A. What is “CAE”
- Certificate in Advanced English or Cambridge English: Advanced is a language
exam that confirms your knowledge of English as C1 (Advanced). It is normally
abbreviated as CAE.
- C1 Advanced is a general English qualification that shows that your English is of
the standard expected of a professional business person or an undergraduate
university student.
- Level of qualification:

Advanced = C1 on the Common European Framework.

- In terms of the duration of the CAE certificate, until now, this certificate is valid
permanently in many countries around the world However, in Vietnam,
depending on the local unit, the regulations on the duration of this certificate have
certain differences. Normally, units will accept CAE certificates with a validity of
1.5 – 2 years from the date of issuance.

B. Why you should take a CAE test

- You should take C1 Advanced if you want to prove to employers or universities


that you can communicate confidently in English in professional and high-level
academic situations.

C1 Advanced is one of the most popular English tests in the world:

 It is accepted by more than 9000 educational institutions, businesses, and


government departments around the world
 It is recognized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a confirmation of
language qualifications required to obtain a diplomatic rank
 It is recognized by the Ministry of National Education as a confirmation of
language qualifications of tour guides and tour leaders
 It is accepted by over 3,000 universities, colleges, employers, and
government departments around the world.

C. A CAE (C1 Advanced) qualification shows that you


can:
 Follow an academic course at the university level
 Communicate effectively at a managerial and professional level
 Participate with confidence in workplace meetings or academic tutorials and seminars
 Express yourself with a high level of fluency.

 Write complex reports and emails, and take notes in meetings or lectures
 Give presentations on complicated ideas in English
 Understand a variety of texts, from fiction to newspaper opinion pieces.
D. CAE Test Structure
The C1 Advanced exam consists of 4 parts. You will complete papers Reading and Use of
English, Writing, and Listening on the same day. The Speaking may be on a different day.
You do the speaking with two examiners and one other candidate.

CAE – READING & WRITING

1. Reading and Use of English:

You can deal confidently with different text types, such as fiction, newspapers, and
magazines. Test your use of English with different types of exercises that show how well you
can control your grammar and vocabulary.

The text may be from Newspapers and magazines, journals, books


(fiction and non-fiction), promotional and

Part 1: Multiple-choice cloze

This part has a text in which there are some numbered gaps, each of which represents a
word or phrase. After the text, there are four possible answers for each gap and you have to
choose the correct answer (A, B, C, or D).

There are 8 questions, and 1 mark for each correct answer.

You need to practice vocabulary, idioms, collocations, shades of meaning, phrasal verbs,
fixed phrases, etc.

Part 2: Open cloze

This part has a text in which there are some gaps, each of which represents one missing
word. You have to find the correct word for each gap.

There are 8 questions, and 1 mark for each correct answer.


You need to practice your Grammar and Vocab.

Part 3: Word formation

This part has a text containing eight gaps. Each gap represents a word. At the end of the line
is a ‘prompt’ word which you have to change in some way to complete the sentence
correctly.

There are 8 questions and 1 mark for each correct answer.


You need to practice your Vocab.

Part 4: Keyword transformations

Each question consists of a sentence followed by a ‘key’ word and a second sentence with a
gap in the middle. You have to use this keyword to complete the second sentence, in three
to six words, so that it means the same as the first sentence.

There are 6 questions and up to 2 marks for each correct answer.


You need to practice your Grammar, Vocab, and Collocation.

Part 5: Multiple-choice

This part has a text with some multiple-choice questions. For each question, there are four
options and you have to choose A, B, C, or D.

You need to read for detail, opinion, tone, purpose, main idea, implication, and attitude.
Part 6: Cross-text multiple matching

Four short texts with multiple-matching questions. You must read across all of the texts to
match a prompt to elements in the texts.

You have to practice your understanding, comparing opinions and attitudes across texts.

There are 4 questions and 2 marks for each correct answer.

Part 7: Grapped text

A single page of text with some numbered gaps which represent missing paragraphs. After
the text, there are some paragraphs which are not in the right order. You have to read the
text and the paragraphs and decide which paragraph best fits each gap.

You have to practice how to understand the structure and development of a text.

There are 6 questions and 2 marks for each correct answer.

Part 8: Multiple matching

A series of multiple-matching questions followed by a text or several short texts. You have
to match a prompt to elements in the text.

You need to practice your reading for specific information, details, opinions, and attitudes.

There are 10 questions and 1 mark for each correct answer.

Part 1: Compulsory question

You read a text, then write an essay based on points included in the text. You’ll be asked to
explain which of the two points is more important and to give reasons for your opinion.

There is one compulsory question and you have to write 200 - 260 words.
What do you have to do?
 Developing points as fully as possible to demonstrate a range of structures, vocabulary,
and language functions, such as evaluating, expressing opinions, hypothesizing,
justifying, and persuading.

Part 2: Situationally based writing task

You write a text from a choice of text types – letter/email, proposal, report, or review. To
guide your writing, you’ll be given information about context, topic purpose, and target
reader.
There are 3 tasks, from which you must choose one and you have to write 200 - 260 words.

What do you have to do?


 Writing the different types of text that could be included in the exam.
CAE Listening & Speaking Test
1. Requirements:
- The purpose of the Listening exam is to test your ability to follow and understand a range of spoken
materials, such as interviews, radio broadcasts, presentations, talks, and everyday conversations.

- The purpose of the Speaking exam is to show you can take part in a conversation by answering and
asking simple questions. Your Speaking test will be conducted usually face-to-face with one or two other
candidates and two examiners. One of the examiners (who could be online, examining remotely) talks to
you, and the other examiner listens. This makes your test more realistic and more reliable. Examiners
may use their mobile phones to enter marks using an app.

2. Format of the Listening test:

 Summary:
The C1 Advanced Listening paper has four parts. For each part, you have to listen to a recorded text or
texts and answer some questions. You hear each recording twice.

 Format:
Time allowed: About 40 minutes
A number of parts: 4
A number of questions: 30
Recordings may be from: Monologues: radio broadcasts, speeches, talks,
lectures, anecdotes, etc.; or interacting
speakers: radio broadcasts, interviews,
discussions, conversations, etc.

 Part 1, Multiple choice:


- The first part consists of three short extracts from conversations between interacting
speakers. There are two multiple-choice questions for each extract and you have to choose
A, B, or C.
- You’ll practice listening for feeling, attitude, opinion, purpose, function, agreement, course
of action, gist, detail, etc.
- There will be 6 questions in total and 1 marks per right answer.
 Part 2, Sentence completion:
- The second part will have a monologue lasting approximately 3 minutes. You have to
complete the sentences on the question paper with the missing information that you hear
on the recording.
- You’ll practice listening for specific information, and stated opinions.
- There will be 8 questions in total and 1 marks per right answer.
 Part 3, Multiple choice:
- The third part will have you listening to a conversation between two or more speakers for
approximately 4 minutes. You have to answer some multiple-choice questions by choosing
the correct answer from four options (A, B C, or D).
- You’ll practice listening for attitude, opinion, agreement, gist, feeling, speaker purpose,
function, and detail.
- There will be 6 questions in total and 1 marks per right answer.

 Part 4, Multiple matching:
- The fourth part comprises a series of five themed monologues of approximately 30 seconds
each. On the question paper, there are two tasks and for each task, you have to match each
of the five speakers to one of eight possible answers.
- You’ll practice listening for gist, attitude, opinion, main points, speaker purpose and feeling;
interpreting context.
- There will be 10 questions in total and 1 mark per right answer.

3. Format of the Speaking test:

 Summary:
The C1 Advanced Speaking test has four parts and you take it together with
another candidate.

There are two examiners. One of the examiners conducts the test (asks you
questions, gives you the paper with things to talk about, and so on). The other
examiner listens to what you say and takes notes.

 Format:

Time allowed: 15 minutes per pair of candidates.

 Part 1, Interview:

- There’ll be a conversation between the candidates and the interlocutor.


The examiner asks questions and you may have to give information about
your interests, studies, careers, etc.
- You’ll practice Giving information about yourself and expressing your
opinion about various topics.
- You’ll have two minutes to speak.
 Part 2, Long turn:

- The interlocutor gives you three pictures and asks you to talk about two
of them. You have to speak for 1 minute without interruption and the
interlocutor then asks the other candidate to comment on what you have
said for about 30 seconds. The other candidate receives a different set of
photographs and you have to listen and comment when they have
finished speaking. The questions you have to answer about your
photographs are written at the top of the page to remind you what you
should talk about.
- You’ll practice talking on your own about something: comparing,
describing, expressing opinions, speculating.
- You’ll have 1 minute to speak, plus a 30-second response from the
second candidate and vice versa.
 Part 3, Collaborative task:

- You’ll speak with the other candidate. The examiner gives you spoken
instructions with written prompts which are used in a discussion. You
have to talk with the other candidate for about 2 minutes (3 minutes for
groups of three) about the written prompts. After the discussion time, the
examiner will ask you another question which requires you to make a
decision. You have 1 minute to talk together and make the decision (2
minutes for groups of three).
- You’ll practice exchanging ideas, expressing and justifying opinions,
agreeing and/or disagreeing, suggesting, speculating, evaluating, reaching
a decision through negotiation, etc.
- You’ll have 3 minutes (a 2-minute discussion followed by a 1-minute decision-making task)

 Part 4, Discussion:
- You’ll further discuss with the other candidate based on the topics or issues raised in the
task in Part 3. The interlocutor asks each of you some questions and you discuss them with
the other candidate.
- You’ll practice expressing and justifying opinions, agreeing and/or disagreeing.
- You’ll discuss for 5 minutes.

E. CAE exam (C1 Advanced) results


The Cambridge English scale is used to report your CAE exam (C1 Advanced) results. You will
be scored separately for each of the four skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) and the
use of English. You will also receive an average overall score of these five scores to give you a
clear understanding of your English language proficiency. You will also be given a grade and
Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) level. The exam aims to
assess knowledge at CFPR Level C1. Additionally, you will be given a trustworthy evaluation at
levels C2, which is higher than C1, and B2, which is lower than C1. You will not be given a
certificate if your score falls between 142 and 159; but, it will be reported for C1 Advanced.
Although your Statement of Results will show your Cambridge English Scale.
