CHAPTER I

Background of the Study

An artificial intelligence-based chatbot, ChatGPT, was launched in November 2022 and is

capable of generating cohesive and informative human-like responses to user input. This rapid

review of the literature aims to enrich our understanding of ChatGPT’s capabilities across subject

domains, how it can be used in education, and potential issues raised by researchers during the first

three months of its release (i.e., a December 2022 to February 2023). A search of the relevant

databases and Google Scholar yielded 50 articles for content analysis (i.e., open coding, axial coding,

and selective coding). The findings of this review suggest that ChatGPT’s performance varied across

subject domains, ranging from outstanding (e.g., economics) and satisfactory (e.g., programming) to

unsatisfactory (e.g., mathematics). Although ChatGPT has the potential to serve as an assistant for

instructors (e.g., to generate course materials and provide suggestions) and a virtual tutor for students

(e.g., to answer questions and facilitate collaboration), there were challenges associated with its use

(e.g., generating incorrect or fake information and bypassing plagiarism detectors). Immediate action

should be taken to update the assessment methods and institutional policies in schools and

universities. Instructor training and student education are also essential to respond to the impact of

ChatGPT on the educational environment.

According to Fitria (2021) that the technology was developed to facilitate human activities

and productivity. Artificial Intelligence or artificial intelligence is a technology that can make

computer systems, software, and even robots work and 'think' like humans. A.I. is a human

intelligence simulation based on computers and designed to function as human beings (Fitria, 2021).

Some answer using humans and utilize machines to automatically respond to questions presented by

humans (Maitri, 2019). The popularity of Artificial Intelligence continues to increase across

numerous industrial platforms, with Chatbot technology becoming essential (Luo et al., 2019; Wei et

al., 2018). It is a software application that uses natural language processing (NLP) and deep learning

techniques to conduct text-based online chat conversations (Dharani et al., 2020).

Communication between a human and a computer has been of interest to numerous researchers for

decades (Thorat & Jadhav, 2020).

The purpose of this study was to explore the positive effect of ChatGPT on Information

Communication Technology Students English academic subject, by examining the factors that

contribute to the usage of ChatGPT, we hope to identify the effective way in using ChatGPT to

reduce potential risk. This study aims to provide insight on students on how to use chat GPT in an

effective way.

Statement of the Problem

While the educational potential of ChatGPT is recognized, a focused investigation is needed

to discern its specific positive influences on students' English academic subject. This research aims

to bridge the gap in understanding how ChatGPT can enhance language skills, engagement, and

overall achievement in English studies. Specifically, this seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondent?

a) Achiever student

b) High grades in English subject

2. Does ChatGPT boost vocabulary, grammar, and writing?

3. How can we use ChatGPT effectively in English learning?

Significance of the Study

The study on the positive effects of ChatGPT on ICT students' English academic subject

holds significance in elucidating the potential educational benefits of integrating AI-driven

conversational models into language learning. By examining the impact of ChatGPT on English

proficiency among ICT students, the research contributes valuable insights into innovative teaching

methods, fostering a deeper understanding of how AI technologies can enhance language skills

within specific academic domains.

Students

this study assessed the students about the strength of using ChatGPT and also provide them

the knowledge on how to use it I the right way to prevent any risk.

Teachers

By exploring this, teachers can gain insights into how integrating advanced language models

like ChatGPT can potentially enhance students' language skills within the context of information and

communication technology. This research could provide valuable information for educators to adapt

and optimize teaching methods, fostering a more effective learning environment.

Parents

The study holds significance as it sheds light on how the integration of ChatGPT positively

influences their children's English academic performance in the realm of information and

communication technology. Understanding the potential benefits can help parents appreciate the

evolving educational tools and technologies, allowing them to actively support and engage with their

children's learning experiences. This insight can empower parents to be more involved in their child's

education and make informed decisions about leveraging technology for improved language skills

Scope and Delimitation

The study primarily focuses on the positive effect of chat GPT on the student’s English

academic subject. The scope of this study covers all Grade 11 Information Communication

Technology students on Molave Vocational Technical School who use Chat GPT. This study had 40

respondents from the said track the researchers use survey questioners to conduct this study, this

research was conducted before the end of the first semester.

Conceptual Framework

Despite the growing popularity of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in

education, ICT students often face challenges in mastering English language skills (Yanus & Lubis,

2009). This can hinder their academic success and limit their career prospects. ChatGPT, a large

language model with advanced capabilities in natural language processing, offers a potential solution

to these challenges. By integrating ChatGPT into English language learning for ICT students, we can

address the limitations of traditional methods and create a more engaging, personalized, and effective

learning experience (Dwivedi, 2023).

ChatGPT is a series of popular generative AI chatbots developed and maintained by OpenAI. The

large language models (LLMs) that support earlier chatbot models were unimodal and could only

process and generate text.

Artificial intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially

computer systems. Specific applications of AI include expert systems, natural language processing,

speech recognition and machine vision.

Information Communication Technology (ICT) is defined as a diverse set of technological tools

and resources used to transmit, store, create, share or exchange information.
