Gravity Force Lab
Gravity Force Lab
Introduction:
Newton's law of universal gravitation states that a particle attracts every other particle in the universe using a
force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of
the distance between their centers.
Objective:
Students will identify the relationship impacting gravitational attraction between two objects.
Procedure:
1. Using your iPad scan the QR code in the top right corner you will be taken to the PHET Interactive
Gravity Force Lab. Or if you cannot scan the QR code use the following internet address to get to the
site. https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/legacy/gravity-force-lab
2. Once it opens follow the steps below and fill in the data table as you make the changes.
3. Move m1 center to “0”, move m2 center to “3”.
4. Set m1 = 10kg, set m2 = 10kg. Record force in data table for test 1. (Record only the non-zero digits to
the right of the decimal point as a whole number.)
5. Leave m1 = 10kg, set m2 = 20kg. Record force in data table for test 2. (Record only the non-zero digits
to the right of the decimal point as a whole number.)
6. Leave m1 = 10kg, set m2 = 30kg. Record force in data table for test 3. (Record only the non-zero digits
to the right of the decimal point as a whole number.)
7. Set m1 = 10kg, set m2 = 10kg. Leave m1 center on “0”, move m2 center to “2”. Record force in data
table for test 4. (Record only the non-zero digits to the right of the decimal point as a whole number.)
8. Move m2 to “4”. Record force in data table for test 5. (Record only the non-zero digits to the right of
the decimal point as a whole number.)
9. Move m2 to “6”. Record force in data table for test 6. (Record only the non-zero digits to the right of
the decimal point as a whole number.)
