RECAP – IN ON AT

When to use in, on or at?

Estas tres palabritas son capaces de meter en más de un lío a los estudiantes de inglés, y eso que su
uso más habitual es para referirnos a algo tan corriente como el tiempo y el lugar. Cuando necesites
decidirte por una u otra, en vez de pensar “¿Cómo diría yo esto en español?” (que en otras
ocasiones sí puede ser una buena estrategia), te aconsejo pararte a pensar en cómo de general o
específico es el tiempo o el lugar al que se refiere la frase.

Preposicion de tiempo – IN

• Numero de semanas, meses, años:


in three weeks, in two months, in four years
• Meses: in January
• Años: in 1981, in 2021, in 1995
• Décadas: in the 80’s, in the 90’s
• Siglos: in the 20th century
• Partes del dia: in the morning / afternoon / evening (! at night !)
• Estaciones del año: in summer / winter / automn / spring

Preposicion de tiempo – ON
• Dias de la semana:
on Monday, on Mondays, on the weekend
• Días especiales con la palabra “day”:
on Christmas Day, on New Year’s Day /Eve
• Fechas concretas:
on April 1st, on June 5th

Preposicion de tiempo – AT
• Horas:
at 8.30pm, at quarter past eleven, at ten to three
• Dias festivos sin la palabra „Day“:
Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving
Particularity:
US English:
se dice on the weekend
UK English:
se dice at the weekend
 Al final ambas formas son válidas

Preposicion de lugar – IN
• Ciudades:
in Medellin, in Paris, in London
• Paises:
in Colombia, in the US, in Germany
• Continentes:
in Africa, in Europe, in Asia
• Partes de un pais, region, ciudad:
in the south of France, in Cundinamarca, in my neighborhood
• ! Medio de transporte !:
in the/a car, in the/a taxi

Preposicion de lugar – ON
• Calles:
on Oxford Street, on fifth Avenue
• Lugares concretos:
on the corner of Oxford Street and fifth Avenue
on the roof, on the ground
• Indicar dirección: on the left, on your right, on the left-hand-side
• ! Medio de transporte !: on the/a train / bus / airplane / bike / skateboard / foot

Preposicion de lugar – at
• Direcciones completas:
at 10, Downing Street
• Lugares concretos de pueblos y ciudades:
at school, at university, at the barber, at the Eiffel Tower, at the airport, at the train station…
• Lugares conocidos:
at my friend‘s house, at Bernie‘s (the restaurant), at work,
at my office

IN or AT? (lugar)
Profe, como puedo decir: “Estoy en mi oficina”?
I’m in my office. / I’m at my office.
En la 1ra frase indicamos que estamos dentro de la oficina, probablemente en su puesto de trabajo.
En la 2da indicamos que estamos en la oficina de manera general, sin precisar si estamos en su
puesto de trabajo o tomándose un café con un colega en la sala de descanso…
