4 Function of Various Machineries in ER :

1) Main Propulsion Engine – is connected to the

Propeller via Shafting. Propels the Ship in Ahead or
Astern Direction through the water. Could be Steam,
Diesel, LNG, Bio-Fuel, Electric, Gas.
2) Auxiliary Engines – are the Prime Movers
connected to Alternators via shafting to generate
Electricity on board. Could be Diesel or Steam or Gas.
3) Boilers – for providing steam to power Turbines,
heat various Oils, Cargoes, heat Waters such as for
Domestic use, Galley use or for Engines, heat
Accommodation in cold weathers.
4) Air Compressors – are used to press up Air Bottles.
Without any Air, the Ship would soon become a ‘Dead
Ship’. Air is used to start Engines, for General Service, for
Boiler Combustion, for remote Fire Fighting purpose to
shut off Fuel Valves on Tanks, for Powering Tools, for
charging Hydrophores, for fighting Oil Pollution, for
Control Air of Automation
5) Purifiers – are used for purifying Fuel Oils which
are consumed in Engines and Boilers, and for purifying
Engine Lube Oils to maintain them in healthy condition.
6) Pumps – Various Pumps are for various purposes,
Sea Water Pumps are used for cooling Air, Lube Oil,
Engine Cooling Water through Coolers & Condensers
Fresh Water-Cooling Water Pumps are used for
cooling the Engines,
Lube Oil Pumps are used for lubricating Engines,
Transfer Pumps are used for transferring Fuel, Diesel,
Lube, Waste Oils.
Vacuum Pumps are used to create Vacuum in
Condenser for Turbines.
Ejector Pump is used to create Vacuum in Fresh
Water Generator.
Condensate Pumps are used to maintain Condenser
level.
Bilge Pumps are used to transfer Bilges.
Fire Pumps for fighting fire, tank cleaning.
Feed water Pumps are used to supply water to
Boilers.
Fuel Oil Supply and Circulating Pumps are used to
pump Fuel in Engines.
Fuel Oil Burning Pumps are used to supply Fuel to
Boilers.
7) Inert Gas System – for Inerting and Gas Freeing
Cargo Tanks safely.
8) Sewage Treatment Plant – for treating waste water
from Accommodation and Galley and Hospitals.
9) Fresh Water Generator – for making Distilled water
from sea water at sea.
10) Waste Oil Incinerator – for burning Sludge and
Waste oil.
11) Bilge Oil Separator 15 ppm – for pumping out
environment friendly Bilges into sea.
12) Domestic Fresh Water – has Hydrophores and
Pumps to pump water for Accommodation and Galley
purposes. Drinking Water is led through an UV Sterilizer
to kill harmful Bacteria and add Minerals to the water.
13) Ballast Water Monitoring Systems – monitors
Ballasting and Deballasting of Tanks.
14) Remote Control Valves Operating System – an
Hydraulic system for operating Ballast and Cargo Valves.
15) Air Conditioning – for cooling and heating the
Accommodation.
16) Fridge System – for maintaining Meat, Fish,
Veggies and Dairy products in cold rooms.
17) Coolers and Heaters and Condensers – are used
for Heat Exchange process either to raise the
temperature or to cool down the temperature.
18) Steering Gear – though it may not be in the
Engine Room, it is nevertheless a part of Machinery and
is responsible for moving the Rudder which in turn
rotates the Ship.
19) Emergency Generator – Located outside of the
engine room. To supply Power during Blackout or when
carrying maintenance on Main Switchboard.
20) Emergency Fire Pump – to supply water in case
Main Fire Pumps are made redundant due to say Black-
out or a Fire in Engine Room.
