Read the following passage and answer all the questions. Awarded

A New Kind of Shopworker

The Model-T robot is the shop-working robot of the future. Used in Tokyo supermarkets,
its movements are controlled by a human employee using virtual reality (VR)
technology. The Model-T is not able to deal with customers and is restricted to roles
like putting bottles of drinks on shelves. Eventually, though, it is hoped to take on all
sorts of jobs. The Model-T robot takes its name from another piece of technology. The
straightforward and inexpensive design of the Model-T Ford car revolutionised the
transport industry in 1908 and it is hoped the robot will do the same for supermarkets.
The robot was deliberately built to resemble a kangaroo rather than a human, due to a

e
growing body of research on ideal robot design. Apparently, the public can feel uneasy

l
around robots with human features. FamilyMart, one of the biggest retailers in Japan,
have easily incorporated the robots into their budget. They say customer opinion will
ultimately determine whether the robots become widely used. The Model-T’s ability to
do simple tasks has been proven and the public reaction is eagerly awaited.

p
There is currently a shortage of shop workers in Japan. This is a problem which the
invention of the Model-T aims to deal with. There are too few people of the right age
to be shopworkers, mainly due to the country’s low birth rate combined with an ageing
population. At this stage, the movements of the Model-T are a little awkward and basic.

m
Also, it cannot match human speed. However, if two or more shops all have the same
layout, a worker using the VR can remotely operate robots in multiple stores
simultaneously, making the invention more efficient.

a
FamilyMart are proud of their history of trialling new technology. In 2006, they began
using self-service checkouts long before these took off in other countries. However, the
amount of electricity and resources the robots use has been criticised. Japan is not the

S
only country to bring robots into the workforce: in a restaurant in Guangzhou, China,
customers are greeted by robot waiters that show them to their tables and take orders,
while in South Korea, they prepare dishes and bring meals to diners. As a result, they
have been blamed for losing human shopworkers their jobs, although FamilyMart have
stated this wasn’t their intention.

For questions 1-3, please answer in complete sentences. (2 marks each)

1. What task is the Model-T robot currently able to do in stores?

2. What is the reason for the robot’s unusual, non-human appearance?

3. Why is there high demand for shop workers in Japan?
