Quarter 1 – Learning Activity Sheet 2: The Research

Topic and Research Title for HUMSS Students

This worksheet was designed with you in mind. This was written
specifically to meet your needs as a senior high school student-
researcher. This leads you through the process of understanding concepts
of quantitative research. This also leads you through the basic elements
of research which are essential for good research practices. This
introduces identifying the inquiry and stating the problem of your study.
As pointed out in the previous module, the research topic is not
something that should be considered without any valid reasons. Hence,
this module helps you make a final decision on your research topic, and
helps you make a self- reflection on the things that you need to consider
in constructing your research title. It also emphasizes the importance of
specifying research titles. This also provides you different tasks to assess
your understanding on the topic.
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:
a. discuss the guidelines in choosing a topic, topics to be avoided and
sources of research topics;
b. value the importance of narrowing down a research topic by
presenting specific research topics; and
c. formulate their own research title based on their chosen topic.

Lecture on the Research Topics and Research Titles

Research Topic
The research topic is the subject or area to be investigated by the
researcher. It is the beginning of a research work and may also be referred
to as the general problem. Research topics are varied and numerous and
would largely depend upon the researcher’s preference. Nevertheless,
topics chosen should be researchable – meaning that the knowledge and
information about it can be supported by evidence that are observable,
factual, and logical.

 Guidelines in Choosing a Research Topic

1. Interest in the subject matter–may be caused by the researcher’s

rich background knowledge about the subject, its novelty, meaning.
Real interest pushes a researcher to investigate or inquire with
enthusiasm.
2. Availability of information – availability of information is needed to
provide evidence and support to the study which comes from
various forms of literature like books, journals, among others.
LYFJSHS | Practical Research 2| Quantitative Research 2

3. Timeliness and relevance of the topic – The topic is relevant if it

yields results that are instrumental in societal improvement. It is
timely if it is related to the present.
4. Limitations on the subject–links chosen topic with course
requirements depending in what was prescribed by the teacher.
5. Personal resources – includes research abilities in terms of financial
standing, health condition, mental capacity, needed facilities, and
time allotment to complete the research.

 Research Topics to be Avoided

1. Controversial topics – topics that depend greatly on the writer’s

opinion, which may tend to be biased or prejudiced
2. Highly technical subjects – topics that require an advanced study,
technical knowledge, and vast experience
3. Hard-to investigate subjects – no available materials to support the
study or materials are not up-to-date
4. Too broad subjects – prevents the researcher from giving a
concentrated or in-depth analysis of the subject matter of the paper
5. Too narrow subjects – too limited or too specific subjects
6. Vague subjects–unclear or unfocused topic that has no definite
problem

 Sources of Research Topics

1. Pressing issues of an individual, organization or society - problems

encountered
2. Wide Reading – from books, journals, magazines,
3. Social Networking – from netizens
4. Replication – from other theses or dissertations
5. Lectures, Talks, Seminars – breeding ground of ideas
6. Gray Areas – very little is known about the subject.

For additional information on choosing a research topic, kindly visit the

YouTube video entitled, 5 Things to Consider when Choosing a Research
Topic (link: https://youtu.be/PdoAYIig47k).

Research Title

A research title, or a research project, is a product of real-world

observations, dilemmas, wide reading, selective viewing (television
programs, films, documentaries), meaningful interactions with others, and
deep reflection.

The title of the research is the research problem or inquiry in

capsule form. Great care must be taken in the formulation of research
title. It must clearly reflect the topic of investigation and it must be
original, clear, concise, and specific.

NURTURE /

The introduction section or chapter of a research study typically

begins with the background of the study. The primary purpose of the
background is to provide the reader with the context and explain the
circumstances that led to the study. It can discuss briefly the specific
problem or situation, conflict of ideas, gaps in knowledge, literature, or
theories that caught your attention as a researcher and compelled you to
select your particular research topic. It answers the question “Why are
you studying this particular research topic?”

The background of the study is an overview of the research and

explains the purpose of conducting the study. It provides pieces of
information that are important or essential to understand the main body
of the research investigation.

Background information identifies and describes the history and

nature of a well-defined research problem with reference to the existing
literature. Background information in your introduction should indicate
the root of the problem being studied, its scope, and the extent to which
previous studies successfully investigate the problem, noting, in
particular, where gaps exist that your study attempts to address.
LYFJSHS | Practical Research 2| Quantitative Research 9

Introductory background information differs from a literature review in

the places the research problem in proper context rather than thoroughly
examining pertinent literature.

Background information expands upon the key points stated in

your introduction but is not the main focus of the paper. Sufficient
background information helps your reader determine if you have an
understanding of the research problem being investigated and promotes
confidence in the overall quality of your analysis and findings.

Moreover, it also locates or situates your study in the context of

your specific field and other related fields. It should focus on the
importance and validity of the problem, the general orientation to the
problem area, a brief rationale to justify the problem.

It includes:
1. discussion of the problem in general and the specific situations
observed and experienced by the researcher (macro to micro
approach);
2. concepts or ideas related to the problem including clarification
of important terminologies; and
3. discussion of the existing or present conditions and what is
aimed to be the future or the gap to be filled in by the research.
