TOPIC: CH 5 Physical and Chemical Changes DATE:28/08/2024

Define:
1. Physical change: A change in which a substance undergoes a change in its physical
properties like shape, size, colour or state but no new substance is formed is called
physical change.
2. Chemical change: A change in which one or more new substances are formed are
called chemical change.
3. Galvanisation: The process of depositing a layer of zinc on iron is called
galvanization.
4. Crystallization: The process to obtain the crystals of pure substance from its
solution is called crystallization.
Answer the following:
1. What are included in the physical properties of a substance?
Ans. The shape, size, colour and state of a substance are included in the physical
properties of an object.
2. What is rusting of iron?
Ans. A piece or an article of iron when comes in contact with oxygen of air in the
presence of moisture forms brownish iron oxide is called rusting.
3. What happens if the magnesium ribbon is brought near the candle for some time?
Ans. If the magnesium ribbon is brought near the candle flame it burns with brilliant
white light and it leaves behind powdery ash.
4. What would be the effect on an iron blade when it is kept in copper sulphate
solution for sometime?
Ans. When iron blade is kept in copper sulphate solution the blue coloured solution
turns green due to the formation of iron sulphate and blade has brown coloured
coating of copper.
5. State four substances which are found in crystalline form.
Ans. Copper sulphate, sugar, common salt, alum.
6. One or more new substances are produced in a chemical reaction. In addition to
this, which phenomena are also seen?
Ans.1. Heat, light and sound may be given off or absorbed.
2. A gas may be formed.
3. a colour change may take place
4. A change in odour may take place
7. Explain the importance of ozone layer.
Ans. Ozone layer protects us from the harmful ultraviolet radiations, which come from
the sun. it absorbs this radiation and breaks down to oxygen. Ozone layer acts as a
natural shield against ultraviolet radiation.
Give two points of differences:

are formed.
3. They are generally reversible 3. They are generally irreversible
