I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:


a. Describe the addition of integers using materials such as number line;
b. performs the addition of integers;
c. solves word problems involving addition of integers using appropriate strategies and tools.

A. Preliminary Activity

1. Opening Prayer

2. Greetings

Good morning class! Good morning Ma’am Sida!

3. Classroom Management

Kindly please! Arrange and align your chairs (Students arrange and align their chairs)
properly. (students take their seats)

4. Checking of Attendance (students will begin to count with their attendance
number)

counting with your attendance number.

had yesterday. I will give you a card then you are
going to solve the solving problem that was
written in it.

B. Lesson Proper

Yesterday, the temperature in a certain area was


-24 C. Today, it’s temperature increased by 15 C.
What is today’s temperature?

We can put this in the number sentence as -14 +


25 = n. This is what we call Adding integers.

Adding integers is the process of finding


the sum of two or more integers. It may result in
an increase or a decrease in value, depending on
whether the integers are positive or negative or a
mixture.

To better understanding how addition of integers


work, we can use a number line to visualize this.

We mark the 1st integer on the number line. In


our example, -4 + 5.

-4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4 5

Then we add 5 to it. This means that we move 5


places to the right since 5 is a positive integer.

-4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4 5

The number line shows that (-4) + 5 = 1

Rules in Adding Integers:

 To add integers with the same signs, add


the numbers and copy the sign.
 To add integers with different signs,
ignore the signs then subtract the smaller
number from the bigger number and copy
the sign of the bigger number.
 The sum of two the same number having
opposite signs is equal to zero.

Another example.

1.) 4 + -7 = -3
2.) 5 – 4 = 1
3.) 5- (-4) = 9
4.) (-5) – 4 = -9
5.) (-5) – (-4) = -1

C. Generalization

Always remember that when adding


integers of the same sign, we add their absolute
values, and give the result the same sign. When
adding integers of the opposite signs, we take
their absolute values, subtract the smaller from
the larger, and give the result the sign of the
integers with the larger absolute value.

D. Application

4.) (-15) – 12
