Convection
Q.1. Write a note on thermal boundary layer and hydrodynamic boundary layer

Q.2. Show by Dimensional analysis, Nusselt number is function of Reynolds numbers

and Prandtl number for the case of Forced convection

Q.3. show by Dimensional analysis, Nusselt number is function of Grashoff numbers

and Prandtl number for the case of Natural convection

Q.4. Write various empirical correlations for Forced convection.

Q.5. Write correlations for single horizontal cylinders, vertical cylinders & vertical
plates, in natural convection

Q.6. Air at 2 atm and 2000C is heated as it flows at velocity of 12 m/s through a tube with
the diameter of 3 cm. A constant heat flux condition is maintained at the wall and the
wall temperature is 200C above the air temperature all along the length of the tube.
Calculate – (i) The heat transfer per unit length of the tube.

(ii) The increase in bulk temperature of air over a length of tube.

Properties of air at 2000C are Pr = 0.681, µ=2.57*10-5 Kg/ms,

K= 0.0386 W/mK, Cp= 1.025 Kj/Kg.K, You may use

NNud = 0.023 (Re)0.8 (Pr)0.4

Q.7 Explain Momuntum Diffusivity and Thermal Diffusivity

Q.8. State Newton’s law of cooling

Q.9. Write significance of all Dimensionless Number

Q.10. Explain types of Convection

Q.11. Explain (i)Thermal Conductivity (ii)Electrical Analogy of heat Conduction

(iii)Thermal Insulation and Optimum thickness of Insulation

Q.12.steam at 320 degree C flows in a cast iron pipe (k=80 W/m0C) whose inner and
outer diameter are D1=5cm and D2=5.5cm resp. the pipe is covered with 3cm thick glass
wool insulation with k=0.05W/m2 0 C. Heat is lost to surrounding at 50C by Natural
convection and radiation with the combined heat transfer coefficient h2 = 18 W/m20C,
Taking the heat transfer coefficient inside the pipe to be 60W/m2 0 C, determine the rate of
heat loss from the steam per unit length of pipe. Also determine the temp. drop across the
pipe shell and the insulation .
