religion. He does not discriminate, but respects each individual regardless of their status. He always tries to
avoid offensive and harsh words and always shows respect to others. It is also equally important to be very
careful about one’s behaviour in any social gathering. Not only our words, but our action and gestures should
also be polite. Polite actions include opening doors for others, greeting them, giving up our seats in public
transportations, not encroaching on their personal space, etc. Give everybody an equal opportunity to speak
and never try to speak while another person is speaking. Respect the person who is speaking. Do not get
agitated if one does not agree with you or when you disagree with others. In a group of people always wait for
your turn to speak. Do not monopolise the whole conversation. If ever you want to criticise anybody, do it in a
manner that it does not hurt the person. Do it in a polite and civilised manner. It has often been said that
‘manners maketh man’. It is good manners that define us as civilised persons. We judge people based on their
words and actions and the polite, well-mannered individual is immediately perceived as mature, confident and
capable. One may amass great wealth or fame, but if his manners are unpleasant, he does not command
respect. Therefore, if one wants to be considered as a respectable and confident person, he first has to treat

are limited. War conditions and even wars fought with Pakistan during the last sixty years and keeping up the
preparations for the impending one are also draining away quite a sizeable resources of the country. Country’s
independence, its integrity and solidarity has to be the prime concern and no relaxation in that field can be
permitted, whatsoever be its fall out. This has also been a cause for the country not being able to combat its
poverty which should have been fought at the war-level. In the industrial sphere, units manufacturing luxury
consumer items must be made to refashion their patterns of production in terms of export potential and the

labours. Establishment of Vocational Education and Training (VET) institutes is a big step towards the
eradication of poverty from our country. Women (and girls) form around 50 percent of the world population.

In today’s world, while voices are rising constantly for the protection of Planet Earth the natural habitat of the
human race from various ecological threats, these same voices seem to show an amazing tolerance for a form
of pollution that is a growing problem: noise. Airplane traffic is increasing by five percent a year. Urban noise is

We have granted ourselves the right to make noise. On the other hand, what about our responsibilities? Have
we developed a sense of acoustic responsibility? The evidence suggests that we have not. Many people seem
to believe they have unlimited liberty to make noise with cars and motorbikes and with loud music at home
and in the street. In some countries, measures have been taken to force people to produce less noise. In
Britain, for example, a law has been passed preventing people from disturbing their neighbours with music at
night. But though these measures constitute one step towards recognising noise as a shared environmental
concern, they still address the issue only partially and don’t allow for a concrete change to take place.
It is widely accepted now that we should deal with our rubbish in a responsible way; and many people have
started to demonstrate awareness of this conventional form of pollution. Noise is in reality a particularly
insidious form of rubbish. It destroys community life, pursues us into our homes to spoil our tranquillity, keeps
us from sleeping and is the cause of many stress-related illnesses, as well as hearing loss. Our acoustic
environment is property to us all. Everyone has the right to use it, but no one has the right to abuse it. Let’s
start using it sensibly.

Kip, nap, doze, forty winks, shut-eye and snooze are all expressions we use to describe that mysterious state,
sleep. We all do it, we can’t get by without it and by the time we reach old age most of us have spent 20 years
sleeping. Yet, nobody knows why we do it. Most scientists reckon that by resting our bodies, we allow time for
essential maintenance work to be done. Any damage that there is can be put right more quickly if energy isn’t
being used up doing other things. Injured animals certainly spend more time asleep than usual while their
wounds are healing. And quite a few illnesses make us feel drowsy so our body can get on with curing us.
Sleep is controlled by certain chemicals. These build up during the day, eventually reaching levels that make us
tired. We can control the effects of these chemicals to some extent. Caffeine helps to keep us awake while
alcohol and some medicines make us sleepy. By using electrodes, scientists are able to study what goes on in
people’s heads while they sleep. They have discovered that when we first drop off everything slows down. The
heart beats more slowly and our breathing becomes shallow. After about 90 minutes our eyes start to twitch
and we go into what is called REM sleep. REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement, and it’s a sign that we’ve
started to dream.
You have dreams every night, even if you don’t remember them. There are all sorts of theories about why we
dream. One is that it gives the brain a chance to sort out the day’s activities, filling everything away in the right
place. Another is that the brain gets bored while we’re asleep and organises its own entertainment - a sort of
late night cinema! A lot of people say they have to have eight hours‘ sleep every night while others seem to
manage on a lot less. One thing’s for sure, we all need some sleep and going without it can have some very
strange effects. An American disc-jockey, who stayed awake for 200 hours to raise money for charity, thought
things were bursting into flames all around him after 120 hours without sleep. He survived the ordeal but was
depressed for three months afterwards.
Humans are unusual in the way they sleep. Most animals have a sleep during the day and tests have shown
that a siesta can be beneficial for us too. It’s even been recommended that airline pilots should have a nap
during long flights so that they are more alert for the tricky business of landing. So next time you nod off after
Sunday lunch in front of the telly, don’t feel embarrassed about it. Science, after all, is on your side.

Arctic Circle. Every place to the north of this line has at least one complete period of 24 hours darkness every
year. The coldest places in the world are generally between the Arctic Circle and the North Pole. But as the
Arctic Circle is merely a line drawn on maps and globes, there is no sudden change on the surface of the earth
itself. The same cold climate carries for some distance south. This very cold region lying around the Arctic
Circle is called the Tundra Region.
Here the winters are long, cold and dreary while the summers are short and cool. The sun is warm enough in
summer to melt part of the ice and snow, making growth possible. Clumps of tough, wiry grass and small,
stunted trees grow in most parts. Large trees cannot grow as the long roots can not push their way through the
frozen ground (Permafrost) which lies 45-60 cm below the surface. Flowerless plants called lichens, are
common. As these plants need only moisture and as they have no roots, they grow even - 2 - on frozen
surfaces completely covered with snow. Some people in Iceland make bread from lichen moss while reindeer
moss (another lichen) forms the principal food for that very useful Tundra animal-the Reindeer. In sheltered
parts of the Tundra- Alaska, Iceland, Greenland and Lapland-wild flowers and many kinds of berries grow
during the short summer months. But, on the whole, the Tundra is a cold bleak region where human life is very
difficult.
The Eskimos, numbering about 30,000 are a hardy race living 1n the Tundra region of Northern Canada, Alaska
and Greenland. We often read that Eskimos live in snow houses called igloos but this is not altogether correct.
Only about one third of them use igloos while the majority live in pucca houses built of logs of wood or even
stone In summer, they live in skin tents which can be carried easily from place to place. Because of the bitter
cold, the Eskimos need plenty of heat-giving food and this they find in plenty in their barren land. Their main
supply comes from the seal, which strange enough, is not a fish but an animal which has to breathe like our
horses and cows.
Since the sea is frequently frozen, the seal has to make a “breathing hole” in the ice and keep it Open by
swimming round and round. The Eskimo fishermen wait patiently near those holes for hours and as soon as a
seal appears, they throw a harpoon at it. This is a weapon with a sharp point and hook attached to a strong
leather line. The point enters the seal’s body, the hook prevents the point from coming out while the line gives
no chance to the seal to escape beneath the ice. With the same harpoon, the Eskimos also hunt whales and
walruses. While the flesh and fat of these animals provide food, the bones are used for making useful
instruments such as the sharp harpoon points, hooks, needles and ornaments Besides sea animals, the
Eskimos also hunt the savage polar bear and large hairy caribou.
To add a little variety to his usual meals of fish or meat, the Eskimo gathers tender shoots and such berries as
wild currants and blue berries. For clothing, the Eskimos wear waterproof shirts made of seals’ intestines, thick
fur coats and trousers, furry head hoods and waterproof sealskin boots. All articles of clothing are made by the
women-folk. On the snow-covered land or frozen water, the Eskimos travel on sledges dragged by five, seven
or nine strong dogs called huskies.
