ASSIGNMENT-2 (AMOS) 01/04/2019

Theories of failure:
1. A bolt is acted upon by an axial pull of 10kN along with a transverse shear force of 5kN. Determine the
diameter of the bolt required according to various criteria’s or theories of failure. Yield stress of the bolt
material in uniaxial tensile test is 270 MPa. Use a FOS of 3 and poisson’s ratio is 0.3
(a) Max. principal stress theory or Rankine’s criteria
(b) Max. shear stress theory or Tresca’s criteria
(c) Max. principal strain theory or St.Venant’s criteria
(d) Max. strain energy theory or Heigh’s criteria
(e) Max. distortion energy theory or Von-Mises criteria.
2. A cylindrical shaft made of steel with yield stress 250 MPa, is subjected to static loads consists of bending
moment, M = 8 kNm and a torque, T = 7 kNm. Using a FOS of 2, determine the shaft diameter by applying
Distortion energy theory and Octahedral shearing stress theory..
3. At a point in a steel member, the state of stress is as shown in the Fig. The yield stress is 413.7 MPa. If the
shearing stress at the point, τ is 206.85 MPa. When yielding starts, what is the tensile stress,σ at the point.
(a) According to Max. shear stress theory
(b) According to Octahedral shearing stress theory

4. Fig. shows 3 stress elements A, B & C subjected to different states of stress. Which one of these 3, do you
think will yield first and yield last according to
(a) Max. principal stress theory
(b) Max. strain theory
(c) Max. shear stress theory
Poisson’s ratio, µ is 0.25

5. A thin steel tube of 50 mm mean diameter and 2 mm thickness is subjected to twisting moment.
Determine the torque that can be transmitted by the tube if the criteria of failure is
a. Maximum shear stress
b. Maximum strain energy
c. Maximum shear strain energy. Use F.O.S = 3, Critical stress = 270 MPa, poisson’s ratio, µ = 0.3.

Thick Cylinder:

6. A thick cylindrical shell, 180 mm internal diameter, is subjected to an internal pressure of 10N/mm2.
a) Find the thickness required for the shell if the maximum permissible tensile stress is 30N/mm2.
b) Find the hoop stress at exterior surface of the cylinder.

7. A steel cylinder of 300 mm external diameter is to be shrunk to another steel cylinder of 150 mm internal
diameter. After shrinking, the diameter at the junction is 250 mm & radial pressure at the common junction
is 28 N/mm2. Find the original difference in radii at the junction. Take ES = 2x105 N/mm2.

8. A steel tube of 200 mm external diameter is to be shrunk to another steel tube of 60 mm internal diameter.
The diameter at the junction after shrinkage is 120 mm. Before shrinking on, the difference of diameters
at the junction is 0.08 mm.
a) Calculate the radial pressure at the junction
b) Calculate hoop stresses developed in the 2 tubes after shrinking on.
Take ES = 2x105 N/mm2

9. Determine the maximum and minimum hoop stress across the section of a pipe of 400 mm internal
diameter & 100 mm thick, when the pipe contains a fluid at a pressure of 8 N/mm2. Also sketch the radial
pressure and hoop stress distribution across the section.
Determine the increase in inside & outside radii of the thick cylinder under the action of internal pressure.
Take E = 2x105 N/mm2 & poisson’s ratio is 0.3

10. A steel cylinder of 100 mm internal diameter & 160 mm external diameter is strengthened by shrinking
another cylinder of same length on to it. The inside diameter of this cylinder was originally 159.925mm .
Find the external diameter of the outer cylinder so that the contact pressure after shrinkage will be 19.62
N/mm2.

11. A thick walled steel cylinder with radii a = 50 mm & b = 100 mm is subjected to an internal pressure, p.
The yield stress in tension for the material is 350 MPa. Using a
FOS = 2 . determine the max. working pressure, p according to,
(a) Max. principal stress theory
(b) Max. shear stress theory

12. A pipe made of steel has yield stress, σy = 350 MPa & E = 2x105 N/mm2 . If the pipe has an internal
diameter = 100 mm & subjected to an internal pressure = 70N/mm2. Determine the proper thickness for
the pipe wall, according to Max. shear stress theory. Use FOS = 1.5

13. A thick cylinder of 100 mm internal radius and 150 mm external radius is subjected to an internal pressure
of 60 MN/m2 and external pressure of 30 MN/m2 . Determine hoop and radial stresses at the inside,
midpoint & outside of cylinder together with longitudinal stress if the cylinder is assumed to have closed
ends.
