GRAMMAR
1. V～ことにする
To decide on…
ことにする (casual)
Verb (dictionary form) + ことにします ( more polite)
Verb ない form ことにしている (current)
ことにしています (current polite)

E.g.行かないことにする I have decided not to go


E.g. それから毎日ランニングをすることにする I’ve decided to go running every day from
now on.
E.g. タバコをやめることにした。 I decided to quit smoking
E.g. 夏休みに友達とおきなわに旅行することにします。 I have decided to go to Okinawa over
the summer break with my friends.

2. V～ことにきめる
To decide on…

V plain form + ことにきめる

E.g. いつ日本に行くことにきめたの？ When have you decided to go to Japan?


E.g. 車を買うことに決めた。 I decided to buy a car

Note: Both ことにする and ことにきめる mean to decide, and usage is almost identical. However, ことにする is
more idiomatic, and so commonly used in colloquial speech. ことにきめる is suitable for more formal
speech, or for more important decisions.

Another difference is that the usage of ことにする to mean 'I hereby decide to do' is not possible with 決
める.

3. V～て＋は だめ
Not allowed…, should not…

Verb in て form + だめ （です）

E.g. それを食べてはだめです。 You are not allowed to eat that.


E.g. それを使ってはだめです。 You are not allowed to use that.

4. V～たらいい
It would be nice if..., should, hope
Verb (plain) + と いい
Verb (た form) + ら

E.g. あなたが気にいるといいな。 I hope you like it


E.g. 見たらいいね。 I hope I can see it
E.g. あしたはれるといいな。 I hope the weather will be clear tomorrow
E.g. 旅行中は雨がふれないといいなあ。 I hope it doesn’t rain during our trip
E.g. いつか日本で出会えたらいいな。 I hope we can meet in Japanese one day.

5. V～たらいい（ですか）
What should I do? (Speaker seeking instruction from listener)
Verb (た form) + らいいですか

E.g. 駅まで行きたいんですが、どう行ったらいいですか I want to go to the station, but how do


I get there?
E.g. どうしたらいいですか。 What should I do?
E.g. 何を食べたらいいですか。What should I eat?

6. V～たらどう
Why don’t you…?
Verb (た form) + らどうですか

E.g. 一緒に来たらどうですか。 Why don’t you come together?


E.g. 先生に聞いてみたらどうですか？ Why don’t you try asking the teachers?
E.g. かれに電話したらどうですか。 Why don’t you try giving him a call?

7. N のほかに + V ない
Except for….
No other, nothing else
N のほかに + V ない
E.g. 週末は宿題がたくさんあったので、勉強の他（に）は何もできなかった 。

Because I had lots of homework on the weekend, I could do anything else except for study

E.g.ほかに言うことはなかった。There was nothing else to say.
