Journalism has become an important part of our daily living and can be
accessed almost everywhere from print, radio, television and social media.
It had helped the public to satisfy their innate desire to know what is new.
In this module, you will learn the definition and functions of Journalism.
Through selected readings and resources provided you will learn how
Journalism affects our lives.
What is Journalism?
The word <Journalism= is derived from the Latin word, diurna, which
means daily. With this, Journalism is the communication of information about
daily events packed into few words, sounds or pictures.
Good journalists love to read and explore about the world around them.
I. News
The traditional roles of the campus paper were specified by Harold Spears
and C.H. Lewshe Jr. in their book, <An Introduction to Journalism=.
Student writers are dealing more about controversial topics than the high
school publications few years ago would allow. They are no longer satisfied to write
only about school dances, pep rallies, sports and the latest field trip to the
museum; students are exploring in topics like bullying, teenage pregnancy, eating
disorders, and other issues that concern them.
What does it means to be a reporter in the age of the internet and social media?
What is journalism?
Treating your audience with respect. Treating your sources with respect.
Providing context so people understand the greater truths beyond the facts and
doing it all carefully, thoughtfully and ethically… no matter what medium.
