Aviation Industry in India

There has never been a better time for the aviation industry. While the global outlook is
encouraging, the aviation scenario in India looks promising. With the introduction of more
airports and the need to address business needs, the propensity among Indians to fly has
only increased. A few statistics only reiterate the tremendous growth potential of this
industry namely:

 International air traffic in India saw faster growth than domestic air traffic in 2023-
24. The international air traffic in the country stood at 69.7 million passengers in
2023-24, recording a 22.5 percent year-on-year (YoY) growth. In 2018-19, a total of
69.5 million air passengers travelled internationally (1)
 The domestic air traffic in India stood at 153.4 million passengers in 2023-24,
reflecting a 13.46 percent year-on-year (YoY) growth. In 2018-19, a total of 137.6
million air passengers traveled domestically (1)
 During financial year 2023, the total cargo volume carried by domestic airlines in
India was around 893 thousand metric tons (2)
 Shipments in and out of Indian airports were up 7% year on year, to 3.4m tons in
fiscal year 2023-24 that ended in March, according to new data from the Airport
Authority of India (AAI) (3)
 The Government of India has an ambitious plan of augmenting the number of
airports to 300 by the year 2047
 The interim budget of 2024 laid out ambitious plans of doubling the number of
airports to 149 and increasing the number of new air routes to 517(4)

With a rising population and a significant part of them being millennials — India's median
age being 28 years — the aviation sector is poised for tremendous growth. The
government's UDAN scheme, having operationalized 459 routes by December 2023,
further highlights the growth of the aviation sector and the continued thrust on this industry
through various initiatives.

Pilots, Navigators & Flight Attendants

When you think of a commercial flight, the pilots and flight attendants are the primary crew
members, ensuring your journey is both safe and comfortable.

Pilots

Pilots are the skilled professionals responsible for operating commercial aircraft. Their
primary duty is to fly the plane safely from its point of origin to its destination. Airline
companies hire only those pilots who have the necessary licenses and meet a minimum
requirement of flight time experience. This ensures that only the most qualified individuals
are entrusted with the safety of passengers.

Navigators

Historically, navigators were an essential part of the flight crew. They operated radio and
navigation equipment, plotted the aircraft's course, calculated distances, and determined
the speed and altitude necessary to assist the pilot. However, with advancements in
technology, modern aircraft have phased out the role of navigators. Today, systems such

Due Diligence

While the Aviation Industry always welcomes enthusiastic people with open arms, it is
necessary to do due diligence before you decide to pursue any course or qualifications
that could be a steppingstone to the aviation world

1. Choice of Institute- Check their credentials and what their standing is. Go through
their website. Look for their affiliations and ensure that due diligence is performed
prior to signing up.

if the course is likely to provide you with the value you seek. Contrarily there may be
institutes that charge on the higher side but provide quality courseware and training
3. Affiliation- Though it is not necessary, look for institutes that are certified by IATA,
ICAO, DGCA, NSDC, State Skill Missions or any credible certification body etc.
4. Choose the right course- Understand if your interest lies in a specific area of the
aviation industry and seek courses that teach you those skills. Quite a few students
tend to choose courses purely based on peer pressure or just because their friends
have decided to take a course. Your interest rather than your friends’ interest
should be a key driver
5. Placement Record- Look at the placement record of the institutions. Will they
provide placement assistance?
6. Choose a mentor- Look for any common friends, senior people in the industry to
understand about the industry, courses etc. and what you will gain by enrolling for
such courses. They can also provide you with the overall picture of the industry.
7. Leverage social media – Be an active part of professional social media platforms
like LinkedIn. Connect with Industry influencers, leaders, recruiters and highlight
the value you can bring to the table. Nurture your relationship over a period,
highlight your thought leadership in the industry and consciously avoid the pitfall of
seeking employment with your connection immediately on connecting with them. It
sends wrong signals.

The key to success in any industry is the passion with which you approach it, and the
aviation industry is no different. I would like to wish all students who wish to explore the
aviation industry the very best.

“Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes
turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to
return.” – Leonardo da Vinci
