Module 3. L 3 Internet Protocol

(IP) Address
MEMORY VERSE:

1 Corinthians 6:12
“All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be
brought under the power of any.”

Enabling Outcomes: (MELC)

Based on the curriculum guide (CG), the student should be able to:

 Understand Internet Protocol Address;

 Differentiate IPv4 and IPv6;
 Appreciate the role played by the IP address.

Concepts (Generalization)
The Internet Protocol Address
Since the Internet is comprised of a global network of computers, there must be a way to identify each
computer and device connected. That's where Internet Protocol (or IP) comes in. Everything connected to the
Internet has an IP address. That includes computers, servers, cell phones and any other equipment.

All of these have a unique IP address in order to connect to the Internet. The IP address allows each computer
connected to the Internet to be identified.

The IP address will take the form of four sets of numbers. Each number must be between 0 and 255. For
example, 12.125.30.102 is a sample of an IP address.
2

An IP address can be static or dynamic. To identify the two, the static IP address is the address, which is
a permanent internet address while a dynamic IP is a temporary internet address assigned to a computer
or device each time it accesses the internet. The four numbers in an IP address are used to identify a
particular network and a host on that network. Internet address has three classes and these are:

Class A - supports 16 million hosts on each of 126 networks

Class B - supports 65,000 hosts on each of 16,000 networks
Class C - supports 254 hosts on each of 2 million networks

To view your IP address, use the command line tool then at the command prompt, just type ipconfig or
IPCONFIG to display all current TCP/IP network configurations value and refreshes your DHCP or
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol and DNS or the Domain Name System settings.

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority or ANA are the responsible for managing the IP addresses
and has the overall responsibility for the Internet Protocol (IP) address pool, and by the Regional
Internet Registries (RIRs) to which the large blocks of addresses are distributed by IANA.

“The RIRs manage, distribute, and publicly register IP addresses and related Internet number resources,
such as Autonomous System Numbers (ASN) and reverse Domain Name System (DNS) delegations
within their respective regions. They do this according to policies which are developed within their
respective regional communities, through open and bottom-up processes.”

The IPv4 and IPv6 are the two versions in use today. Both the internet and many corporate networks are
still using the original IPv4 protocol, but this protocol is only allowed for 232 addresses. This, coupled
with how addresses were allocated, led to a situation where there would not be enough unique addresses
for all devices connected to the internet.
3

Be Active (Exercises/Activities)
Underline the correct answer inside the parentheses: (2 points each)

1. An IP address can be (static or dynamic, private or public).

4

Ignite (Evaluation)
Watch this video from CISCO to improve your knowledge about IP address and answer the following:

1. What are the two parts of an IP address?

2. What is a bit?

3. A period is used to separate from one numbers to the others and that is called____________.

IFL (Integration of Faith & Learning)

Technology cannot be simply rejected, demonized, or even mindlessly accepted
and used. For your technological usage, you need to do so discerningly, and with
an open hand knowing that technology is not the solution to every problem—but it
is a vehicle to share the gospel and do good for others.
