Lesson 1: Introduction of Science, Technology and Society
1. Define
a. Science
Science is the study of both natural and physical world in a systematic manner.
This exploration is born from curiosity and the need to understand how our universe
works. We know that science is the main driver for creating new tools and knowledge to
shape how societies develop through time (UNESCO, n.d.).
b. Technology
Technology comes from scientific discoveries, but it's really about putting those
discoveries to use—building tools, machines, or systems that solve problems and
improve people's lives. Since technology and societal values influence each other, it's
closely tied to what society needs (Coffey 2021).
c. Society
Societies are formed by groups of people coming together, driven by our human
need to belong to various kinds of communities—whether that's a small town, a country,
or even something broader like Western culture. Each society develops its own unique
culture, shaped by shared ideas, customs, and behaviours that make it stand out from
others (Society and culture., n.d.).

Cons:
The economic effects of technology are not entirely favourable, despite these
advantages. Advancements in technology and automation have resulted in job
displacement within specific industries, hence widening the economic divide.
Businesses are more susceptible to cyberattacks and scams as a result of their
increasing reliance on technology, which raises concerns about data security and online
fraud. Further endangering long-term sustainability is the rapid loss of natural resources
required to support technological advancement. Technology errors can occasionally
cause major disruptions to business operations and productivity losses.
Do You Agree with the "Cons" of Science and Technology on Education and
Economy?
Yes, we agree with the cons of science and technology in both education and the
economy. In education, overreliance on technology can restrain critical thinking and
social skills, while in the economy, it can lead to job loss, security risks, and an
overdependence on technology that threatens productivity when systems fail. These
drawbacks underscore the need for balanced and thoughtful integration of technology,
ensuring that its use enhances rather than diminishes the quality of life for individuals
and society as a whole.
