EXPERIMENT NO: ...............

Name: ............................
Date: .............................

AIM: To study the variation of the image distance with the object distance in case of a convex lens
and determine its focal length by plotting a u-v graph.

APPARATUS: Optical bench with uprights and a convex lens

1 1 1
FORMULA USED: = −
f v u

DIAGRAM:

PROCEDURE:

1. Place a convex lens (secured in a lens holder) on an optical bench and find its rough focal length
by focussing a distant object on a white paper screen.
2. Fix the upright with convex lens and place two more uprights with needles on the optical bench,
one on each side of the lens.
3. Place the object needle very close to the rough focus so as to get a real and inverted image on
the other side of the lens.
4. Move the needle on the other side (image needle) till the parallax is removed between the image
needle and the image of the object needle. This gives the position of the image corresponding to
the object.
5. Find the position of the image for 5 -6 different positions of the object placed between
approximate F & 2F.
6. You will get 5 -6 more readings by reversing the values of u & v.
7. Keeping the sign convention in mind, plot the u – v graph in the 2nd quadrant.

GRAPH: f is determined by first drawing the angle
bisector from the origin and then dropping
the perpendicular from the point where it
meets the curve on the x & y axis. The foot of
the perpendicular form the origin is 2f and f is
half of the mean of OL & OM.

CALCULATIONS: To be done from u-v graph.

1  OL + OM 
f=  
2 2 

RESULT: The u-v graph for a convex lens is found to be a hyperbola in the second quadrant. The focal
length as determined from the u-v graph is ............

PRECAUTIONS & SOURCES OF ERROR:

1. The tips of the needles should be as high as the optical centre of the lens.
2. The uprights containing the lens & the needles should not be shaky.
3. The image needle should be viewed from a distance greater than 25 cm.
