Year 3 Units of Work

English: Students will gain a deeper understanding of the textual concepts of imagery, symbol and connotation and
characterisation. Through a study of the texts ‘Piano Fingers’ and ‘The Drummer Boy’ they will develop their understanding of
imagery, symbol and connotation and how authors use imagery and symbols in literature and identify how figurative language
can influence meaning. Students will experiment using salience and figurative language to create a multimodal text. Students will
make connections to characters in a text by composing a journal entry.
Maths: Maths will continue to be taught in 2 week cycles this year. Concepts will be revisited throughout the year to ensure
students are having plenty of opportunities to build their understanding and skills. Maths concepts covered this term include
representing numbers using place value, multiplicative relations, length, mass, additive relations and two-dimensional spatial
structure.
Year 4 Units of Work
English: Students will be learning about the textual concept of ‘characterisation’ and the supporting concept of ‘imagery, symbol
and connotation’. Through a close study of the mentor text, The Callers, they will learn about characterisation as the qualities
attributed to imagined characters, including their personality and emotional attributes. Students will examine excerpts from the
text that explore the author’s purpose in the development of characters and the various aspects of characterisation, such as
appearance, actions, words and thoughts. They will create written texts for imaginative purposes and enhance their understanding
of the textual concepts. Students will apply their understanding of characterisation to develop and present their own character in
the final part of the unit.
Maths: Maths will continue to be taught in 2 week cycles this year. Concepts will be revisited throughout the year to ensure
students are having plenty of opportunities to build their understanding and skills. Maths concepts covered this term include
representing numbers using place value, additive relations, multiplicative relations, two-dimensional spatial structure, geometric
measure, and mass.
Stage 2 Units of Work
History: This semester students will be studying the topic ‘First Contact’. This unit introduces world history and the movements
of people. Beginning with the history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, students examine European exploration and
colonisation in Australia and throughout the world up to the early 1800s. Students examine the impact of exploration on other
societies, how these societies interacted with newcomers, and how these experiences contributed to their cultural diversity

Science: Stage 2 will investigate the material world. This unit focuses on investigating how different properties of materials affect
their suitability for products. Students develop a design solution to an identified need or opportunity, using a variety of materials.
Stage 2 of this strand develops students’ knowledge and understanding of the properties and performance of materials and the
material sciences.
CAPA: Music will be taught in Mandarin this term. Students will learn to sing, play and move to a range of music, demonstrating
a basic understanding of musical concepts.
PDHPE: In PD/H students will be studying the unit ‘Healthy Living’. During these lessons they will learn about the importance of
nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. In PE/fitness students will be engaging in the Be Skilled Be Fit program, learning athletics skills.
The Be Skilled Be Fit lessons will take place on Tuesdays.
