Personal Profile

After qualifying FCPS I started my teaching career at Mayo Hospital Lahore (MHL) as
Senior Registrar in May 1991 where I was leading a team of residents in day to day
care of patients admitted to the unit. I attended two outpatient clinics each week, took
regular ward rounds and supervised the on call team in the Emergency. I planned and
designed regular teaching sessions for undergraduates & residents and assisted in the
administration of the unit. During that period I developed echocardiography & stress
test labs in the unit providing this facility to the whole medical floor of the hospital.

I joined King Edward Medical College (K.E.M.C.) Lahore as Assistant Professor

Medicine in 1996. My job involved attending outpatient clinics twice a week, three
ward rounds per week and both bedside as well as lecture hall teaching sessions. I also
participated in postgraduate resident training program of the unit. I was also consultant
in-charge of the 8 bedded Medical ICU. The facilities for assisted ventilation,
diagnostic and therapeutic Endoscopy, Echocardiography, Stress test lab and
Ultrasonography were available within the unit. I got actively involved in quite a few
clinical research projects during that period. I was elevated to Associate Professor at
K.E.M.C. in February 2001.

On my departmental promotion in February 2007 I was transferred to Allama Iqbal

Medical College Lahore where I was Chief consultant in Medical Unit III Jinnah
Hospital as well, heading a 48 Bedded teaching unit that has all the necessary
diagnostic and therapeutic facilities including GI endoscopy on the floor. In addition to
routine work I had one echocardiography session per week. My responsibilities also
included regular teaching of medical students both at the bedside as well as in lecture
halls. I was instrumental in bringing quite a few administrative and academic strategic
changes which ensured active student participation and encouraged student initiated
research activities. Our research was published in acclaimed international journals and
was widely acknowledged. Unit was transformed into first paperless working
environment. Through public and pharmaceutical sponsored funding we raised funds
to establish 6 bedded fully equipped ICU, Procedures room for invasive work, an IT
room with computers and 24/7 internet availability.

I served as Professor of Medicine at Allama Iqbal Medical College Lahore from

October 06, 2012 to February 06, 2013 and then at DG Khan Medical College Dera
Ghazi Khan from February 21, 2013 to September 15, 2013.

I joined King Edward Medical University (KEMU) on September 16, 2013 as

Professor of medicine on Higher Education Commission (HEC) tenure track scheme. I
was member of Board of Studies of Medicine and Curriculum Committee of KEMU. I
contributed a lot in development of modular teaching system for undergraduate
medical students. I was also supervisor of post graduate trainees in medicine for both
fellowship program by College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP) and
MD (Doctor of Medicine) program offered by KEMU. Apart from teaching I was
involved in clinical work that included twice weekly teaching rounds and OPD clinics.
On completion of my 4 years contract at KEMU as tenure track faculty I joined Akhtar
Saeed Medical and Dental College (ASMDC) Lahore on December 7, 2017 as
Professor of Medicine where I am serving till date.

I am on the approved register of College of Physician & Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP)

as supervisor for FCPS II in subject of Medicine. At present I am supervisor to 04
postgraduate trainees in Internal Medicine. I am paper assessor & examiner for FCPS
Part II medicine of CPSP. I have also been examiner for the final year MBBS

Teaching Assignments

Since 1991 I have been teaching a diverse group of undergraduate and postgraduate
medical students at different institutes I have served which include MBBS, Doctor of
physiotherapy (DPT), and Bachelor of Dental Surgery from De Montmorency College
of Dentistry, Postgraduate trainees in internal medicine for fellowship of CPSP and
MD KEMU. In addition to conventional lectures and seminars a major component of
teaching and training in medicine involves bedside teaching and demonstration of
physical signs in small groups. Weekly in depth clinical case presentation and
discussion by a multidisciplinary team and journal club presentations on new
developments in the field are always supervised by me. Whether a beginner in
medicine or a senior postgraduate resident I encourage active participation of each
student into discussion and clinical decision making. My teaching methodology is
liked by students and trainees alike as is evident from students/residents feedback.
Innovation in teaching:

To engage and attract students towards learning medicine I started with WhatsApp
groups of students batches on rotation in our unit. Student assignments were posted
and uncommon and rare cases were discussed and imaging studies shared with patients
consent. The response encouraged us to create an active Facebook group of students
and postgraduate residents where live case discussion is watched and participated by
them through live chats (written answers to their questions). I also manage a YouTube
video channel “Medicine by Prof Tariq Waseem” where I post my weekly lectures
and bedside demonstration of clinical signs for students. These innovations have
helped us a lot during this lock down and suspension of teaching and training activities
due to COVID pandemic.

Research

I am one of the Co-Investigators in a large trial on COVID-19 patients being

conducted by University of Health Sciences (UHS) and Pakistan Society of Internal
Medicine (PSIM) titled “PROTECT” which is a comparative study on
hydroxychloroquin alone or in combination with antivirals and antibiotics.

At KEMU I lead a multidisciplinary team of researchers from KEMU to collaborate

with Government College University Lahore (GCU). We proposed development of
Nano delivery system for Methotrexate and Hydroxychloroquin for use in diseases like
Rheumatoid Arthritis and SLE. Analytic Chemistry department GCU is working on the
project. We are now planning animal testing of these substances once GCU team
completes the analytic and bioavailability studies.

I encouraged my fellow faculty members at each of the institutes I served to initiate

innovative research ideas which resulted in submission of quite a few
projects/synopses to the respective Board of Studies in Medicine and project
evaluation committees and many of them completed and published in peer reviewed
journals.

MD and FCPS trainees under my supervision have completed many research projects.
Scores of Dissertations for FCPS medicine have been completed, approved and
published. Currently three FCPS medicine trainees are conducting their research work
under my supervision. Similarly four of my trainees in MD Medicine at KEMU
successfully completed their thesis and have been awarded diplomas.

I have authored more than fifty articles published in various peer reviewed journals.
Curriculum Development:

As a Member of Curriculum Committee KEMU I have participated in development of

teaching modules for undergraduate medical students. I have contributed not only in
updating the existing curriculum but also suggested and got incorporated newer
methodologies of knowledge transfer.

I developed the curriculum and course contents for two years Diploma in Family
Medicine (DFM) at KEMU which Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PMDC).

Clinical Services

In addition to teaching and training undergraduate and postgraduate students I rendered

services as a consultant visiting physician in Medical Unit III of Akhtar Saeed Trust
Hospital (ASTH) Lahore which is an attached teaching hospital of Akhtar Saeed
Medical and Dental College Lahore. I conduct four ward rounds per week on patients
admitted to the unit and guide a team of residents in day to day care of patients
admitted to. I also attend two outpatient clinics each week.
I am trained to perform and interpret transthoracic Echocardiography and have been
performing the same since 1998. I have a regular list for echocardiography at ASTH
twice a week.

In addition to my regular teaching responsibilities I have held following administrative and

management assignments at KEMU

utilized to add a fully equipped seminar room and 3 computer work stations with high speed
internet facilities for West Medical Ward. Similarly facilities for GI Video Endoscopy,
Echocardiography and Color Doppler studies were also started through these funds. A large
number of students, trainees and patients are benefitted from these facilities.
