CHECK TOOLS, MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT FOR

INSUFFICIENT QUANTITY OR FAULTS/DEFECTS AND REPORT TO
THE AUTHORITY BASED ON MANUFACTURER’S LISTS AND PRE-
OPERATING PROCEDURES .
Background Information for Learners
Imagine that the long, hot summer vacation has finally come to an end. It’s the
beginning of the school year and you are ready to start working your vegetable
gardens. But before that check first the tools, implements and equipment you are
going to use.
Armed with your working clothe and personal protective equipment (PPE), please
proceed to the shop to retrieve your tools so that you can start clearing away the last
remnants of summer and begin breaking the soil for a new year. Imagine your
frustration as you start pulling out all of your tools to see that they are covered with
rust and dirt that has hardened like concrete, and crusty globs of oil that have
collected dust last vacation. It seems that you are going to spend more time cleaning
and repairing tools on this nice day than you will actually use them.
To facilitate any work in the field, farm tools, implements, and equipment should
be prepared ahead of time before field work starts. In doing such, you can avoid
untoward incidents that may happen due to negligence.
Always remember to use the right tool for the right task. Serviceability of tools
depends on how they are being used, maintained and stored.

1. What should you do to your tools after use and why? (5 pts.)

2. Why is there a need to construct preventive structures in your work place? (5pts)

3. What preparations should you do before you store the farm facilities? (5pts)

Activity 3: True or False

Directions: Read and analyze each statement below. Write True if the statement is correct;
False if the statement is incorrect on the space provided.

_____1.The best way to use the stone is to find a way to stabilize the tool that you want to
work on.
_____2.Tools that are worn out should be separated and be fixed immediately to avoid
accident.
_____3. When sharpening, try to maintain the original factory bevel or angle.
_____4. Always push the file across the blade in a motion away from your body.
_____5. Clean accumulated rust and dirt off all metal surfaces with a wire brush.
_____6. Move the file diagonally, so that its cutting teeth are biting into the metal on the tool.
_____7. Use medium-grit sandpaper to remove rust on larger tools such as shovels, spades,
and hoes.

Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times 14

_____8. When sharpening with a file, do not use oil; metal filings will accumulate and clog
the file's serrations.
_____9.Oil will help tools to work as intended and will prevent the formation of rust.
____10.For pruners, use a whetstone because it produces a very sharp cutting edge.

Activity 4: Sharpening Actual Performance

Directions: The learners will perform sharpening some tools. Among the tools given below,
choose one that is available in your house.

Hoes, forks, shears, and spades become blunt and need to be sharpened. Use a file or
sharpening steel. Sharpen the upper surface. Then rub over with an oily rag.

Criteria for Evaluation: While performing the activity it is important for you to assess your
performance following the following criteria:

SCORING RUBRICS
CRITERIA POINTS
The blade is properly sharpened 5
The nut is properly removed and returned 4
The step by-step procedures are correctly followed. 3

The safety precautions are properly observed. 2

Materials, Tools and Equipment:

o Oil -
o Rag - 1 pc
o Sand Paper 300 - 1 pc
Tools:
o Hedge shear - 1 set
o Metal clamp - 1 set
o File - 1 pc
o Wrench

Procedure:

Step 1: Tighten the pivot nut. Before sharpening, check the pivot nut. It could be loose,
making the blades drift apart while cutting and tearing the twig instead of cutting it clean.
The nut should be snug with no play in the pivot. With the nut tightened, check the tool; if it
cuts cleanly, it doesn't need sharpening. If it still cuts poorly, look down each blade to make
sure it's not bent. If a blade is slightly bent, loosen the pivot nut and separate the blades. To
straighten the blade, put it in a vise, slip on some thick leather gloves and tweak it until it's
straight.

Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times 15

Step 2: File the edge to expose clean metal Clamp the blade firmly in a vise. Examine the
factory edge. Hold the file with both hands and mimic the direction of the bevel like a golfer
taking a practice putt. Now move the file in one broad stroke away from you along the entire
cutting angle. To reiterate, move the file in one direction, away from you. Don't use small,
jerky strokes or you'll lose the factory edge. As you work, you can see the clean metal path
left by the file. Adjust your angle as needed to file the entire edge evenly. Repeat this motion
several times until you expose clean metal over the whole edge. Usually it'll take only about
10 strokes. Do the same with the other blade.

Step 3: Sand the back side of the blade Place a sheet of 300-grit wet/dry sandpaper on a
smooth, flat piece of plywood. You'll be able to feel the burrs (be careful— they're sharp) on
the back side of each blade caused by the filing action. To remove them, lightly sand the back
side of the blade. Keep the blade flat and move it in a circular motion. After making several
circles, pick up the blade and gently feel the edge. When the burrs left by the file disappear,
assemble the blades and lightly oil the moving parts with 3-In-One oil.

Step 4: Perform house keeping

Closure

Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times 16

Tools that are worn out should be separated and be fixed immediately to avoid accident .Farm
implements like ordinary plow and wooden harrow should be checked thoroughly before use.
Loosened bolts and nuts should be tightened firmly. Disc plow and harrow should also be
lubricated on their moving parts like bearings. Tractors should be tuned-up very well by
skilled operator. Check on their oil, lubricant, fuel and cooling system.

Background Information for Learners

Most irrigation systems in the Philippines and in other developing countries of Asia have
been designed for rice irrigation. The majority of such systems are run-of-the- river type, with
fairly adequate water supply to irrigate their design areas during the wet season. However,
during the dry season, they experience water scarcity so that only part of the design area
could be served. This situation somehow encouraged the adoption of diversified crops in
some of these systems. While the need to produce more rice to support the demand of the
increasing population is recognized, the production of non-rice crops during the dry season
provides opportunities for increasing the productivity of irrigation systems. It could provide a
means to optimally utilize the available land and scarce water.
Irrigation focuses on two distinct groups of farmers looking for more profitable rice
production through center and pivots and linear (a) Traditional rice growers who want to
conserve water and decrease flood costs and (b) First-time rice growers looking for a
profitable rotational crop that can be grown on a non-traditional rice field.

Efficient water supply is one of the most important factors in successful and
sustainable rice production. The total irrigation water requirement for the whole cropping
season varies depending on soil type, topography, proximity to drainage, depth of water table,
cultural management etc.
The three schemes of development of irrigation systems are run-of-the river diversion,
storage or reservoir, and pump irrigation. Diversion projects entail the drawing of water
under controlled conditions directly from the flow of rivers or streams. Storage or reservoir
projects involve the construction of storage dams to impound water and released as needed to
be drawn from a diversion dam downstream. Reservoir projects are usually multi-purpose to
include other functions like power generation, flood control, fishery and recreation. In pump
projects, water is lifted from underground or from rivers and streams. Pump systems are also
common in some storage or diversion schemes to lift water to irrigate areas on higher
elevation or pump groundwater to supplement available supply from the river. Environmental
protection and conservation is a key consideration in the design of various schemes.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

FOLLOW MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT HANDLING PROCEDURE

Background information for the Learners
Due to climate change, the supply of water is becoming scarce nowadays. The extreme
changes of weather conditions in the different regions of the country caused a dramatic
impact in rice production. Places with extreme rain fall experience flooding while those with
scarce rainfall face long drought. Both situations cause soil degradation, resulting in loss of
agricultural production.
Dams that hold water for irrigation purposes become destructive during rainy season due
to excessive supply of water, yet becomes inutile to supply water during summer when it is
needed most in the rice fields. Farmers turn to use of waterpumps to source out water from
deep wells but the water level below is getting deeper each year making it very expensive for
farmers to sustain a profitable rice production.
Water is life. It is one of the most important factors in increasing production of our staple
food. It determines the availability of nutrients in the soil and control weeds. Hence, efficient
utilization and conservation of irrigation water are necessary.
Water insufficiency in any stage most especially during the vegetative and reproductive
growth stages is evident. It reduces plant height, tiller number, and yield. Water is most
critical from panicle initiation to grain development. Lack of water during these stages leads
to production of unfilled grains.

PROVIDE IRRIGATION SUPPORT ACCORDING TO OHS
REQUIREMENTS AND ACCORDING TO WORKPLACE
INFORMATION

Background information for the Learners

Irrigation canals are infrastructure that distributes water originating from a water source to
agricultural properties owned by farmers. With the existence of this irrigation canal, the need
of water for the farmers' fields will be guaranteed. And with the increasing construction of
irrigation canals that constantly being pushed forward, it is high likely that an irrigation canal
project must be constructed with a difficult design in a difficult place as well. In addition,
natural factors and the needed tools can also be a risk factor for workplace accidents in
irrigation canals projects.
The occurrence of work accidents can also be seen from management factors, including the
absence of work safety policies at the farm level and at the project level. The weak
management of occupational safety will be the main cause of workplace accidents in
irrigation canals projects.
Therefore, an action is needed to lessen the risk of workplace accidents, namely the need
for the administrator to develop work safety regulations and procedures and to be strictly
enforced. Safety plan is a very important element of project management, because it covers
all health and safety conditions in the workplace. Safety plan must be implemented in the
planning process of the project as early as possible and then carried out during the
construction stage of the irrigation canal.
And with the implementation of a developed and based safety plan, it is expected that
effectiveness can be achieved, therefore OHS performance of the worker on the project can
be improved.

OBSERVE HANDLING AND DISPOSAL PRACTICES OF MATERIALS

FOR IRRIGATION WORK, FOLLOWING ENGINEERING AND
ENTERPRISE POLICY AND PROCEDURES
Background information for the Learners
Irrigation systems should be a relevant agent to give solutions to the increasing demand of
food, and to the development, sustainability and productivity of the agricultural sector. The
design, management, and operation of irrigation systems are crucial factors to achieve an
efficient use of the water resources and the success in the production of crops and orchards.
It is found that with increase in the global population and the rising demand for food
and other essentials, there has been a rise in the amount of waste being generated daily by
each household. Waste that is not properly managed, especially excreta and other liquid and
solid waste from household and the community are a serious health.
The efficient handling and disposal of materials are vital to industry. In addition to
raw materials, these operations provide a continuous flow of parts and assemblies through the
workplace and ensure that materials are available when needed. Unfortunately, the improper
handling and disposing of materials often result in costly injuries. Improper handling and
disposal of irrigation wastes can allow toxic compounds, and other pollutants to enter
stormwater runoff. The discharge of pollutants to stormwater from waste handling and
disposal can be prevented and reduced by tracking waste generation, storage, and disposal;
reducing waste generation and disposal through source reduction, re-use, and recycling; and
preventing run on and runoff.

Closure
Irrigation waste must be managed with caution prior to proper disposal following the
company standard procedure. These wastes when managed properly through the application
of the knowledge of agricultural waste management systems such as the “3Rs” can be
transformed into beneficial materials for human and agricultural usage. Farmers should work
to minimize the generation of waste the greatest extent practical and ensure that generated
waste cannot generate additional waste by keeping dumpsters closed and covered. Pollution
prevention and good housekeeping practices are required.
