Women’s Forum

Maryam: I’m so excited! I finally got my driving

licence. It used to be impossible for women to get a
licence here in Saudi Arabia. We used to take taxis
everywhere and we needed permission from our
husbands, fathers or sons to travel alone. We still need
a man’s permission for some things, such as going
abroad. But things are changing now.
Carla: Wow, Maryam, that’s great news! Here in
Manchester, most women drive, and most men don’t
do anything without their wives’ permission. Ha ha!
I took some driving lessons when I was 18, but I never
passed the test. My husband drives the children to
school and does the shopping. I really want to learn to
drive, but I’m not confident enough.
Alma: I’ve got a driving licence, but I don’t drive very
much. I ride my bike everywhere. I live in Copenhagen,
one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world.
Lynda: I can’t imagine life without my car. I live quite
far from the city, in a small town in Texas. There isn’t
much public transport here. I learned to drive when I
was 17 and I got a job as a bus driver when I left
school. Now, I’m studying to be a mechanic. I want to
open a car repair business.
