Title: A Social Media Analytics Framework to Increase Prospective Students’ Interests in STEM
and TVET Education
a. PROBLEM
The study arises from the issue of low enrollment rates in Science, technology,
engineering and mathematics (STEM) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training
(TVET) degrees in many countries. In regard to this, the researchers believe that the use of
social media would be effective in raising awareness and promoting the STEM and TVET
disciplines.
b. OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this study are to explore various social media applications in education
and study these applications towards increasing students’ interests and propose a suitable
framework for Malaysian higher education institutions.
c. THEORETICAL/CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
This study proposes and describes a framework to increase prospective students’
interest in STEM and TVET using social media and big data analytics. This framework is
developed by following the theory synthesis methodology which is a broad overarching term to
describe various approaches to combining, integrating, and synthesizing research findings.

In light of this, the framework is proposed by the integration of multiple methods namely

social media, role model/mentoring, massive open online course (MOOC) and data analytics.
The target of the framework is prospective students in Malaysia who might enroll in STEM and
TVET courses in the higher education institutions in Malaysia. The three main social media
such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are selected as the main platforms to build awareness
and share content with the audiences.. There are four primary components of the framework
namely social media, role model/mentoring, MOOC and big data analytics.

d. METHODOLOGY
The study utilizes a developmental type of research which has been defined as the
systematic study of designing, developing, and evaluating instructional programs, processes,
and products that must meet criteria of internal consistency and effectiveness. Developmental
research is particularly important in the field of instructional technology. The most common
types of developmental research involve situations in which the product-development process is
analyzed and described, and the final product is evaluated.
The process of theory synthesis includes the following steps: (1) synthesis preparation,
which involves clarifying theories, abstracting them to make them comparable, and extracting
what is viewed as most plausible and useful to the question at hand; (2) synthesis, which is the
systematic comparison of theories for points of convergence and divergence; and (3) synthesis
refinement, which involves closer analysis of the theories with a view to the production of a
more robust theory for practical application, including a clarification of causal processes.

e. KEY RESULT
Based on the results of the study, the main benefits of the proposed social media
analytics framework are the following:
- potential increase in prospective students’ interest in STEM and TVET education using
an effective social media marketing strategy (Meyer, 2019)
- potential increase in interest may increase the number of students enrolled in STEM and
TVET courses in higher education institutions and will potentially increase the revenues
of the institutions
- data collected can be used for classifications and the prediction of prospective students
for an effective marketing strategy
- the positive reputation of the institution can be improved.
On the other hand, the difficulties in creating a successful social media framework are in
selecting the appropriate audiences, content genres, post formats, and advertising tactics. For
this reason, the big data analytics component is important. Nevertheless, the framework will
need to go through a number of trial and error testing before the appropriate audiences, posts,
contents, and marketing plan can be chosen.

f. CONCLUSION

Despite the suggested framework's apparent simplicity, each of its components is

important and took a long time to build. Numerous topics, including marketing, data science,
artificial intelligence, software development, artificial intelligence, and many more possible
STEM and TVET fields, are covered by the big data analytics, massive open online course
(MOOC), and role model/mentoring.

g. STATEMENT
From the case study reviewed, I therefore conclude higher education institutions are
expected to gain significantly from the proposed social media analytics framework in terms of
student enrollment, income, and favorable reputations.
