Intro to Computers and its types

Introduction to Computer Science

What is computer science?

 A theory and practice that allows you to program a computer to do what you want it to
 A tool that helps you tell a story or make something happen with technology
 A discipline that emphasizes persistence in problem solving — a skill that is applicable across disciplines,
driving job growth and innovation across all sectors of the workforce
 A skill that teaches students how to use computers to create, not just consume

 What is not computer science?

 learning how to type or use a mouse
 learning to use word processing, spreadsheet, or presentation software (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Google
Docs & Drive)
 learning how to build or repair computers
Why study computers?
A computer is a profoundly important technological device
Broadly impactful, occasionally disruptive

• Computers have had impacts on the way we live, the way we think, and
the way we do business.

• But we are perhaps only 1/3 to 1/2 of the way through the process of
absorbing the impact of computing in our lives
 Computers will have a substantial influence on any area of study you
choose, understanding computers is important Computers have become an
integral part of our lives

Pervasive computing, also known as ubiquitous computing is a concept where

computing is made to appear anytime and everywhere.

It is a growing trend of embedding computational capability (generally in the form

of microprocessors) into everyday objects to make them effectively communicate and
perform useful tasks .
The Computer Defined

What is a computer?
A computer can be defined as a programmable electronic machine that accepts
input(data), processes it and gives out results(information)

It allows the user to store all sorts of data and then ‘process’ that data, or
carry out actions with the data, such as calculating numbers or organizing
words .
The word computer
It is derived from a Latin Word Computare, which means to “calculate’,” to Sum up” so,
computer means device that performs computations.
Therefore, by word a computer means a device that perform computations
Computers are important because

1. Nowadays computer plays a vital role in our routine life because everything has become
online.

2. the computer saves a lot of time and helps in errorless work.

3. the computer connects people anywhere at any time through the network.

4. the computer helps to do the work in an organized manner.

5. the computer is used to gather information from various sources.

6. It is essential for preparing school and college projects.

Computer Model:
 The data consist of number, text sound
images.

 The Process Converts and process the

data.

 The information consists of number, text, sound images, videos.

 The data is given to computers with the help of computer input devices.
• Hardware:
• A computer's hardware consists of electronic devices; the parts you can see and touch.
• The term "device" refers to any piece of hardware used by the computer, such as a keyboard,
monitor, modem, mouse, etc.

• Software
• Software is any set of instructions that tells the hardware what to do and how to do it.
• It is a general term for various kind of programs, like MS Word, games etc.
Computer System
A System is a group of Related components that make up a body to perform
a specific function, therefor computer System is defined as:

“The computer along with various units and software that perform
different activities in data processing is collectively known as computer system.”
Types of Computers
Computers for individuals

Computers for organizations

Computers in society
Computers for Individuals
Desktop computers
The most common type of computer
Sits on the desk or floor
Performs a variety of task
Laptop computers
Small portable computers also called notebook
computers
About 8 ½ by 13 inches
Typically, as powerful as a desktop
Tablet computers
Newest development in portable computers
Input is through a pen (or hand), touch screen
Computers for Individuals
Smart phones
Hybrid of cell phone and PDA
A cell phone that offers more advanced computing ability
Web surfing, e-mail access, GPS and many other Apps
Allow users to store information, install programs
Computers for Individuals
Wearable computers
Also known as body-borne computers are the latest trend in
computing

Essentially, common computer applications (e-mail, multimedia,

calendar, scheduler) are integrated into watches, cell phones,
visors and even clothing
Computers for Organizations
Network servers
Centralized computer, all other devices connect to it
Provides access to network resources
Multiple servers are called server farms
Often simply a powerful desktop
Workstations
Specialized computers
Optimized for science or graphics

More powerful than a desktop

Mostly seen in offices or attached to a network

Computers for Organizations
Supercomputers
The most powerful computers made
Handle large and complex calculations.
Process trillions of operations per second.
Found in research organizations.
Mainframes
Used in large organizations
They are of size of a large cabinet
Handle thousands of users simultaneously
Users access through a terminal
Computers in Society
Examples of some of the computers available in
society

Education Finance Government

Healthcare
Advantages of Computers

Speed
Reliability

Disadvantages of Computers
No, I.Q
Violation of privacy
