Okay class so the quoted text in the given picture is an example of Direct
Speech because it is enclosed with a quotation marks.
Let us have another picture!

Who is in the picture? New elected

President Bongbong
Very Good! Marcos

In the given text what did you notice?

Very good! Quotation marks.

The given text is the exact word of Bongbong Marcos, and what do we
called when the text is being quoted and when the text is coming from Direct speech.
the exact words of a person?

Very Good! now do you have any idea on what is Direct speech? Yes ma’am

Alright now let us define what is Direct Speech.

DIRECT SPEECH

Everybody please read!

o repeats the exact words of the person used, or how we

remember their words
o It is often enclosed in quotation marks so that the reader
understands that the quoted text is the speaker’s original
narrative.

Okay so based on the definition of Direct speech what could be the clue
for us to easily determine the Direct speech? Enclosed with a
quotation marks and
also when it is the
exact words of the
Very Good! speaker

Always remember that Direct speech is the exact words of the speaker
and enclosed with a quotation mark.

Did you understand what is Direct speech?

Yes Ma’am.
Let’s proceed to indirect speech, I will present a video and please listen
and observe carefully.

Who is in the video?

A reporter
What is she doing?
Reporting
Alright, in the given video the reporter reports the idea of wheather
bureau, she reports the weather from the result coming from the
wheather bureau for us to be aware on what is happening in our country
and to other country.

The video that I presented is an example of Indirect Speech

For you to further know about Indirect speech

Let us define Indirect speech.

INDIRECT SPEECH

Everybody please read!

o It is also known as reported speech.

o It is when you report someone else’s statement in your own
words without any change in the meaning of the statement and it
uses “that.”
o speech which tells you what someone said, but does not use the
person's actual words

alright ! so indirect speech is when we are going to relay someone’s idea

to another person but the thoughts of the speaker will remain and when
we are going to report someone’s statements we are going to use “that”

So now based on the definition can you differentiate Direct and Indirect
Speech?
Yes Waffah! The difference
between the Direct
and indirect speech
is that in direct
speech always
enclosed by a
Quotation mark while
indirect speech is
reporting the exact
words of the speaker
without any change.
Very good!
Yes ma’am!
Did you understand now what is Indirect speech?

Okay class in the given example what is now our first -Person Pronoun?

Yes Arumpac?

Very good!

Our first-Person Pronoun is “I” so we need to change it according to the

subject.
She
So, in the given example what is now our subject?

Very good!

So according to the rules we need to change our first-Person pronoun “I”

according to the subject since our subject is pronoun “she” pronoun “I”
became “she” when we write it in the reported speech.

So, class in the given example what is now our Third-Person Pronoun?

Since “He” is our Third-Person Pronoun we need to use the same

pronoun when we write it in reported speech.

So, the pronoun “He” remains Pronoun “He”.

Always remember class when we use the third Person Pronoun we do

not need to change the pronoun in converting to indirect speech. Yes Ma’am.

Did you understand the Third Person Pronoun?

 Changes in verbs

Let’s talk about first in the tenses of verb

 If the reporting speech is in Present tense or Future tense,

then No change is required to be made in the verb of reported
clause. This verb could be in any tense i.e present, past, or
future.

To further understand let’s have an example

IS: He says that she was not writing a letter to her brother

In the given sentence what is now the reporting speech?

Present tense
Very Good!

Is it a past tense or present tense or future tense?

alright, since “says “is in present form our verb in reported clause will not
be change when we write it in indirect speech.

The verb in our reported clause “was” will not be changed since our
reporting speech is in present form.
Always remember that when our reporting speech is in present form our
verb in reported clause will remain when we write it in indirect speech. Yes Ma’am.
