INTRODUCTION
Your objective is simple: its either finish first or get finished off. You must win, using any and every method at your disposal, fair or (usually) foul. As you violently battle your way around the tracks while bumping into walls, other cars, or make your acquaintance with landmines, your vehicle will take damage. Reach zero, and youre out of the game bigtime as your vehicle explodes into flames. During your frenzied laps, youll see various power-ups randomly strewn here and there that will help you out, if you can grab them before anyone else, that is. Welcome to Excessive Speed!

INSTALLATION/AUTORUN PANEL
The game should install automatically when the CD is inserted. If the autorun feature is disabled, nothing will happen and you must manually start the installation. Click the Start button, select Run and type D:\autorun.exe (where D: is the letter of your CD-ROM drive). Install/Start the game. After the installation is completed, this button will change to Play. Maximum installation makes the game run faster, while minimum installation takes less harddrive space. Remove the game from your harddrive. Advanced settings. See p. 13 for more info.

CARS
Each car has its own unique set of capabilities, aswell as each track has its own unique surface properties. For some tracks it may be a good idea to choose the car that best fits the track conditions. Cars vary in five different statistical categories: MAX SPEED HANDLING ACCELERATION ACCELERATION WEIGHT The faster you drive, the more damage youll take if you collide. A car with limited handling tends to understeer and skid very easily. Vital at the start, this determines how long it takes you to reach max speed. A heavier car has a slower max speed, but is less likely to slide or be knocked around by other cars. This determines how much punishment your car can take before it explodes.

STRENGTH

In addition to the six vehicles available to you during the game, a seventh secret car can also be found.

POWER-UPS THAT CAN BE CARRIED/LOCKED (WHITE ICONS)

HEAT-SEEKING MISSILE Chases the car in front of you and explodes, causing some damage.

REAR SHOT Fires backwards and hopefully hits the opponent behind you. Non heatseeking.

ROCKETS Too many cars ahead of you? These four rockets will do the work!

HEAT-SEEKING MINE Leave a nice surprise for your followers! Mines cause severe damage, but takes a few moments to activate after theyre dropped. CHAINGUN Turns your car into a weapon. Your can fire five rounds before youre out of ammo. FREEZE Turns its victim into a block of ice. Frozen cars are very sensitive and tends to break down very easily.

TURBO Increases your speed dramatically for a few seconds.

DOUBLE TURBO Same as turbo, but it can be used twice.

JUMP Gives your car jumping ability. Useful if you want to avoid oilslicks or mines. OIL Drop this while turning, and the cars behind you will drive all sorts of funny directions. TWISTER In fact a small tornado that captures a car and sets it down facing the wrong direction.

POWER-UPS THAT ARE USED AUTOMATICALLY (GREEN ICONS)

EARTHQUAKE Makes the screen wobble for a few seconds, giving you a hard time trying to stay on the road.

ERASER Removes all power-ups currently on the road.

FULL REPAIR Completely repairs your car and gives you maximum energy.

REPAIR Restores some energy.

GHOST Makes your car invisible. You can drive through other cars without colliding.

SHIELD Protects you from damage until something hits you, or until it wears off.

Hint:If you want to save a power-up for later use, you can use the lock feature. When youve locked a power-up, a red circle appears around it. While the powerup is locked, you cant collect other power-ups.

PLAY MODES
TRACK FIGHTER You need three stars before you can access a new track. For example, after youve won SINGLE RACE on the Junkyard and Spacestation tracks, you should also play the TIME TRIAL and DYNAMITE TRIAL modes on each of the tracks before youll have enough stars to carry on. In SINGLE RACE, you battle your way against five other cars. You must win the race to get a star. In TIME TRIAL, you must beat the ghost car. If you can do this, youll get another star.

DYNAMITE TRIAL is similar to TIME TRIAL, except for one little detail: your car is loaded with explosives! If you hit anything there is a great chance your car will explode, and the race will finish the very same moment.
GRAND PRIX Before you can play the GRAND PRIX mode, you must have access to the first five tracks by playing the TRACK FIGHTER mode. In the GRAND PRIX mode, you race for money on five randomly chosen tracks. Your objective: to win enough cash, so that youll get access to a new car. The rules are clear - when GRAND PRIX results are presented, the one with the most cash will get a new car. CHAMPIONSHIP This is a tough one! Race on all 14 tracks, win them one-by-one, and carry on to the next. If you loose a race, you will loose one life. If you win a race, you will get one extra life. You start out with two lives.

MULTIPLAYER
SOME MODES ARE DIFFERENT IN MULTIPL AYER MODE MULTIPL TIPLA In MULTIPLAYER mode, the TRACK FIGHTER modes differs a little bit: You dont win any stars in the SINGLE RACE mode, since all cars are available. In TIME TRIAL, cars dont collide with each other (they appear as ghosts). DYNAMITE TRIAL is similar to TIME TRIAL, but you still carry explosives. To start a new multiplayer game, choose SELECT MODE from the main menu and MULTIPL TIPLA select the MULTIPL AYER option. A window will appear where you can Add or Remove players. There has to be 2 players or more before you can continue. When youre done here, click the Next button. CHOOSE A SCREEN LAYOUT A new window will appear where you can organize the screen layout. Four different screen layouts are available: 4 4 2 2 player player player player scaled split screen (best overview) cut split screen (faster for slow computers, but smaller overview) vertical split horizontal split

If 4 player split screen mode is selected in a 2 or 3 player game, additional screen(s) will be controlled by computer. MULTIPLAYER CONTROLS When you have selected your preferred screen layout, click the Next button. A controls setup window will appear. Players can control their cars using keyboard, joysticks, gamepads, or a combination of all. The mousebuttons can also be used, which could come in handy if all players use keys and there is little room left at the keyboard. SWITCH OFF, MANAGE, OR CREATE NEW MULTIPLAYER GAME Select MULTIPL AYER from the SELECT MODE menu again. A window appears and you MULTIPL TIPLA can choose if you want to switch to single player game, reconfigure your current multiplayer game, or create a new multiplayer game. Note: Best times (track records) are not saved in multiplayer mode.

TROUBLE SHOOTING
CD-ROM access error A blue screen CD-ROM access error might be a sympton of one of these problems: Dirty or scratched CD Removal of the CD from the computer while the game was running A CD-ROM drive having trouble reading the disc CD detection error If you get Insert CD errors, it is probably because you recently installed a new harddrive, CD-ROM drive, ZIP drive or similar. In this case, you must UNINSTALL Excessive Speed and then INSTALL it again from the CD drive you are using when playing games. The game is slow If you have a slower computer (133 MHz) you must set graphic detail to low, which you can easily do by pressing F4. Also try to switch of videocard synchronization by pressing F6 (this particularly applies to Matrox cards). You ofcourse also set these options from the CONFIGURATION menu. The game is jerky Make sure you have closed all running programs such as Microsoft Office Toolbar, printer drivers, ICQ, antivirus software or any other type of software which may be running in the background. The game pauses occasionally This is due to the fact that Windows simulates memory on the hard drive when not enough RAM is available. The only way to get around this problem is to have atleast 32MB of RAM installed in your computer.

ADVANCED SETTINGS
Excessive Speed advanced settings application allows players to change settings that affects low level display and sound routines. The application allows players to resolve certain compatibility problems. If the game works properly, leave all options unchanged (Automatic state). Excessive Speed autodetects most hardware and software related problems and always tries to behave properly. Display Mode This option is valid for DirectDraw driver only. By default game tries to use 640x400 High Color mode unless its not available. Some videocards may report this mode to be available when it is not. In such a case you should select 640x480 High Color. Display Method This option is valid for DirectDraw driver only. It determines how many buffers DirectDraw can use to increase Excessive Speed performance. Automatic option is strongly recommended. Color Format If you experience strange colors while playing, change this setting. Audio Format If youre having problem with distorted sound effects in the game, change this option. MMX Technology Excessive Speed autodetects MMX support by default. However, it is theoretically possible that MMX code does not work even if MMX support is detected, then you must manually turn off MMX support by setting this option to Disabled.
