What I Need to Know
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
master the art of evaluating samples of radio scripts that focus on the format and
content. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different learning
situations. The language used recognizes your diverse vocabulary level. The lessons
are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course but the order in which
you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook or other materials
you are now using.

The module has one lesson:

• Lesson 2 – Tune In to Effective Radio Script

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. identify the parts of a radio script, its format and content guidelines;
2. promote constructive criticism and positive reinforcement in evaluating samples
of radio scripts; and
3. evaluate samples of radio scripts focusing on format and content.

Hello there, Patroller! You have just opened a new door of

knowledge as you begin to read this module. Are you
excited to start your learning journey? Now, take a deep
breath, exhale all the negative things that are bothering
your mind, and do not forget to smile. You can do this!

1
What I Know
Before you start this module, take this pretest to find out what you already
know about the topic. Take a comfortable position. Relax and prepare yourself to
answer. Are you ready?

General Instructions: Use another sheet of paper or your notebook for ALL your
answers to ALL ACTIVITIES.

Task 1. Radio Stations

Lesson
Tune In to Effective Radio
2 Script

Radio script writing is th art of crafting engaging content for radio broadcasts. It
involves creating dialogue, sound effects, and music cues to deliver information,
entertainment, or a combination of both to listeners. A well-written radio script
captures attention, conveys messages effectively, and leaves a lasting impact on the
audience.

What’s In
Before we proceed, let’s have a review first of our previous lesson.

Taking reference from the lesson on Principles of Radio Broadcasting, read the
following scenarios and write TRUE if is exemplifies these principles and FALSE if it
is not.

_______________ 1. A radio journalist double-checks all sources and facts before airing
a news story to ensure its accuracy.
_______________ 2. During a radio broadcast, the host speaks in a relaxed and
conversational tone, using simple language.
_______________ 3. A script is edited to remove unnecessary details, focusing on
delivering the main points quickly.
_______________ 4. A radio broadcaster uses everyday language and includes
interactive dialogue to keep listeners engaged.
_______________ 5. The radio script is proofread and edited to avoid grammatical
errors and ensure the message is clear.
_______________ 6. A radio broadcaster immediately airs breaking news without fact
checking to be the first to report it.
_______________ 7. A radio news piece is filled with long pauses and redundant
phrases.
_______________ 8. A broadcaster includes multiple sources in a report without
verifying their credibility to save time.
_______________ 9. A radio script uses jargon and complex technical terms to sound
more professional.
_______________ 10. A radio broadcaster spends 15 minutes explaining a single news
item with intricate details and long sentences.

Now Now that you can identify the principles of a

radio broadcasting, I can say that you have mastered it.
You can now proceed to the new topic.

What’s New

Notes to the Teacher

Radio script writing hones clear and concise writing skills to convey
messages effectively within limited airtime. It enhances technical skills such
as script formatting, timing, and basic sound editing for seamless production
that will foster your creativity.

What’s It
Radio scripwriting is the framework for your story. It brings together the most
important elements, and helps your audience the significance of the points from the
news you will present (Ragasa 2020). In addition, it ensures technical accuracy of
information. The script ensures the continuity of the program as it maximizes the
airtime (Matela 2021).

Guidelines in Radio Script Writing

Cruz (2010) and Ragasa (2020)
1. All copy is typed or computerized and printed. Keep copy neat without
strikeover or deletion. Minor corrections may be added in pencil if necessary,
but bear in mind that penciled changes will lead to misread copy.
2. Double or triple space-typewrite all lines and paragraphs.
3. All spoken lines should observe standard capitalization rules.
4. All instructions and non-spoken lines should be typed in big or capital letters.
Note: Before, some formats still use ALL CAPS. That style may still be applied in
writing scripts.
5. Provide phonetic spelling.
6. Speech has rhythm and should be kept in mind when writing a radio script.
7. Use standard 8 ½ by 11 inch paper. Use paper that does not rattle when news
is read in front of live microphone.
8. A radio script should display an element of “newness”.

9
9. Key repetitive statements help the listener get the message.
10. If necessary, end with a background on what happened before the present story
developed.
11. In sentence structure, keep the subject close together and use active rather
than the passive voice of verb.

Basic Process in Radio Script Writing

(Matela 2021)

1. Get a good briefing, know your listener.

2. Do research about the topic.
3. Prepare content outline.
4. Write the first draft.
5. Read it aloud. Time the material.
6. Visualize the script.
7. Review the script.
8. Revise for the style, timing and accuracy.
