 0.20 m wide by 5.0 cm thick and has a
mass of 1.8 kg.
1. Find the pressure the book exerts when it is placed broadside on a horizontal surface.
ANSWER: 𝟑𝟔𝟎 𝐏𝐚 = 𝟎. 𝟑𝟔 𝐤𝐏𝐚
𝑃 = 𝑊/𝐴 = 𝑚𝑔/𝐴 = 1.8 kg × 10 m s−2 ÷ (0.25 m × 0.20 m) = 360 Pa
Accept 350 Pa = 0.35 kPa
2. Find the pressure it exerts when a long edge of the closed book is placed on a horizontal
surface.
ANSWER: 𝟏𝟒𝟎𝟎 𝐏𝐚 = 𝟏. 𝟒 𝐤𝐏𝐚
𝑃 = 𝑊/𝐴 = 𝑚𝑔/𝐴 = 1.8 kg × 10 m s−2 ÷ (0.25 m × 0.050 m) = 1400 Pa
3. Estimate the pressure it exerts when it is opened flat on a horizontal surface to the middle
page.
ANSWER: 𝟏𝟔𝟎 𝐏𝐚 = 𝟎. 𝟏𝟔 𝐤𝐏𝐚
10. 𝑃 = 𝑊/𝐴 = 𝑚𝑔/𝐴 = 1.8 kg × 10 m s−2 ÷ ((0.25 m + 0.050 m + 0.25 m) × 0.2 m)The
density of a certain alloy is 6400 kg/m3 . What is the mass of a cube of the alloy 50 cm on the
side?
ANSWER: 800 kg [𝑀 = 𝜌𝑉 = 6400 kg/m3 × (0.5 m)3 = 800 kg.]
11. The density of water is 1000 kg/m3 at 4 °C. What is the volume of 300 kg of water at 4 °C?
ANSWER: 0.3 m3 = 3 × 105 cm3 [ 𝑉 = 𝑀/𝜌 = 300 kg ÷ (1000 kg/m3 ) =
0.3 m3 .]
12. What is the density in SI units of a substance if 21 g of it has a volume of 20 cm3 ?
ANSWER: 1050 kg/m3 [𝜌 = 𝑀/𝑉 = (21 × 10−3 kg) ÷ (20 × 10−6 m3 ) =
1050 kg/m3 ]
= 160 Pa
1. What is the volume of 99.9 kg of water at 15 ℃ if the density of water is 999 kg/m3 at
that temperature?
ANSWER: 0.1 m3 𝑉 = 𝑚/𝜌 = 99.9 kg ÷ 999 kg/m3 = 0.1 m3
2. What is the mass of a 0.5 m3 block of aluminium if the density of aluminium is
2700 kg/m3 ?
ANSWER: 1350 kg 𝑚 = 𝜌𝑉 = 2700 kg/m3 × 0.5 m3 = 1350 kg
3. What is the density of a substance if 5 kg of it occupies 0.004 m3 ?
ANSWER: 1250 kg/m3 𝜌 = 𝑚/𝑣 = 5 kg ÷ 0.004 m3 = 1250 kg/m3
PREAMBLE: The acceleration due to gravity at a location is 10 m/s2 .
1. What is the gauge pressure at a depth of 5 m below the surface of a liquid of density
700 kg/m3 ?
ANSWER: 35 000 Pa = 35 kPa
𝑃 = 𝜌𝑔ℎ = 700 kg/m3 × 10 m/s2 × 5 m = 35 000 Pa = 35 kPa
2. At what depth below the surface of a liquid of density 800 kg/m3 is the gauge pressure
400 Pa?
ANSWER: 0.05 m
ℎ = 𝑃/𝜌𝑔 = 400 Pa ÷ (800 kg/m3 × 10 m/s 2 ) = 0.05 m
3. What is the density of a liquid if the gauge pressure is 5000 Pa at a depth of 0.2 m?
ANSWER: 2500 kg/m3
𝜌 = 𝑃/ℎ𝑔 = 5000 Pa ÷ (0.2 m × 10 m/s2 ) = 2500 kg/m3 :
